He provided possibly the best experience I ever had at a game of football, that 5-1 defeat of Germany in Munich!

RIP Sven

My dad, myself went to Sven’s first England match against Spain at Villa Park - we went with Andy Liney
, Pete Smith and a few other Rovers regulars. I didn’t make it to Germany for the 5-1 but was there at Old Trafford when Beckham played against Greece almost single handedly & we all know how that finished.

For all of his supposed tactical know how, he insisted on sticking to a 4-4-2 formation which meant that one of Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard missing out or being shoehorned into playing on the left which suited none of them.

This is a bit of a myth, Paul Scholes regularly played on the left for Man U at the time, he wasn’t shoehorned in. I think people remember different eras of Scholes career where he did play further forward and more centrally. But at the time it wasn’t really out of position for him.

RIP Sven, always enjoyed watching England under him.

RIP Sven, that 5-1 will live long in the memory, and will/has gone down in England folklore.

Got a hard time in the tabloids, some perhaps he brought on himself.

Crossed paths with Rovers a few times with man city, notts county and Leicester.

A legend of the game .

I recall when he Brought Leicester to Doncaster they stayed at the Earl and on the morning of the Match they had a training session on Elmfield Park, they put a lot of time and effort into engaging and interacting with the local kids playing footie on the Park! RIP Sven.
