I'm amazed it doesn't happen more often in top level football. Some of the impacts at speed are brutal.
-
Brings to mind the French outfield player that was nearly murdered by the German goalkeeper all those years ago, I forget there names, was it in the World Cup?
-
Was it Schumacher the German goalie who took out Battiston, the Frenchman nearly died.
Schumacher wasn't even booked i believe?
-
It was. And he wasn't. And it was deliberate. It was GBH

PS And the bas**rds then won the game too.

I remember the GBH Nat Lofthouse commited on Harry Gregg in the 1958 FA Cup final. He smashed both Harry and the ball into the goal.
Harry was out cold for what seemed an eternity. I thought he'd killed him; and yes, the goal was given.
That, and the Maradona handball, were the worst 2 refereeing decisions I've seen in my life.

I drove my Dad and F in Law to what was Hatfield Squash Club
When that horrendous "block" took place I jumped up and shouted :b***** at what I remember was a big screen
They were both "surprised"
It came back to.me at Middlesbrough when Sulli and Emnes had a similar "coming together"
-
Yes, Sulli did a proper job on Emnes, that was also GBH, it looked like a career ending tackle. I was the ground too.

The sound of the Raul Jimenez and David Luiz clash of heads a few years ago was sickening. I’m surprised Jimenez ever wanted to compete for a header again.

There was a stocky guy called Bailey played for Wolves in the 70's. I think he was a midfielder. He went into a tackle and his leg snapped. The crack it made as it broke was loud enough to he picked up by the tv microphones - which is how I heard it. Every player on the pitch just stopped dead. Everybody knew.
I don't know what became of the guy afterwards. Better, I hope, than the awful mess that was made of David Busst's leg that dreadful afternoon in 1996 at Old Trafford. 10 operations in 12 days. 14 operations in 6 months. 22 operations altogether. He can walk. But that's it. Peter Schmeichel was sick on the pitch it was so bad....

I sometimes went to Leeds in the early 70s when Rovers weren't playing with my friend and his Dad who were from Leeds. I remember an evening game when Joe Jordan broke a Stoke City? players leg. The crack was heard all around the ground which instantly fell silent, I know unusual for them but it happened.
The other leg break was when I played for Good Companions one of ours had his leg broken in a 50 50 challenge no loud ctack but the break was obvious, horrendous, no first aider he layed where he was until an ambulance eventually arrived and off he went. The game then continued.

The worse one i can remember was Gordon Cowans playing for Aston Villa, went in for a tackle and snapped both his tib and fib, the thing that made it horrendous was that he didn't even fall over, he was just stood their with his leg dangling at a 45° angle, made me think about playing on the following Sunday.

I remember Busst's leg breaking, Bob.
Apparently it never healed properly because as the leg snapped the broken ends of the bones dug into the turf and became contaminated.
