Nice to see Tommytoes and his good lady today
He ribbed me re my mesmeric Posts ( I don't think it was a complement - but he and I go way back so I knew he didn't mean it )
I said it's because its hard to talk about Wordle and / or Connections without talking in code for fear of spoiling them for others and if you sit on something it's hard to look back or perhaps nobody is bothered
So I said we ought to have a Thread where players could swap news , views but no Clues on the day of the playing
He said good idea , give it a go . So we will , it might bomb it might not and who knows it may be useful so here we go
Stick stuff on here before during or after playing either game BUT remember only look when you want to and remember don't look if you don't want to spoil your Game
-
Not sure I’m keen on that but usually do them both early
-
It may bomb , but we'll see how it pans out
May be an early bath for this idea
-
Well done Wolfie!
I even understood all that!
I’ll certainly post my thoughts and have a rant when I’ve cocked up and blame those pesky Americans.
Remember lads and lasses dont open this topic until you’ve completed (or failed) or are stuck and have had enough, of the Wordle or Connections.
-
Couldn't better I have put myself it

When wordle was first posted up there was a little bit of chatter and I decided not to do it here for that reason, then I found that the wordle word in oz was different anyway so that put paid to it. We did it in the privacy of our own home for quite some time before it petered out, for us anyway.

Wordle today
PASTE
TRAIL
GRANT in less than a minute.
Connections
I thought bye cheerio later etc were what they seemed so lost two lives buggering about with that.
Then got the Y.
Then thought about breakfast cereals and didn’t include Pebbles. Why would you for f***s sake?
Then thought about a tennis tournament, bye, round. But not Bracket so bang that was it.
That’s two or three fails in a row!
-
I often struggle with connections as it’s full of “Americanisms”.. other days it falls straight out.
For wordle I always start with TRADE ie use most common letters and 2 vowels, then my second guess adds as many new letters and vowels as I can. If none of TRADE is there, my second guess is LIONS.
Only fails if there’s a -XX-X word where there are too many choices for the - - letters, even after I’ve got the XX X second guess.
-
Seems a good plan IDM.
I just put any random word that comes into my thick head, usually has an A E or O in it, sometimes all 3.
And go from there, sonetimes I get lucky, like today. sometimes not, but usually solve it.
Dont keep score nowadays, but cant renember my last fail.
Unlike connections where there seem to be more fails than wins lately.
-
Couldn't better I have put myself it
Very good Wolfie lol!
-
Kicking myself as yesterday higher DOD than today but failed
Yesterday I'm guessing some had one of each colour as Quarter Penny Dime and Nickel all fell in.different Groups ?
-
I spied the Round Tie Seed but looking for a 4th didn't involve bracket at any time
-
Suggested people would get P pretty quick
I was dumb , because after seeing Prime and Kindle I saw answer "Rainforest" and River and thought I haven't heard of either of them as I was STILL thinking Amazon and software    not River effin Amazon
Plank , no wonder I CANT get past 8 in a row
-
I had all sorts going round my head
Kindle prime plastic charge…set an explosion
Flop turn river card….poker
Then there were at least 5 that could have been cards…plastic credit charge river turn
Wooden…rainforest card amazon
Had me all confused, but worked it out in the end.
-
The strands game today is a pisser if you don’t know world foods and “dumplings”.. since when is a samosa a dumpling.????
-
Today's Wordle will have a few grumbling for sure.
-
I had 6 choices incl the one it was with 2 guesses left
I guessed wrongly on 5 but then that certain word made it the favorite (sic) and luckily home in 6
-
Was lucky that I had a mug 4 on the wordle otherwise I’d have struggled.
-
Connections not too bad. As soon as I saw Madden it fitted in with provoke etc but I fancied it as a Computer game as he is a famous NFL commentator who had a Game named after him
He " famously" goes game to game by Train as he hates flying
I had 2 more but had to find the 4th by eliminiation
-
Today's Wordle will have a few grumbling for sure.
Yep. Stupid bloody American spellings.
-
Wordle today
I actually took ages to get this right
After 0 4 0 4 I finally came up with a word where the letters all fitted
DICED and as the first D went Green I celebrated and went to report on usual Thread
While writing up the "win" I looked back to see if I had any Mugs but found DICED only produced
4 0
Only 1 letter fitted , and I won but had I not looked back my 150+ would have gone
PLANK ( not tomorrow's word but my nickname for myself )
-
Had a total of 11 greys after 3 guesses.
So with what was left thought ICE were probably the middle letters, so bingo.
As for connections, got my lovely homophones straight away and the rest were so simple.
-
Trying to work out what your mug 3-2 was Wolfie.
Edit
Ah. I think I’ve worked it out.
-
From a King to a clown in 2 puzzles today.
Wordle in 3 after a 2nd guess that gave me one vowel in the wrong place and then got it next go.
At this point I'm thinking about setting up my own Quizzing Agency that I could eventually franchise out, become a millionaire, and live off the annual franchise renewal fees.
Then onto Connections where I was on a run of 5 successes, but today failed spectacularly with not a single correct guess.
There are chuffing amoebas that did better than me on Connections today.
So with my dreams of riches dashed, I'm off for a 6 mile walk to try and get the bitter taste of failure out of my mouth.
-

Edit
Ah. I think I’ve worked it out.
As we are on here I went for Snoop in Row 3
Double Mug . I like them as even a Plank can't (shouldn't) get the next guess wrong
Spoon , gotcha

*** THAT would be me , though I did lose 2 lives
-
Who are you calling an ameba er ombama, i mean umbongo, noooo ambera.
Oh sod it!
-
Connections ....I hope this compiler has a long career
-
Git the wordle in 5, nowt to shout about is it?
-
Anyone looked up Marco Polo , the game
Have a laugh and do so
-
Thought I was being clever when I followed a 'film credits' connection today. Ended up being a 'plank' ie one from each group.
-
Exactly that. Best Boy Gaffer Dolly etc got me one of each colour
Incidentally , just thought. Can you look at that point to see what you have got ?
If you could look and see you have 3 Yellow and a Green it would help
-
Seemingly jammy 3 on a dodgy word today but sometimes you are just "led" to the answer (as today)
STARE got me a Green S and Amber T
SHOUT called to me to use OU and move T
that got me Green S Amber H and T (SHOUT was a past word)
Left just I as vowel so where could it go with T and H already wrong in P2. Yes in 2
So SI then I thought hasta be TH at end surely and then X jumped out and was right
-
It's an hour since I did it and even after your post above Wolfie, I have no idea what today's word was lol
-
Ah, now I remember lol.
On Connections I fluked the Greens. I was looking for 4 that linked to 'water'.
Got 1a 3 times and fluked the 4th.
-
Purple today
Yardstick has 3 feet ffs
Poem has feet and they are defined as a silent first syllable and a stressed second syllable
A- muse I get but La-mbs also ffs
-
It’s bo-locks Wolfie.
-
P . I would never have spotted the Connection today the 7th and have only just solved the 5 letter one even though anagrams are my thing.
I've lost my touch on Countdown recently but could often see the Conundrum as quick as the competitors on the day
Not as good at the ordinary rounds , so I was surprised to be stumped by the M one t oday even though he was very very famous
-
SPOILER ALERT - DON'T READ ON IF YOU'VE NOT DONE TODAY'S PUZZLE.
Nice to see my formative years drooling over the Ladies Underwear section of my Mum's Freemans catalogue finally paid dividends today!
She was right though, as I now need glasses to do the puzzles!
-
I got the blue first as well.
I’d have been very disappointed with myself if I hadn’t!
-
Not a word I have every heard or used but was the only one that made anything that looked like a word
There were just q k j z x etc left and I permed them all and anything LIKE a word was met with the shaking letters thing saying " not a valid word"
The word sounded and looked like 2 others but unsatisfactory imo
-
I’ve heard of the word Wolfie.
I was lucky today as got the first two letters first, then the first three.
One wrong guess then bingo.
-
Well done , took me ages to creep to first 3 letters and thought "at last" when I entered Privy into Row 5 (wrong)
-
Privy was my wrong guess too, surprised it was wrong.
-
Purple getting solved easier today (Friday) on average , with people getting it 2nd or 3rd
After losing a life then getting Y , I was in a fix. Stuck !
I went away and came back and kept working on SANDS , ex Vegas Casino and a few other things B4 thinking Sands of time
Wow and there were 3 others that I thought I could add time to and boom Purple was done though I still didn't think ..... of it as " of Time"
-
Obscure knowledge is a good thing but it means a brain full of s**t
Looking at words I was stuck but like Sands yesterday I thought Sooner
Yes The Sooner State as Oklahoma is known. Owt else yes Michigan the Wolverine State
Volunteer ( yeees ) the Volunteer State. Tennessee
Nothing remotely like a 4th. True Gator was there but Florida is Sunshine State ( but was a hell of a clue )
I kept out of it and when there were 8 words left the 4 I fancied were still there. I still went for the other 4 which left my original 4 .
I selected them and realized they were the nicknames of the State Unis Am Footy Teams so Gators was Florida
* Sooners are Oklahomans and got that name when they were given free land to help colonise the mid West , all they had to do was get there and claim whatever they could
Hence it became the Sooner State because the sooner you got there , the better bit and bigger bit you could grab !
-
PS I've been in 24 States but none of those except of course Florida
-
I saw 'Volunteer' and immediately thought 'Is it Doncaster Working Mens Clubs' lol. Was looking for Hawthorn, Comrades and Balby Bridge to complete the set.
-
I like it ....
My only claim to fame was I played Darts v Balby Bridge once for Harlequin Thorne
We were trounced 8-1 and I was the one though their Player a Mr Gill had 3 sets to finish me off before I hit Double 1
Their Team was so good that anyone losing went to bottom of their list and then had to wait till others lost in future games
I still feel guilty 50 years or so.on but on flip side a bloke came and sat with me patting me on back
Well done he said , not many win here , and you should get a Pint off the Steward for that. I said I don't know him and he said you do .... its me ... and sent me to Bar lol
-
PS I've been in 24 States but none of those except of course Florida
I’ve been in some right states too but not of them in America.
-

-
Still can't figure the Foot in Purple ?
I get the other 3 ok
-
3' = 3 foot
3" = 3 inches
I fluked it thinking the connection was something to do with parts of speech or possibly the names of parts of a sheet of paper. Useless lol
-
Cheers Mug . Makes sense at last .
Contraction is apparently... he's here . I'm on 18 etc. I wouldn't have really known that one
-
.... and worse today as I found my Archive of Connections had been wiped out
It was swellgarfo or similar (Wells Fargo)
-
Re Connections in general, the person who used to regularly include homophones in the puzzle, must have lost his job as we haven't had those for a while.
-
Yes his employers must be homophonephobes.
I miss them.
-
Eye no ewe dough
-
Yew no watt eye knead.
-
Eloise
Is it a Plane , is it a Film , is it a Book , is it a Barry Ryan record. I've no idea at all
-
I've IMDB'd Eloise and there is a 2003 film starring Julie Andrews called 'Eloise at the Plaza' so I guess it must be that.
Hardly a well-known film, a bit niche that.
-
Blue today
I guessed at Plant to make a 4 with Pet House Baby thinking no bloody chance
Then realized I'm trying to get someone to look after my 4 Bird of Paradise plants so I can "go away" for a week or so lol
-
I did the same!
-
Low DOD counted for nothing
Left with 8 words and 4 lives but I could see (after a think) 3 that connected but nothing that really fitted
I tried them in likelihood and hope of them being right and on last life Scarf was the word !
Who knew ? Not me . Pure luck
P ... Yes I could see I should have connected 2 but I was looking for 4 and 2 of them must be US "things"
-
I wonder if scoff=scarf over there.
-
Maybe with Dick van Dyke saying it lol
-
P ... Today 29th
First word of HBO shows ?
I could guess at 1 by word association but even that might be wrong !
Knot hay fore bye too ( for TT )
-
Wordle 30th lol
A as a Yellow
Went Amock but it disallowed it
Went AMONG thinking good maybe a 2
Couldn't see another word at that point
So I stuck in MANGO using N again but thinking at least I might get a Green or 2 ( I didn't)
Could only put A last or 4th though now and it looked like M was favourite for 4th
Even then it took me ages to put DO as first 2.
Dogma ... I didn't look if it had gone ! Thankfully not .
That was a challenge
-
Lost on Connections
Tried P as Baseball Pitches . Fast ball Curve ball etc but only found 3
I ignored Screw ball as I was thinking Glass and it cost me
-
Well I googled the 2 Purples I'd never heard of and I'm not much better off. Diva especially.
-
Yes , what a subject for a Connection !
50% to 70% might be Men and probably the non US ladies will have not heard of this
-
My reasoning for the B today was subjects/sections in the Business pages.
God knows what their Connection means.
-
Googled 'Connections Hint' and the clue was 'Subcultures by profession'. I'm no better off.
-
Neither am I ffs.
-
Blue Category: From digital currencies to pharmaceuticals, each bro has their own hustle.
Yeah ok lol
-
And another I found ... Still no help
KINDS OF BROS
CRYPTO FINANCE PHARMA TECH
This one is a little harder if you are not sure what you are looking for, but PHARMA and CRYPTO were what tipped me off to what the category might be. I didn’t specifically have “bros” in mind, but I was in the right general direction to know what was going on. It wasn’t hard to add FINANCE back in, but getting TECH in there was a little harder. However, none of the final four words were close enough to confuse me to the point of guessing wrong, it just took a little extra time.
-
A tip amongst a few I got yesterday looking for above was, look for the outlier which doesn't seem connected to the others
O was one today once i braved the ring band etc
I never gave O Oscar a seconds thought but I.may have thought Statuette Oscar
That would have been easier perming if 2 were right . But I went after B and tripped by Murphy Bed. Americana again probably
-
I was hot on the trail of Oscars and despite knowing 3 of the bed Connection, kept guessing Oscars of which I was only certain of 2.
The actions of a twit.
-
Knew 3 of the beds, which were obvious.
Tried 0 and then Statuette (God knows why!)
Of the others Murphy seemed the only likely one, so Bingo.
The Oscars thing never crossed my mind.
-
Wordle today put BRAND in on Row two.
So the solution was either BRAIN or BRAWN.
Looked at my rippling biceps and six pack (I wish)
and went for the winner.
-
Yellow Homophones
I avoided it for ages as I was sure Ewe U Yew were together but surely You couldn't be the 4th could it
Unless they all mean You. Have I missed summat ?
-
I'd have got it today if I'd put my glasses on. What I thought was a B was a chuffing 8 lol.
What a dork!
-
I thought the green was about boats!
-
I'd have got it today if I'd put my glasses on. What I thought was a B was a chuffing 8 lol.
What a dork!
Yes a pity because it was imo the "outlier" for today as the Tip I got referred to in #76 above.
I was left with them (P) but getting Super 8 a film , a Motel or a kind of movie making medium would have given me Bowl etc as well
-
I've noticed that in the past the Wordle has had a link to certain holidays that fall on that particular day.
On Halloween the word was 'Ghoul'. ( That may be an outright lie but I can't be arsed to check, but it was summat along those lines).
With that in mind, I went for 'Snowy' first today, instead of my usual start word.
That failed but gave me a 1(0). I bought into my theory further by guessing 'Share' as my second guess and it went all green.
Following my theory, I'm looking at 'Fresh' or 'Start' for 1st January. (If they haven't gone already of course).
-
Hi Mug , both have been used but on the theme Outgo is still "live"
-
Wordle in 1 with the outgoing STARE
Connections what a git. Got a G but had lost a life with Melt Wrap Club plus Grinder already.
I then tried 3 others with no conviction and found answer was Hero another name for a Sub in New York State
Ironic because NYS is the home of Subway and I had a brilliant one in Lake Placid ( home of Winter Olympics of 1980 ) 3 years after that in 83

Well done Wolfie, it's a great feeling isn't it?
I think they'll save ADIEU until the last ever puzzle as it's the most used start word apparently and would be very apt.
I scored a nice 2 today which was assisted by the fact that I occasionally call one of my cats 'a ☆☆☆☆☆-eyed freak' and she was pressed against me, licking her bumhole whilst I was Wordling.
-
What better clue could you want lol
Probably Adieu will be last . Very apt
-
Mug
One of our past cats was called *****
due to her colouring.
Mrs T was thrilled with today’s word.
She loved that cat.
Me, I prefer our current one.
First one we’ve had that might outlive me!!
-

First one we’ve had that might outlive me!!
We have 3 at the moment. 13 year old brother and sister.
No more cats for us as we don't want any of them outliving us and having to be rehomed.
Or so we thought.
18 months ago, some young folk moved in up the street. Within an hour of them moving in, their kitten moved in with us.
We tried taking him back many times but he just came back to us.
In the end his owners seemed to lose interest in him, and so he's ours now lol!
-
I'm stuck today but fancying Shakespeare is in there.
4 lives left to get one Row and other solves itself but I could attribute most of the 8 to WS in some oblique way
-
No clues , just to say I lost
-
Don’t know how I didn’t get the G today.
When the solution came up I could have sworn I’d put those in.
Still no matter as I’d never have got the B and G.
-
Can someone explain the P today??
-
A DEAL IS A DEAL (IS A DEAL)
A ROSE IS A ROSE (IS A ROSE)
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH (IS ENOUGH)
LOVE IS LOVE (IS LOVE)
I think!
I didn't get it, by the way!
-
That’s right BB.
How you supposed to get that?
Bloody ridiculous!
-
Are they songs?
-
Nah!
Just b*llocks is b*llocks is b*llocks.
-
I couldn't let it lie. I Googled 'Purple Group Tuesday Connections' and the first 2 hits I clicked in gave slightly different answers.
One instance quoted that Classic film that everyone in the Western world has seen 'Scott Pilgrim against the World'.
I'm letting it go now as I truly don't care anymore lol
-
It’s a great film that Dave.
It’s where Scott Pilgrim rides out on his trusty steed called Nag is Nag is Nag (nag nag nag for short)into outer space and then declares War on The World.
There’s a shoot out which our all American hero Scott wins with his gold plated six shooter, while the The World only has every nuclear weapon on Earth.
Very realistic it is.
-
Flicks Film Video Super 8 ....whatever they call em Im usually bamboozled
Id have a chance with Goal World Cup 66 or Coming to America and er thats about it
-
I got G straight off and then spotted a great P
Words in America the Beautiful . It was right and I moved on but then saw it said " last words in America the Beautiful"
And I thought , the last words of AtB I assumed were from sea to shining sea so I disagreed ( nit picking I know ) because from is not one of the 4 last words
Anyway I looked it up and didn't realize it was written by Ray Charles for a start and then saw the actual lyrics he wrote end with ....
..... Cause he, he, he, he crowned thy good
He told me he would, with brotherhood
(From sea to shining Sea)
Oh Lord, oh Lord, I thank you Lord
(Shining sea)
Maybe they use the popular version but I stand by my original thought anyway
So a shit clue today either way but Streak 1 lol
-
I’d never have got it Wolfie and your explanation doesn’t help ffs! (Lol)
-
Well, well we'll. I have googled today's whaaat, erm sorry, the purple group and am pleased I did.
Not least because I 'solved' the puzzle immediately lol.
As a Mug punter (hence my user name) I'm not a statistician but that leapt out at me.
Google it yourself and see what you think.
-
I googled it earlier , looked and thought ffs , life's too short to tangle with that
I may go back later if in a better mood
On the upside I brewed 40 pints between Wordle and Connections lol
-
I have heard of the purple on a work thing, but only when reminded after a Google this morning, no way I'd have selected the 4
-

On the upside I brewed 40 pints between Wordle and Connections lol
To my feeble brain, it just leapt out at me.
His initial selection was a 3/1 chance.
However, once one door was eliminated, the other remaining door (the one neither selected nor eliminated) became an even money shot.
I don't want to overthink it in case I change my mind lol
-
Who knew a w*nk was a bird
-
Fluky as a fluky thing today
Down to 8 with all lives left, I spotted wet and dry and thought Season. Permed 3 times lost 3 times
Got it 4th time and it was about Martinis not Seasons lol
Left P which was just as well . I could see one of them 2 at a push but never 4
-
Wordle start Word gave me just a Yellow A for day 5 in a row .... Deja Vu for sure
I made errors in Row 3 using a Letter in same spot
Made similar error in Row 4 using a letter in same place ( without realizing ) and was then well and truly stumped.
I did guess(ish) what 4th letter could be and once I found a letter to go 5th I "dropped" on the word but what a challenge it was today
-
I never knew how to pronounce 'Bae' and now I do. Not that I will ever use it lol
