Not our happy hunting ground and against a team that their position in the league is mainly down to their home record where they have won 4 drawn 2 and only lost one game scoring eleven and only conceded 4 goals in those games and have scored eleven so by no means an easy game.
Three wins in the week and a few quid in prize money would be what the doctor ordered after the Bromley game we could have won but didn't, but it is cup football Barrow are now an established league side and have done very well against us since returning to division 2 and have dished out a couple of drubbings to us along the way, and will fancy a win as much as we do.
Our recurring luck of drawing an away game out of the hat has struck again and means our fans once again travelling a fair distance round trip to watch the games hopefully they will have a happy day.
The game v Barnsley probably means the players who had the shirts at Bradford being first choice again and deservedly so in my opinion after what I thought was the best display of the season as a team, and although the Barnsley result was a good one, the standard of play was hardly as good as Saturday so difficult to change the set up unless tactical or through injury IMHO.
What do you think?
Barrow, after heading the division early on have dropped away in the last few weeks, drew at Bromley last weekend 1-1 and have only won 1 game of their last six league games losing 3 and drawing 1 which does not mean a lot in cup football and with it going straight to penalties with no replays could result in an open game to start with and if even scores nearing the end of the game becoming a little sterile as the teams head for penalties.
So a game that could mean a lot to both sides, could be a little classic and could mean a lot to both sides financially looks quite attractive, and interesting to see the ambition of the managers as to tactics in a winner takes all game, as much as Grant plays attacking football some of our best moves and moments have been on the counter attack.
Can we get that three on the spin win?
There can be big financial rewards, and can draw new supporters into the club, do we just go for it?
Barrow is not one of our happy hunting grounds can we get the win we need and break a little jinx?
Three wins in Eight days if we win, can we do it?
It being a cup game are you bothered?
Lots to discuss, can it be the start of a cup run? do you think we can handle a cup run and a successful league season?
Please have your say.

Barrow manager was red carded on Saturday so presume will be banned.
-
I am going on Saturday, first time there since a preseason friendly when we were in the championship and they were still in the conference, looking forward to it. They are a very decent side and I expect both teams to be up for it- we won’t dominate possession which should suit us. I expect it to be close but if Hurst’s great form continues I would hope that we will have too much for them. I would go with same team as Saturday.
-
Strange considering the results but I quite like a trip to Barrow.
Think they will be really up for this so we need to bring our A game - hopefully same team from Bradford (can’t fault any of them).
On a side note Billy is a booking away from a one match ban - be a shame if he misses the County game

With todays communication options it probably won’t make any difference to him.

Same here roversdude!
For some stupid reason I keep travelling to this fixture in the hope and belief that THIS will be the time we win. The consolation has been that it's a beautiful drive from where I live, there's a decent chippy not far from the ground, and a good sports bar on site.
I'll be there again on Saturday ........ will THIS be the time?
-
My only visit to Barrow was Boxing Day 1965. Freezing cold and just about everything shut. We were 2-0 down after about 3 minutes and Laurie Sheffield pulled 1 back after about 5 minutes gone. A crap game and no more goals and then some of their fans wanted to have a go as we got back on the Yorkshire Traction buses.
I have never felt like going back there but at least we went up as champions at the end of the season.
-
It were overseas will the match be available through Rovers+. I can’t see any mention on the rovers website

I am sure they are, and also I am not sure Billy has 4 in the league, I think he has 3 yellows in the league and one in the EFL trophy. Can anyone confirm?
Edit: I see Billy had a yellow against Chesterfield that I missed, so is on 4 league yellows
-
The five-yellow card rule only counts for league games. Sharp has four so far (Chesterfield, Swindon, Bromley and Bradford). If he is carded again up to and including the 19th league game then he'll incur a one-match ban.
After this point the threshold is increased to ten yellows up to game 38 - if a player reaches this figure they're banned for two games.
Hope that clears it up.

Things look like there starting to click now through the whole squad. I’m expecting us to start to show how good the squad really is. Donny win for me.
-
Not sure how significant it is but I note that we have had 65 shots in the last 3 games (one every 4 minutes or so).
This is well up on previous fixtures. On the down side we have only scored five goals in those three games.
The stat is crude and may be meaningless but it does feel to me that we are starting to click going forward.

The other interesting stat I noticed last night is having 57 touches in the box!! (Barnsley 20) This seems quite alot for the return of 23 shots and 3 goals. It makes it sound like it's 'To you, to me, to you...'
Clearly stats don't tell the whole story but as you said, it shows we're getting into good areas very frequently.
-
Our form the last few games has been good with players picking the ball up and running past players from midfield after squaring them up at Bradford and Barnsley.
Just the type of football non league sides stop with the tactical foul near the half way line and a low block and the ball between defenders, note Harrogate and Chesterfield goals against us.
I will be surprised if Barrow don't play that way.
We are a good side capable of winning the game, but our midfield will have to get a grip and it will be a difficult game.
-
I don't know what a low block is. Who invented it? When? What does it do?
Ta!!!

It's like trying to find a parking spot close to the doors of a supermarket!! Sometimes you have to go round again.
-
Low block is the modern term for teams playing deep in their own half, protecting their goal.
High block is teams playing further up the pitch, attacking more.
........ I think!
-
The low block and the tactical foul, think Inter Milan in the sixties. Helenio Herrera and the hated catanaccio it has been around years
Bob, you must have missed it the first time, there is not a lot you can do on a football pitch that hasn't been done before.
In fact the great Celtic side stopped them winning a third European cup on the bounce playing similar to how we play with wide men and overlapping full backs.

Thank you BB!!!
Why does perfectly usable terminology have to be reinvented? 'Defence in depth' etc worked fine for a 100 years....
It's like that stupid phrase 'in the building'. What a load of meaningless tripe. I know what the implied message is for this silly phrase, but the English language has way more than enough alternative ways of expressing the idea without confusing the insides of offices and dwellings with being employed.
Cheers!

And "transition"..
WTF.??

Reminds me of a spoof video I saw some years ago where someone (maybe Tim Lovejoy?) put an American on commentary of a 'soccer' match. Some of the expressions were priceless - I think 'apex restart' for a corner was my favourite

No Philsky since BBC broadcast the FA Cup whereas Rovers + is through Sky .

I heard a similar one, DU. Instead of "he headed it into the net", he said "he top-balled it into the score sack".

What about when a pen is awarded and the American commentators say “it’s a PK”.

Excerpt from some memoirs I have been scribbling:
Some years later, two incidents arose during a work trip I made in 1984 to the USA. On arrival at Dallas-Fort Worth airport I needed a rental car and was very keen to not to have an automatic. At the desk, I asked if they had a car with manual transmission - and was met with blank faces. 'You mean you want someone to give you a push?' Then finally 'Oh you want a car with a stick-shift. No we don't have any of those'.
The second incident took place in the offices of large contractor company LTV - in a huge hangar sized room with maybe 100 people working in cubicles created from temporary movable room dividers about 5 feet high. I was working with an attractive recently divorced lady of my age (early thirties). I was working on large matrices of data, working in pencil. I was working with highly classified data, and so to minimise the number of sheets to be destroyed I worked in pencil until all the numbers were correct. At a certain point I asked my host if she had a rubber. She went quiet, and then slowly heads appeared above the partitions from all sides. "I think you mean an eraser" she said.

This must be one of the most pleasant journeys through the northwest of the country .An enhanced match day experience ( if you avoid the M6 ) .

I'm assuming like most DRFC fans a sigh and FFS was the reaction to this draw. We just can't win there can we? But at least the weather looks decent. Would we take a replay? I think so. Big test this for us. We've had a good few away wins at tough places to go now, would be great to back it up. 3 away wins in a week would be a crazy strong week.
-
There are no longer any replays from the first round proper onwards.
-
Downgrading the FA Cup, and it's value to none PL clubs simply to further the corporate greed of the elite few. Football - a lustrous example of the destructive power of unfettered greed.

DFPs predicted starting line up.
Predicted Rovers XI: Sharman-Lowe, Sterry, Olowu, McGrath, Senior, Maxwell, Kelly, Bailey, Hurst, Gibson, Sharp.
Back 3 again. I don't think I'd argue with that and keeps Hurst in the No 10 role.
Not sure anyone would want a replay anyway given the fixtures we have coming up so hope we'll be good enough to win the tie in 90 mins.
Not sure if there's extra time or whether it goes straight to penalties?
Correction: I'd swap Gibson for Molyneux.

The DFP haven’t even put Moly on the bench!
Their sports writer certainly has his finger on the pulse.

They can't even blame the Supercomputer for that one!

A win would top off a great week, and we could continue our tour of football grounds wiyh yet another away draw in the next round no doubt.
-
I didn’t list a bench so haven’t missed Molyneux out. This side isn’t a one-man team and I don’t think it overly affects them, especially in the cup. All opinions

Who did they name on the bench.??

They can p!ss about with it as much as they want, but woke up with that 'It's FA Cup first round day!' feeling. Love it.

Agree Les there is still a sprinkling of magic (not a lot to quote a magician) but a little bit

I don’t think this is a bad one for Moly to have a rest for so I wouldn’t mind it. As Ricky has said above he didn’t name a bench so he’s always there if we need it.
-
I don't care whether it is the league, a cup, the trophy or even a friendly. Every game, no matter what it is, is a chance Rovers might win and that is exciting. Simple.
-
No midweek games all month so we should be putting our first choice team out. I wouldn’t make a change from Bradford.
Rest players for too long and they lose momentum.
-
For the first time in many years, we have a squad large enough to cope with competing in more than the league. Wood and Westbrooke should be back in the next few weeks. Then from January we have Faulkner and Jones back from Ireland. We will have a very large squad. Especially if some of the younger loan lads come back who have been doing very well, like Oram and Flint. Take this fairly seriously and we could make the third round yet.
-
Agree, there's every reason to keep the continuity going so we would hope McCann will approach it the same as a league game.
-
Same starting lineup as Bradford
-
Job done. Not the prettiest performance but we'd expect that at Barrow.
Great the Kelly got off the mark. Only downside are the injuries. Sterry could be a long one, but will be concern over Senior and Maxwell.
-
When Sterry got hurt the commentators were suggesting a dislocated shoulder might be the issue.

Was Senior injured? Given the change to our shape and the timing it could have just been tactical.
-
I thought it was tactical, he wasn’t making much impact
-
Into the second half the commentator said he would try to find out but nothing more was said (unless it was when I let the dogs out for a wee).

Senior a tactical substitution. Sterry dislocated his shoulder again but should be fine for next week. Maxwell injured the same foot again so they took him off. Unclear yet if it is owt or nowt.
