That brings back memories and not a foreign manager in sight.

In the days when there were quite a few player managers and they didn't need a coaching licence.

…when it was just a game and not a series of processes…

He was a pretty good centre half though.

Cusack took us to a higher league finish than Brenner ever did, despite losing the core of the Brenner side. I think he gets way too much stick. Pretty awful stuff to watch, but what did we expect?

memories from that long ago can be a bit misleading, I just remember being disappointed with the performances I saw under Cusack.  Perhaps I missed more games than I actually saw.  Hard act to follow I suppose.!

Was just about to post something similar. I can remember the 87-88 season as a teenager giving abuse to Cusack. Looking back now that was pretty embarrassing of me. The football was awful but as BST said, but his hands were tied. We didnt have any money at all. All the best players had been sold, and we were a club in serious decline. The popside had been reduced in capacity due to subsidence, and the whole ground was in decay. Attendances also since the miners strike had nosedived.

Was a very grim time to be a Rovers fan.

The football under Cusack was grim and of course we collapsed in 87/88. But when you look at the players he had available, what would you expect?

He did a pretty decent job before that. 11th in Div 3 in 85/86. 13th in 86/87. And he brought Tommy Gaynor, Neil Redfearn, Ronnie Robinson, John Cornforth and John Moncur to the club. And got the best out of Neil Woods.

It was grim & yet that's when I first took myself off to BV as a teenager, what on earth hooked me in? Wouldn't change a thing.
