I’ve always wondered why there was such a link between the local area and Wolves (particularly having worked with the late Roy Cork) this goes some way to explaining it, might be me but I found it fascinating.

Other information that might be interesting to some is that John and Ron Flowers were both from Edlington.

To underline my age (born 1943 )I played for Rovers Intermediates against Wolves in the Northern Intermediate league in the late 50’s .I attended a rugby only secondary school in Thorne and three of my fellow students were all signed by Wolves .Wolves obviously had not only a broad network of scouts in the area but must have held regular trials for youngsters interested in football .I did not play them away but was knocked out during a game at Belle Vue against them going head down for a fifty fifty ball ... so I have good reason to remember them .

Wolfie, someone I was at TGS with also went to Wolves as a teenager and was offered a chance to sign for them.
If I remember correctly he turned down the opportunity as he wanted to become a teacher.
Obviously back then the attraction of big money wouldn’t have been there and he was looking at a longer term job situation.
Edit: I have just seen your links and the cousin I know isn’t a JT, he is a BH and plays with one of the WF clubs that I am with.

John Flowers and some of his family had a table in the hospitality at the recent Notts County game. I think that it was his uncle that also played for the Rovers in the 1930s.

Cheers DW it really makes you wonder the talent we missed out on and how progressive Wolves were with the scouting/nursery.
When I first started at Yorkshire Main I worked with Roy Cork (can still hear his laugh in my head to this day) who had a lot to do with local football scouting and Wolves

There is another aspect to all this which is the one that Copps has always referred to and Grant does to.The importance of getting to know the behavioural make up of the player .
In the days this thread refers to there was little concern given by clubs to the mental health and strength or weakness of character in the selection of young players.Certainly my experiences of two seasons as a teenager at Donny were negative in terms of the coaching .
From what I hear and read of DRFC today they pay a lot of attention to the well being of young players from all angles .

It's one area Manchester United excelled at. You very rarely read bad news about the youngsters. If you did they were gone. It's alot to handle for a young lad of 17 18. They need lucking after and made aware of how to behave and what not. So many who looked world beater's fell away because they wasn't educated.
