Hi guys a few of us who go to 2/3 games in England a year coming down from Glasgow and we have chosen sunny Doncaster for our next footie trip in Feb/March 2025.
A few questions
1) Is the £59 Hospitality any good or just go for a normal seat ?
2) What is town like for guys in 40s ? Any particular areas or just a good mix?
-
You would be pleased with the level of service in hospitality but it goes with seats in the centre of East stand which is not populated with real fans usually just guests .South stand is where the fervent fans go .
As for the city :it has some of the best night clubs in the North .The pub with the closest Rovers’ association is the Salutation which incorporate a Thai Restaurant upstairs and is a friendly civilised place to eat and drink .I know the owner’s best mate so may be a bit biased .DRFdC fans are friendly and the club wins awards for it’s friendly welcome to away fans though I do not recommend you attend the away end but try to get tickets in the home sides.
Our city status is recent but the size of the centre is that of a Provincial town and all pubs and night clubs are within walking distance one from another ,Enjoy your trip !

15th February vs Grimsby would be a decent one to catch.
I would happy to meet up with your lot for pre match drinks and a walk from town to the ground.
-
I'd have to agree with Nudga - 15 Feb v Grimsby would be a good game to attend - with a half decent atmosphere. Just a word of warning though, South Yorkshire Police have a tendency to bring forward these games 12.30 KO. If you are around for the weekend then that's no problem - as it will give you more time in the pub in the afternoon..... loads of pubs in town for a bevvy.
-
Is the Grimsby game a sky + pick
-
The Grimsby match has been moved to 12.30 for sky coverage.
-
Already moved - there were a group of lads over from NI who were planning on coming back for the Grimsby game hope they realise it’s an early kick off
-
Not for everyone but any Real Ale fans would like this maybe ?

If I could only visit 4 they would be
Little Plough
Salutation
Hallcross
Doncaster Brewery

That’s brilliant John. Being an exile I rarely get into the town centre. We will be staying over for the Bradford City game though so a few ideas there for after our meal at Cactus Jacks.

That’s a decent selection. If you are down at Little Plough anyway then I’d add Tut to that list.

Booked for the Carlisle game a week on Saturday down on Friday - what about late night places for guys in 40s anything that we won't look out of place..Just booked a South stand normal ticket

Yorkshire Grey and Hallcross are lively early to middle of evening.
Social can be decent later on, especially if there's a decent band on, that's in Lazarus Court where there's other lively bars.
Masons, Rum Rooms and Queens can get busy.
If you want a laugh and fancy pulling something with a pulse, go to Biscuit Billy's, even ugly people can get lucky.

Start in Wool Market then Masons, Rum Rooms, Queens is a great shout. Did this the other week and ended up in Social later watching a band.
The new Irish Bar (the temple) near wool market has just opened and it looks amazing from what Iv seen on the free press website.

You're right about Biscuit Billy's, Nudga. Even I pulled once in there.
As we were leaving, one or two people came up and asked for autographs. Apparently, they thought it was f*cking Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker.

The Crisis Buster is good for a Friday night. £20 for unlimited drinks and Pizza. It's only on in certain pubs

Came down from Edinburgh to meet up with my son and daughter and their partners to celebrate my 72nd birthday.
Great day in hospitality, food and drinks were good, pre and post match entertainment good. Great seats.
Have done it a few times and always enjoyed it.
Only down side is the long walk back into town, but if you stay behind for the MOM stuff you can probably get a taxi to pick you up. Set up an account with the Drive app before you come down. They work like Uber in Donny.
Thoroughly recommend it.

Drive, too expensive and plenty of dodgy drivers

Assume everyone walks back then? Is there a few pubs on way back before centre to quench our thirst?
-
What other taxi firms are there in Donny?. Thought they had all been bought over by Drive

Donny Cabs, Absolute, Alfa Cabs, and if you are really lucky there may be an Uber or two knocking about
-
Never had an issue with Drive and prefer using the app.
Do the others have easy to use apps?

If you use Drive, chances are that the vehicle is licensed by Wolverhampton Council, if anything untoward happens Doncaster Council have no record of that vehicle, so no point in complaining to Doncaster Council

The shuttle buses from the stadium back into town might be running again by then.
Keep your eye out.

I go in the hospitality from time to time , I like the bar with proper glasses and also padded seat on halfway line , also sometimes takes ages to get served if you want a half-time pint in the concourses , as for pubs for people in 40s , Doncaster as a reputation of having a good nightlife and also day drinking . If I was getting the train in I would cross the busy road outside the railway station and there is the plough and tut and shive . Then would walk upto the black bull around the market , then maybe have one in the old wool market which as loads of street food stalls and live music , then onto the red lion just on the other side of the market , then work my way up hall gate , Yorkshire grey then hall cross and then salutation, then 15 min walk to ground . Could stop off at The Hyde park club midway so the walk isn’t as long , however this is an old working men’s club so don’t expect anything fancy with that one .

.... more like 10 minutes by ambulance to DRI for a stomach pump after that lot!

Well predicted Glasgow Robby!

Hope they had a good night, but let’s be honest the town centre is an absolute dump. The ‘nightlife’ is full of chavy 20 and 30 year olds wanting a tear up and there’s very little for the 40+ generation to have a nice drink.

Thats why most of the 40+ folk go out in the afternoon

I respectfully think you are completely wrong on numerous points here.

That’s fine, it’s allowed. But you can’t say it’s wrong without offering nothing back in challenge?

I'm definitely 40+, and there's plenty of places to have a nice drink

As has been said earlier in the thread, plenty of places for the grown ups to drink around the Wool Market area.
I also don’t agree town is full of chavvy 20 and 30 year olds wanting a tear up. Admittedly I don’t go out like I used to but hardly ever saw trouble, I don’t think the youth go out drinking as much these days either so town isn’t full of them.

Always provide feedback.
Game/Ground 1st
Good wee atmosphere was in probably your main stand where players come out. Was sitting next to a guy with his son had a good chat. Beer & chips at 1/2 time bit of a wait but fine. Game wise first 20 mins anybodys Carlisle missed a good chance that could have made a difference. Only one winner when Donny scored. Had £40 between us on 3-0 so happy days.
Nights out
Friday was fairly quiet - early doors 5.30 started in Lord Nelson played pool with 4 regulars ( were pish players but not too happy getting pumped every game ) then went onto Angel & Royal met a few members of the DONNY Rangers supporters club so had a good chat. Both ok pubs. Chicken & Chips and then back to hotel to get changed.
As said most pubs were quiet started in Biscuit Billys ( you send to go !! ) was very busy and decent beer. Went to Lazarus court ended up in amongst the youngsters - a tear up out of no where with 2 guys who had been sitting next to each other and talking for 30 mins - bouncers bolted 2 out. No issues we were not involved. Irish Bar ( we did visit ) was busy although r&b tunes not to our taste. Walked around visited 2 more. 12ish we tried Flares - asked bouncer if it was busy he told us not to go in as it was dead had a good chat with the guy said come back tomorrow.
Saturday walked up had a couple of beers in Yorkshire Grey watched footie. Decided to walk and asked a fan where best place to have a beer. Ended up taking us to a social club it was similar to our bowling club so great stop off.
After game the Rangers game was kicking off at 5.30 so walked back to Yorkshire Grey who had told us they would be showing game earlier on. As racing was on was heaving - game not on asked at bar and they said it was too busy to show 2 games ( fa cup game was on ) - remembered there was a sports bar next to Biscuits and went in. Asked bar guy if he would put game on and it was not an issue. Watched our riot of a game in there.
After RFC game walked up to The Lockwood - completely mental busy. Best bar of week. Probably because it was full of drunk randy 40s 50 year olds and was a Ska fest. Stayed in there until it started to die away about 10. Pizza home out at 11.
Started at Biscuits was busy, racing crowd had left the town so quiter - ended up in Social caught end act - was busy. Headed to Reflex wanted £6 to get in- bouncer from night before let us in free. Menatlly there rave act called N Trance playing live - so was a squad of people in. Did not stay that long. Back to Biscuits as only place that was busy - left at 2 and up road.
All in all great trip will return but we really fancy a Friday night game or 12.30 kick off
-
That sounds about right!

I went reluctantly the other Saturday for a friends head wetting. Been a while since I’ve been out ant night and as others have said, afternoons are marginally better. Apart from that new Irish bar and a couple of others in between i couldn’t believe how dead it was. The only other lasting memory was people chundering in streets and trying to work out where might be even remotely civilized for a bunch of blokes 40+.
Stand by the original comment though - it’s largely a dump with a bunch of run down pubs or overly chavy bars. Definitely not in a hurry to return

glasgowRobbie, we were in the Angel, I heard a Glaswegian twang when I was at the bar, I was going to mention your post on here but it would have meant that my wife wouldn’t be pleased if I abandoned her for a half hour if I got chatting.
As for the Donny rangers fan, he once confronted me because I replied that I was from the green side of Glasgow, he was due in court for being offensive and singing secatarian chants, so I now avoid him when he’s in the angel because I can’t be arsed with his abuse .
I’m glad that you enjoyed your stay in Doncaster.
I had a great weekend in Glasgow last December, I managed to get a ticket for the Hampden Celtic Vs Rangers league cup final and witness a 15 goal thriller.
