Looking at the name of the ref for that match, am I right in thinking he might be the father of the Mr Pickles who was chinned by Tony Coleman (who by coincidence moved on to Man City after being a Rovers player).

I was wondering that, but just looked see and the Mr Pickles of the Man City match was still referring in the 1960's - maybe it was the very same man?
These are the Liverpool matches he refereed. The last one vs Sheffield United was in the same season Coleman was sent off.

My grandad use to always mention this game to me as the best game he ever saw at Belle Vue. Notably because Burt Trautmann was the City keeper just 5 years after the war ended & he also used to mention the City forward who scored the hat trick by stating he had a wisened arm. I subsequently found out that player was a lad called George Smith.

My father was at that City game and also with me at the Rovers V Dover ( 5-4 ) game in the conference, he rated them about equal albeit with slightly differing crowd sizes !

This game crops up in lots of threads and I even quoted the same tag as Graing fairly recently which is an excellent balanced report. And yes, it will probably always be the greatest Rovers come-back game I ever saw.
