I always remember Gianluca Vialli saying when appointed as Chelsea manager that he wanted to be the first manager to win the Premier league with a fully foreign squad.

It's been coming for 20yrs.

It’s not even novel for Man Utd, they had a non-English XI in the Manchester Derby about 15 years ago.

Only 2 English managers in the PL
No English manager at the national team
Zero international trophies won for England

...the Prem does NOTHING for Enlgish football. Except maybe line the pockets of players, agents and pundits

I would disagree with that on one point.

At the EPL clubs these days the academy structure and the requirement to fund it to the extent they have been doing is providing the English team with a conveyor belt of English players. Yes there are a lot of foreign nationals in there as well, but just look at the current England team and the junior age groups for evidence. Southgate did well but there's a reason for that!

Three English managers, I think:

1. Eddie Howe, Newcastle.
2. Sean Dyche, Everton.
3. Kieran McKenna, Ipswich.

True in one sense, and it has provided success at u21 u17 etc level. You just would have hoped the "best" league in the world would contribute a lot more. In theory we should be flooded with top managers, coaches, players. The Germans, Italians, Spanish must laugh each time and English man says their league is a farmers league and the Prem is the best

McKenna classed as Northern Irish.

Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Mind you, with their own footy team you can argue the point either way.

I think the original point was about English rather than British managers. McKenna was raised catholic in Northern Ireland and played Gaelic football as a youngster so is likely to class himself as Irish rather than British
However he was actually born in London so make of that what you will.

Who care about the premier league it’s all
About money and it’s more average league than it has been for years , loads of bang average players who are about as consistent as our weather

About time Morcambe and Wise got overturned on the comedy stakes at Christmas. Nice on Wolves.

I think the manager issue is our own fault as a culture for two reasons.

We seem obsessed that managers have to have played and sometimes to a significant level. Lots of other countries seem to recognise this doesn't have to be the case and if someone can get a foot in the door as a coach in their 20's then there's no reason they can't become a manager in their 30's. It's relevant experience. Look at Rohl and Hurzeler, played a bit but decided they wanted to focus on coaching/management rather than pick it up when retired.

Also, and possibly linked to that, the cost of coaching courses and the opportunity for non-players in this country is absurd. We charge 3x/4x what other countries do for courses and then even those that can afford that struggle to get an opportunity ahead of players.

The players thing I can sort of understand even though it's sad. The PL is the richest league in the world so rightly or wrongly can scout the world for players from countries where the fee is cheaper than English players. Add in the pressure on managers to be successful in the short term and they will always look to sign players vs develop them
