Title: Preview of games played on December 20 & 21st involving the top 7 teams in L2
Post by: les@donr on December 20, 2024, 07:30:01 pm
Crewe V Colchester: Colchester have a better form record than Crewe, but Crewe have a very good home record over Colchester 1 in 17 win, rest L11, D5.
Best score for Rovers, Colchester win. Realistically a Draw.

Harrogate v Wallsall: This is a very hard game to predict as there strong arguments for both teams to do well in this game.. Wallsall have one of their 4 away games at Harrogate. However,, Wallsall are unbeaten in their last six away games. Best score for Rovers, Harrogate win. Realistically a draw.

Port Vale v Carlisle: Keeping it short. Can't see anything other than a Port Vale Win. Both in poor form, both low scoring sides, PV will edge it.

Chesterfield v Wimbledon: 6th v 4th. This could be a tight game, both have similar form. Wimbledon have a recent poor away record at Chesterfield D1,L2.
Best score for Rovers, a Draw. Realistically a Chesterfield Win.

Swindon v Grimsby: This game could throw up a surprise. Grimsby have a very poor away record at Swindon.W2, D6, L17. Swindon have won 5 out of 6 games against Grimsby. Best score for Rovers, a Swindon Win. Realistically a Draw.

Doncaster Rovers v Tranmere Rovers: Tranmere have a worse recent form than Doncaster W1, D1, L3 v W2, D1, L2. Tranmere do not have a good record against us, Won 7 out 8 last league games, Tranmere's away record against is W2, D12, L22. Best score for Rovers, a Rovers win. Realistically given our dire home form, a Draw.

What is your opinion about these games.

Agree with all the other games, we really need to win at home get this monkey off our back and boost some confidence into the lads ready for these run of Xmas and new year games.

With a win tomorrow and every game going our way we can move up to 2nd in the table

Agree, but can’t see it happening in this game. Teams have worked us out at the Eco. I think Tranmere will come with a plan to frustrate us, and nick a goal on the break. I think it will be another draw.

So, Crewe got a draw.
Walsall won.
Port Vale drew.
Chessie beat the Wombles.
Swindon beat Grimsby.
And of course we won.
Not a bad set of results all in all for us.

Not for the first time this season an awful lot has gone our way today. Walsall now 6 points clear with a game in hand, a win either way on Boxing Day would be a big marker for both teams.

I’d describe it as the 6th best in the division

That’s our record for the season, would you really call that form? Are we the 3rd most in form team in the division overall just because of where we sit in the table?

Form is admittedly a loose term but generally covers a shorter time span, usually the last 6 games or so. We’ve won 1 in our last 6 which puts us 15th in this form table, which feels about right. Wouldn’t call it dire but it’s not very good either.

They say that language evolves.  The inappropriate use of words like 'dire' on social media is going to result in them meaning something else.  'Dire' is going to mean 'of slight concern'.

We are going to need new words to describe things that really are 'dire'....and eventually new words to replace those new words when they in turn are used improperly.

Same will apply to words like shocking and awful regularly used on here .

 ;)

Not wishing to take this thread off topic but last year the OED changed the definition of 'literally' due to its established misuse.

We’ve only played 11 home games all season, we’ve only lost 2 out of those, it’s not dire

Our home league form is tracking very slightly behind last season. At present we are accruing home points at 1.72ppg while for last season this was 1.83 ppg. Very marginally weaker.

sf9944 and i_ateallthepies:
Fascinating… I suppose that those who use social media most are not an exact cross section of the population and there will be a considerable bias towards the young.

At school many years ago if you used a word inappropriately you would be pulled up immediately. Misusing words like “literally” can be fundamentally absurd and in the long run reduces precision. Often you would be corrected in a way that would make you remember for ever. I assume the modern attitude in education is to place self-expression above such considerations. Perhaps the same even applies at modern Universities.

I think we may already be at the stage of diversifying language to the extent that older people don’t fully understand the form of English used in social media and maybe this is reinforced by those who compile dictionaries being too willing to embrace change popularised in social media.
