A game in a competition that has probably lost it's lustre now being a competition just for the Top six same teams every year to contest, and if the Coventry referee in last years competition and the Chesterfield semi final years ago is anything to go by a waste of time lower sides trying to get to a final anyway even if their play deserves to.
But hey a day out for us supporters, not too far to travel, and a club we have had healthy competition with in the past and some great memories. Apparently we have sold over 2000 tickets which is a good following, but just how interested the Hull support will be in watching a game against little old Donny is questionable and will probably see us as just a stepping stone to a trip against a top side where they think they belong.
Realistically our form does nothing to dismiss those thoughts, they are a Championship side, not that good admittedly, but normally a class above us.
The one thing they should have is a lot more pace in their side being from the Championship most players just don't get at that level without pace of thought and running and is not exactly our forte in some areas of our team.
With a good wad of cash the prize for the winner I expect at least us to more or less stick with our line up of late despite their poor form, Whether Hull will see us as easy meat and rest some of their stars is questionable they themselves you would think would want to give their supporters something to look forward to Monday evening.
We will have our hands full if we don't improve midfield and defensively, play well and Hull a little off it and we can get something if we also have a little luck that has deserted us lately, especially some refereeing decisions, and if the norm of big side little team is evident in the game we will start at a disadvantage anyway.
What do you think? would you make changes? with transfers in and out that might happen in the week making it more difficult to guess the line up.
Definitely a lot to consider, lots to talk about, please have your say.
-
Given their current position it’s likely they won’t take any risks with any first team regular who maybe carry any small knocks or who their manager may feel needs a rest after the hectic last couple of weeks.
Seems like an ideal chance for Grant to take a gamble and try something different with the selection/tactics.
I would like us to go at them from the start with a high press and take the risk to attack, attack, attack! I can think of one player who would love it to be this scenario!
Yes if we loose we could miss out on a big payout if we were to draw a big club in the next round, but think we have more to loose if we do not win our next few league games.
So use this game to try a different approach, they have been a little better with the appointment of their new manager, but if we play how we know we can do in a big game, they are there for the taking.
-
IN. I would as well as I think a few are having problems with their game but I doubt Grant will. In some cases I think they are having trouble realising where to be and what to do in certain areas of the field, if they do they are not doing it.
Grant was getting het up more than once or twice yesterday and gesticulating to players what they should be doing and where to go.
-
Will we be given anymore tickets ? I’m after 4
-
We’ve sold about 2.5k now. Would have thought there is scope to give us another 1000 or so if the demand is there, given hull have only opened 2 stands for home sale so far, so segregation shouldn’t be an issue
-
2.5k, really?
-
In his post match interview yesterday he seemed to dismiss the Hull game, focussed on league matches.
I’d expect a few changes in our line up, then again there’s always changes in our line up.
-
2.5k, really?
Think it's more like 1000 sold
-
The way Hull have started to play and score under their new manager then we will have a very hard game. The league is our priority now as we are 7th in the league and could lose ground if the teams above us get results on Saturday only Salford in the Cup. Whoever Grant selects we will have to be better especially in midfield and probably in defence. Apart from extra money this game as no relevance in our plan to get promoted yes it’s a third round tie and that brings some excitement but need to win our next league game that is the important game.
There are supporters who have a different view to me as we have sold out our allocation well done to those who bought tickets.
Quote
❌ SOLD OUT
Our allocation of 2,340 tickets for Sunday's @EmiratesFACup tie @HullCity has now sold out.
We have been informed that we will not be receiving any further allocation of tickets.
-

Think it's more like 1000 sold
its sold out 2300
-
I’m after 4 tickets if anyone has some spare ?
-
Me 2
-
Don’t know where people got ‘I think we’ve only sold 1000’ from. We’d sold 2.2k by kickoff on Saturday!
-
Sold out now. 2.3k going.
Don't understand why they won't give us more?
It's 15% for fa cup games ?
-

they normally put up on website when we get extra tickets, not sure they did this time

If they’ve closed one stand then they will have used the reduced capacity to calculate the 15%

With their pace up front we could be in for a hard time for some of our players.
Looking at their game, and the comments of the Leeds fans I knock about with, they had a right go at Leeds committing players forward unlike most teams against Leeds who park the bus.
That might be to our advantage because we usually look better in an open game than against teams that sit back and invite us on making the pitch smaller, and can run into space down our left flank where where we get caught out one on one and the ball is pulled back from the goal line in our area.
-
If they rest a few, we may be able to compete, but, otherwise, it’s going to be a difficult one for us. Hull are different gravy now, since their managerial change.
A game to nothing and the players should go into it with no fear, but our current form is not good. On paper, we should get beat but it’s not played on paper, so we do have a chance.
I’ll just be happy with no serious injuries to any of our players!
-
We beat them comfortably pre season
-
Is it on TV...?
-
Highlights but no not live

Utterly and totally irrelevant. They're just training sessions.

it is on live as it's been chosen as an overseas FA cup clash but not sure what channel it's on

Oh nice I will do a search for it thanks

We can confirm our third round tie at Hull City in the Emirates FA Cup will take place on Sunday, January 12 with a 12pm kickoff due to selection for international TV coverage"

A long list of foreign stations broadcasting it from Argentina to Bosnia, can't imagine anyone in Argentina watching us for a tactical lesson in defending or attacking.

They might be looking for a club who needs a decent midfield player so they can be sure of sending their next Messi to a suitable club.

That made me laugh Hound.

More likely to be a Lionel Messy!

Where around the ground is the best place to park on Sunday don't mind walking 15-20 minutes away as well
-
There is pre booked parking at the ground.
Also car parks in the centre near the railway station are 2-3 pounds for 5 hours.
There is also a park and ride service.
You can find info on the hull city website

I suppose it depends on how fast you walk.
A nice Sunday morning stroll I guess.

I looked at some of those too.
Some of them looked quite dodgy.

Is Fleming unavailable due to bring on loan from Hull?
Hopefully Senior can come back in to the squad after being omitted for seemingly no good reason…
-
With the current state of play at Donny and a slight resurgence in Hull's form I think Rovers trip through the FA cup will come to an end. Shame, but that is said with a lot of regret.

I would be surprised if this one isn’t called off.

Don’t they look at the surrounding areas as much as they do the pitch? If concourses or walkways in and around the stadium are high risk surely they will look at it and with it being an early kick off it doesn’t leave much thawing time. I may well be thinking way too much into this. I certainly hope it’s on!

I’ve booked to park at Royal infirmary for £5 using the Just Park app. 10-15 mins walk.

Be nice for Billy to grab a goal at Hull.... at least he will have scored in front of them then....
-
Just been looking at the odds for Sunday, Rovers are between 3/1 and 16/5 to win which might be worth a few quid, but those odds do not count extra time or penalties
-

For those not familiar with betting, that means that if you bet £10 you will lose £10.
Just kidding, I normally have a go on us in the cup against higher league opposition up to the Championship and although I don’t really fancy us on Sunday that could be generous depending on respective team strengths.

Nope
-
Returned to Hull after his loan ended, might be involved in Hull's pre game team talk though with the management.
As regards to the game, although they are not pulling any trees up in the Championship the class of their players is way higher than ours, or at least should be, are at home, and have had a resurgence of form lately and come into the game off a very good result against a top side in the Championship Leeds while we have shown a drop off in form, can't keep a clean sheet, and some of our better players up front are finding their form and scoring goals difficult.
But it's cup football, everyone of us the supporters and the staff at the club are hoping for what would be a shock result with everything taken into consideration, every year one side over achieves and makes the headlines for a month or so, we travel hoping its our turn god knows we should be well up the que for a turn, here's hoping.
-
Hull has been an intelligent hunting ground for GM ..and Fleming hoped no doubt he would have been able to stay .i am surprised that Peterborough is never a hunting ground for Grant .

Probably because the P'boro mob would be looking at a money angle........ and GM and Darragh MacAnthony have since had some frosty words.... no love lost between them and I don't think we would get a look in TBH.
-
More importantly, will the concourse bars be open before the game with the early 12:00 kickoff?
-
Now hooped crusader that is the killer question. I have looked at the info about the game and for some reason that is not mentioned.
Fingers crossed.

Both Haks and Jon Taylor have been playing recently - would love to see them kick City in the stonkers !

Score prediction 1-2 us
-
A total free hit for us tomorrow, with over 25% of the crowd, ex manager and a couple of ex players going back, new young player out to impress on his senior debut. Away win with both teams to score at 6/1 at the bookies.
-
Up and at em this morning. ROVCOM 5 (or is it 1?)
I still love fa cup 3rd round day, even though the authorities are doing their best to kill the national game for their international whores.

There is a Fleming on bench for Hull City today but can’t be Brandon as he played in our game against Barrow.
-
It’s Tyrell Sellars-Fleming.
-
Ref today is Sunny Singh Gill who is very highly regarded and officiates in the Premier League. We should hopefully have a fair game today.
-
No Hurst, is he to be replaced by Street? I hope not.
-
Well, for those who say we are better without possession, today is that day. First half Hull have had almost 80 per cent possession.
-
Was thinking exactly same, we've let them have it with little threat while they have it, then hit on break well, bar that bit of luck they got with deflection it would be over now
-
Get innnnnnnnnn!!!!! :woohoo:
-
You red n white wizzards
-
We’ve got Grant McCann must really have put the knife in ! Well done for an all round performance team ..and spot on tactics to contain them and hit these on the break with a great through ball and goal from Molyneux .Our fans sang all game infront of a timorous home crowd .
-
Brilliant win!
-
We were well good value for that win.
-
Our fans sounded great on the radio. It's a hard listen when the commentator briefly interrupts Walkers ramblings for the occasional bit of match action.
Maybe a bit of a coming of age occasion for TSL?:
Was hoping we'd bring on Ennis before we conceded the equaliser as felt we might have got a second with a bit more quality on the ball.
A roller-coaster FACup tie and one of those rare turnarounds in the spot kicks. Wonderful drama.
-
Did the penalties get taken at the Hull end AND they got to choose to take the first penalty?
-
TSL pulled off a great save deep in the second half, and deserves more respect than he’s been given. Great keeper.
-
Great win, watched the game on tv, everyone put in a shift

What were everyone’s thoughts on the TSL potential red card incident? Lucky?
-
No, let’s talk about the 7 (seven) yellow cards handed to us for next to nowt!
-
Street made a big difference to us today, he could take and hold up the ball for us on the left which we haven't been able to do at all this season. Look forward to seeing him against L2 opposition soon.

What were everyone’s thoughts on the TSL potential red card incident? Lucky?
Debatable, some of our bookings were justified, I thought our defence was superb considering most of them were walking a tightrope for the majority of the game. Thought TSL got some unfair criticism for both goals last week but stood up well today along with the rest of them. Some good pens by our players today and their keeper got what he deserved for his shithousery. Thought Sharp could have had a penalty when he got man handled
-
No, let’s talk about the 7 (seven) yellow cards handed to us for next to nowt!
The ref was certainly over keen to penalise us and all too ready to overlook Hull's pushing and shoving
-
Great ball through from Sbarra for our goal.
-
No Hurst, is he to be replaced by Street? I hope not.
I would imagine McCann is still angry with him after Port Vale’s second goal last week. Fleming was blamed for the goal by many but Fleming got back into position and forced his man to release the ball for the runner coming from deep who was tracked by Hurst. Hurst tracks him but makes not the slightest effort whatsoever to stop the cross coming in and unfortunately he’s got form for that sort of defensive irresponsibility.
-

Ref had an absolute shocking game
-
We’ve had absolutely everything against us today.
- A ref who definitely had a Hull bet on. How many interceptions did he make when we were on the move. Those aside, he was shocking.
- A Lino who couldn’t keep up with play first half.
- Half the team on bookings, most of them soft as shite decisions.
- Ref blowing bang on 15 mins in the first half of ET, as we were approaching the Hull box (and after a good minute or two of fisticuffs involving McGrath)..so why blow bang on 15?
- Losing both tosses for the pens and shooting into an empty end.
- Unbelievably the Hull Mascots allowed to put Ironside off for his pen, then finally getting told to move.
What a f**king performance from the boys, proud of every one of them!

You forget to mention being away from home at a team two divisions above.
Wholeheartedly agree we've beaten the odds today.
-
Just got back from game . That really was a win for the hardy lot that went in bitterly cold conditions . I thought the home support was pitiful. As was the pitch . And the ref.
-
And a penalty should have been given for throwing Sharp to the ground

Completely forgot about that!
Sterry was about to bring it down and whip a cross in.
I do remember seeing him talking to McCann shortly after so I wonder if it is a rule we don’t know about.
Didn’t think it was a Pen on Sharp though.

What was all that about? I seem to recall it happening earlier this season too, so must be some obscure rule.
Overall though, tactically superb, organised and hard working. Exactly how you play an away cup tie.
Street looks a great addition toe, he caused them problems all day and it created space others. Molyneux for one needs help from the other side.
About f**king time we won a shoot out.

It turned out to be an easy twenty minute stroll after a breakfast in Greggs.
-
Defensively superb today. Very organised and always felt we could scored on the break. Important we take that resilience into the Gillingham game. Well done to GM and his team.
-
Fantastic game to watch today, the lads battled all the way through against a technically competent side who in the end didn't have the minerals to win it.
GM must be well chuffed with that performance, the organisation and commitment, to a man was superb, we held them to very few chances and then rode our luck with TSL taking out their player, on any other day it would of been a straight red, we got that bit of luck and made the most of it.
Thought all the defence were superb today, with both Olowu and McGrath on yellows they marshalled their attack with discipline and patience. Maxwell coming back into some decent form had a good game along with Sterry who handled a very good player throughout. The midfield battled well with Bailey and Broadbent maintaining their shape throughout and covered the back line well. Sbarra played a great ball thorough to Mols for our goal but if he'd been as tricky and penetrating as their little guy (the no14) he would of had some game, everything we would wish Sbrrra would do.
Up top we battled hard for very little reward, Sharpe looked tired to me and struggled to get into the game, Mol's and Street both had good games, with Mols finding some form and fluency in his play, Street to me looked like what we have really missed up top, I'd play him at centre forward and let the others play off him, had enough about him to suggest he could play the position better than anyone we currently have with pace and skill.
Overall pleased to see the lads dig in when they had all the possession, GM's plan worked a treat and was executed with great determination and graft. If we can achieve that type of endeavour every time we play we will get where we want to be, when we believe in ourselves we win.
-
What were everyone’s thoughts on the TSL potential red card incident? Lucky?
Should have seen red ,but before hulls goal the ball did not go out and it would have been our throw in if it had of done
-
We played very well as a team today, concentrated and defended better, one of the few games this season when we have been consistent all the game.
Everyone played their part, and we created a great goal, show the same determination individually to win our battles and we will not go far wrong.
The test is bringing that play into our league form. I expected more of Hull, we handled them quite easily their best efforts coming from shots outside the area that our keeper did fantastically well to deal with them.
A good game , proved as a group we have the balls to do well, just go for it for the rest of the season.
-
What a performance, what a result, what a day!
The ref did his best to help Hull to win but we dug in and showed tremendous resilience, thoroughly deserving the win.
What a penalty shoot-out!
One of those unforgettable experiences, so glad I was there to share it with my brother and our fellow Donny fans. We were loud and proud today.
-
I have a mate who always says that the first team to miss in a shootout often wins overall.
I reminded the lads of that today after Joes pen was saved.
A bloke I have never met before near to us said the same thing.
It does happen quite a lot.
-
There was a wonderfully poignant moment today at the game . A load of their supporters started moving down to the concourse at the front to celebrate what looked like a nailed on penalty win. all of a sudden when their last pen was saved it was like a fire drill.
-

Yes, the mood in the ground suddenly shifted when their fifth pen went over the bar didn’t it.
-
Back home relaxing after going to the game and quite hoarse too. What a performance from all the team today! The whole team stood out, especially the defensive unit. I thought they all grew into the match and the 2nd half, we bossed it.
I am normally a nervous wreck when it comes to shootouts, but today I was calm, a bloke who was sat near me said that TSL would be a hero and so it was, but well done Gibson for slotting home under pressure.
I am buzzing right now and I will enjoy the moment. Palace might not be everyone's dream tie, but at least we are in the 4th round!
Edit: it was Clifton wasn't it who scored the winner, that's how much it has gone to my head
-
Has anyone got a video of our pens they could post up?

Chester conference semi final comes to mind with Jamie Paterson, I remember it well!
-
Another point , the whole of the north stand being empty was criminal today. We could have shifted a block or two in there without issue . Hull must be well off not to want the extra funds
-
Just nipped onto the Dull City fans forum and the first post I saw said:
“F*****g sick of Doncaster and McCann”
Hahahaha Love it!
-
What was stupid, and shows just how highly the paying public is regarded, when three sides of the ground is used take the penalty shoot out to the furthest possible part of the ground, and let them watch it from 100 yards away.
It led to gamesmanship with our first penalty when mascots did their upmost to put off Ironside behind the goal, disgusting.
-

It was out of order but also really funny when the two tigers hid behind the wall while Hull took their first pen ……. and then popped up afterwards.
Luckily the ref gave them both a red card and they had to go away.
-
It was nice to see us stick it up their keeper with his ridiculous antics throughout the shootout. Took 8 penalties of constant f@cking about before the ref decided to book him.

We’ve had 23 penalty shoot outs since 2005 (but of an artificial timeframe, but it’s one I can easily find records for). The team who has missed first has won 6 times so just over 25%.
-
Did anyone see what the on field fracas was all about? Seems like there was an off the ball incident which none of the blind officials saw. It’s been intimated that McGrath was head butted ?
-
I was in with the home fans and in a perfect spot for the penalties. Tried to keep as quiet as I could all game out of respect for the people around me but couldn't help myself when the winning penalty went in! I've never seen the seats around me empty so quickly!!

We’ve had 23 penalty shoot outs since 2005 (but of an artificial timeframe, but it’s one I can easily find records for). The team who has missed first has won 6 times so just over 25%.
That is quite interesting.

Did anyone see what the on field fracas was all about? Seems like there was an off the ball incident which none of the blind officials saw. It’s been intimated that McGrath was head butted ?
That Kitson Jaio who har was involved… A right thug he was.

I think Ben Close deserves a mention. I'm not a fan and have been very critical of him but thought he played a decent little cameo today and that penalty.....
-
The fans were as good as any player today, brilliant throughout

Brilliant.

Wow, what a team performance that was, brilliant to a man, & Grant got it spot on, well done everyone. Very proud of our club right now.

Thanks Peebles.
That really does show what a t**t their keeper was!
So glad he got his comeuppance!

Did the penalties get taken at the Hull end AND they got to choose to take the first penalty?
I wondered about that. I thought we were done for when the ref pointed to their end and a Hull player was clearly going to take first kick. Then there was Tigergate for the first pen and I thought no that’s it.
But I think they may do 2 tosses (and we lost both)? One for the choice of ends, a second for choice of who goes first.
If so it’s unfair. Before a match it’s one toss isn’t it? It was when I played anyway. Winner chooses end to attack or to take the kickoff. Penalties should be the same.

Same thing happened in the playoffs against Crewe. Lost the toss for the end and who goes first. I believe Ref can mandate a certain end is used.

The authorities need to look at that then. It’s clearly a massive advantage to get the right end. More fool Hull for not opening that stand!

They said on the radio there's two tosses. One for choice of ends and one for who goes first.

If you watch the game back you will realise just how lucky we were that they were so bad in front of goal. we could just as easily have come away well beaten four or five, not our fault, but that's football and we cashed in.
They ripped us to shreds down the left and put the ball wide of the far post from eight yards and headed the ball to our keeper from four yards while he was on the floor in the first half, and blazed two over from six or seven yards in the second half.
Some of the consistently poorest finishing from a supposed second tier team I have ever seen.

Are you on about our left or the attacking left selby?
The linesman flagged for offside with regards to the header from four yards so it wouldn’t have counted anyway if it has gone in.
-
Shows the gap though since we were last in the championship doesn’t it - as good as it was to win, we only created one chance and struggled to hold on to any real possession. And this is an against a team that’s struggling. 15 years ago we used to dominate possession at that level. Shows how things have changed.
-
Teams in our division have attacked us down our left side of defence as we are weak there, both in pace and tackling on the edge of the box, a good example the one they put wide of the far post yesterday, bypassed on the edge of the box and the pass inside the full back beaten for pace, very similar to Molly's goal but a poor finish.
Hull in contrast started the game with their little left winger the main attacking outlet, Sterry had his best defensive game yesterday and did well, then they went at our left flank and had more joy and attacked that side mostly the rest of the game as we rarely stop the ball coming in the box from that side.
-
We may have rode our luck at times & for sure Hull City look like a team on the slide but, I bet they would jump at the chance, even if they stay up, of having Olowu, McGrath, Molyneau & Bailey on their books next season.

Unless the game is at Charlton & the police decide which end the pens are taken!

I was wondering what would happen in this scenario:
Their keeper was booked for persistently trying to put off our players during the penalty shoot out. What if he carried on doing the same thing? Can a keeper be red-carded during a penalty shoot-out?!
And if so, what happens then?
A good one for the old "You are the ref" feature I used to read in 'Shoot!' magazine as a kid!

That is a good question Pancho and I have a feeling we might have discussed it before on here but I don’t remember the outcome.
However, if a keeper can’t be red carded (for two yellows) in a shoot out then what is the point of issuing the first yellow?
-
My guess is the keeper can be sent off. He could have a yellow already in the match. Then I guess an outfield player from those who finished extra time would go in goal.

wrong a keeper cannot be sent off in a penalty shout even if he gets a red card it happened this season not sure of the match

A little known law in the UEFA rulebooks allowed Emi Martinez to avoid being sent off despite being booked twice in Aston Villa's dramatic penalty shootout win over Lille in the Europa Conference League.
The Argentina goalkeeper was booked for time wasting during the match and then shown a second yellow card during the penalty shootout for antagonising Lille fans, who had targeted him all night, behind the goal.

Well that’s a shite rule then.

Thanks rich1471, I thought it must have happened somewhere / sometime.
So there's no immediate consequence if the keeper continues goading the opponent's penalty takers, but of course there would be a subsequent ban.
That answers my question, thanks.

non what so ever ,seems a very strange rule , a goalie at a penalty shootout to do what he wants knowing he cannot be sent off

Thanks Rich, that was the one we discussed last year.
Strange rules though, effectively then the keeper get a yellow card on every penalty and not be sent off.

Must be that same rule they applied when Charlie Austin was booked twice then at the EcoMoat.
