If the Crystal palace forwards watched tonight's game they could well be thinking Christmas is next Monday with our defence a total shambles and inept against an attack that just ran straight at us, only Olowu coming out of the game with any credit in the defensive department.
A game that is a free hit for us, and hopefully one we can recover from tonight's game and at least come out of with some credit, although that in itself will be difficult, but we need to try and get some pride back and at least look like we can defend.
What team will we now put out? the mass substitutions made little difference as the main problem was not the positions the subs replaced. Will Anderson be offered up as a lamb to the slaughter? really our only alternative at the back in our usual line up and we will be up against a far higher class of player individually whoever they put out against us.
Hopefully we can play above ourselves, which can happen in cup football, and they take us as an easy touch, make lots of changes and have a bad night with the stars aligning for us. and we can pick ourselves up off the floor.
And if Olowu plays well and shows his form against them, will that be a signal for clubs to chase him for next season?
What do you think? a big crowd hoping for a miracle, a great atmosphere and the chance to see some great gifted players at close quarters, the only bad note it is not at a weekend when lots of youngsters could have come to the game and seen some star players they see on the TV in person.
Lot's to mull over after tonight, hopefully we do ourselves credit on the day, and wouldn't it be just like us to do what looks imposible tonight and cause a shock, please have your say.

For our own confidence this game takes on the mantle of more than just a FA cup game.
Most will be well aware that even if we give it a good go we are still in danger of being well beaten with the class of player they can field way above anything we have.
Of course there have, and always will be shock results in the FA cup, and I am sure all of us are hoping for one we can talk about for years, but with the amount of money swilling around the premiership those opportunities are becoming rarer and rarer, and with a good percentage of floating supporters in the crowd on Monday we can get some credibility back after the poor performance last evening.
But if they dish out another shoeing on the bounce to us it will not go down too well to attract them back again, but of course if we pull a shock result off or at least run them close, they will have been Rovers supporters for years. Let's hope its the latter and we can at best pull it off, or at least run them close and come out of the game with some credit, and attract some new young supporters.

Tactically I hope we go with three centre halves. Need to be great in both boxes in these games, and that will help. No point trying to stop top cksss teams controlling the middle of the pitch because that’s really hard to do. Palace are one of the the counter attacking teams in the Prem as well, having an extra man in that area will help situations when they turn over possession quickly. I’d play a 3511 type setup. Moly in the hole behind Ironside. Similar to how Forest set up against Brighton last week.
-
Hope we give them a run for their money and put on a show for the support who are maybe coming for the first time. Hopefully some of them will come back and boost attendances for the remaining league games. Who knows we might even win. If we do get a second hammering on the bounce, I hope it doesn’t upset the confidence too much. Salford were flying before city battered them and they’ve struggled somewhat since.
-
I think it will be almost a carbon copy of the game 6 years ago. Palace will have most of their big guns on the bench, but won't need them. They'll cruise along without getting out of 3rd gear, and win by a couple of goals.
It won't be a thrashing, but probably boring, same as last time.
-
Would be great if we could at least score a goal to give the fans something to shout about.
The result doesn't really matter, it's a bonus game, so let's see how long we can stay in the game, albeit we're likely to be chasing shadows for long periods.

That’s great Scawsby, thanks for that positive rallying cry!

I’m watching the Man Utd versus Leicester game because I want to do a bit of scouting about our possible opponents in the 5th Round.
Man Utd really look a very average team. Losing 1-0 at half time.
Amorim has a big job to turn this team around.

There's a big difference between negativity and reality, PR.
Besides, the Grimsby game is far more important than the Palace game.

There certainly is a big difference between negativity and reality Scawsby.
As indeed there is a big difference between pessimism and optimism.
When faced with a huge challenge, I’ll choose the latter.
Grimsby is another game, another day. I won’t be thinking about that when I take my seat on Monday night.
-
For the team and supporters I hope we can put in a good performance and show what we can do.
But we need to be out of the Cup if we want to be promoted automatically from league 2. The way our game has been put on I player on Monday night and lost the club £85000 in TV revenue shows the glory of the cup means nothing. This might be a negative view but for me promotion is the priority for the club this season.
-
For those travelling to the game and may not be aware, there are signs up on Leger Way that it is closed overnight (7pm-6am) for 2 weeks from the 3rd Feb. Seen the sign up just after Armthorpe Road roundabout heading towards the race course. So some may want to take an alternative route.

McGrath and Clifton definitely out. Molyneux and Ironside are doubts for the match.
-
Just read that what a shame for Jay
-
I’ve just seen the Leyton Orient captain being interviewed at half time, can’t ever remember a player doing that on any live match before
-
If we go with two center backs with one of them being Tom Anderson we'll get annihilated.
-
Will be interesting to see what team Grant picks, does he pick a rotation squad and get the players that didn’t play against chessy a chance to prove themselves or does he go best 11 to try and make up for the horror show.
Just hope we have a good go and don’t get embarrassed
-
DO he (Anderson) is a far better defender than McGrath, and probably as quick although right sided and Olowu will probably play left side which hopefully takes nothing away from his game.
-
We have to play a 3. With or without JM.

Agreed, could possibly drop Bails in there!

Olowu, Anderson, Senior for me.

Imagine some of their pacey attackers getting behind him.
-
I see the Fifth round draw is on Monday at 19.10....... might be an incentive for both teams...
-
Apart from Olowu and Faulkner that goes for every defender we have on our books DonnyOsmund

agree with this. Some of our best performances this season have been with 3 centre backs.
-

Pace isn’t the main reason players get in behind. Movement, intelligence, speed of thought the main things. Sure Faulkner and Olowu are quicker than some Prem defenders but they will never play in the premier league.
-

I saw it happen in one of the earlier rounds.
-
Probably not Gaz, but at a club like Peterborough they might have when they were looking a couple of years ago, but I wouldn't let our lot market a second hand car at that time
-
Would go for:
TSL
Senior
Anderson
Olowu
Maxwell
Bailey
Crew
Clifton
Sterry
Sbarra
Ironside
-
If Ironside is fit.
-
If Ironside is fit.
Clifton is definitely out - so Kelly there?
I wouldn't risk Joe, or at best put him on the bench. Street or Sharp for me
-
If Clifton is out then yes, Kelly or maybe Broadbent and allow Bailey to go in a more advanced role.
-
If Clifton is fit
-
If Rovers cause a big upset, then the home game with Newport will have to be rescheduled.....just saying!
-
Just want us to make a game of it, and maybe get a goal.
My fear is that it's over in half an hour
-
Looking forward to it but I wouldn’t think Palace would need to make too much effort. We look decent against some L2 sides when we show pace and a bit of a press but let’s face it, the vast majority of our balls into the box end with no product and this is going to be a much more solid and organised defence than we usually play against.
Still it will be great to see and hear the place fuller than usual.
-
If palace aren’t winning by at least 2 at half time I would say it’s more embarrassing for them.
Most of us will understand it will be a difficult game and we all hope we can score and maybe keep a lead for a bit but anything other than a Palace win will be a shock
-
I am hoping for it to be nil nil halftime would take that and then see how we go on second half hopefully kicking towards the South stand
-
If Ironside is fit.

Got to be Street. In a game like this he’ll offer far more of an outlet than Sharp.
He’ll be well up for it too, given that he came through the Palace academy.
-
Don't worry guys. We will be in the draw for the 5th round for sure !
-
Take inspiration from Plymouth beating Liverpool and little Queens Park beating the mighty Rangers on home turf.
It's a funny old game.
-
So long as we don’t get any more injuries or silly red cards, I’ll be happy.
-

Said much the same on the tickets thread - enjoy the game, make a match of it, but don’t over commit.
-
I feel this group of players are as good as the side that beat QPR in 85/86 seasons FA Cup at Belle Vue if not better.
However, Palace are a better side (in their time & QPR’s in theirs) so while I don’t expect anything but us being on the end of a defeat, I hope Grant can get Rovers playing without trepidation & absolutely no fear & regardless of when we might concede (gawd forbid the first 5 minutes!) whoever he chooses to play they do so to the very best of their abilities.
A fantastic opportunity for some of our young loanees to show they can ‘shake off’ the Chesterfield result & compete head to head against the best players they will have ever have shared a pitch with in a highly charged atmosphere.
Ideally a first goal to Rovers tomorrow night would have the place rocking. Whatever happens next (apart from a rout!) be it a loss by a couple of goals I would realistically accept.
-

Unlike any other Yorkshire club.
-
It's cup football, two hard basic head it kick it and make tackles central defenders have just seen off Liverpool, made it uncomfortable and physical and a battle down the middle all afternoon, carried a bit of luck and worked hard, one even losing a tooth in the process.
Anything can happen if you don't sit back and give everything.
-
We've got nothing to fear from Crystal Palace.
What a cup run we've had already: -
- Lasting longer in the competition than any other team from Yorkshire, the biggest county in the land.
- Got to the last eighteen teams standing
- Already confirmed in the 5th round draw
- Lasted longer in the competition than Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs
And who are Crystal Palace anyway? They're not even the best team in their own city. Nowhere near. And never have been.
Crystal Palace! It's not even a place. Just named after a building which was destroyed nearly 100 years ago.
Rovers to win comfortably. :rtid:
-
Potential line up. IMO we need to have some more defensive cover than usual. Ironside a maybe so could put Billy in, bit of noise against the better defenders? Or Ennis in the wing and Street goes upfront, offer more running and put Billy on later.
Who knows? GM....that's who!
TSL
Olowu Anderson Senior
Sterry Crew Maxwell
Bailey
Molly Street
Ironside
-
I fear their pace all over will kill us
-
Your probably right Filo, but you never know what might happen, 2-1 with billy scoring the winner late on, if they do win tonight i hope they go on to lift the trophy for first time.
-
Hoping we dont get battered but i am more concerned with Anderson coming up against Mateta!
-
I came across this article today. It is obviously recent and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone reference it yet -

I saw the list of McGrath, clifton out and Ironside/Moly with knocks.
Ive not seen the report on Maxwell. Is it a repeat of previous issues again?

Not to mention the fact that we're the lowest-ranked side left in the competition.

After all the talk of tickets , a big chunk of the north stand is empty
-

The end that was given to palace shame that we couldn't keep more back but I guess we expected them to sell out being a big club
-
I will say fair play to Palace in that they have played such a strong line up, certainly taken both us and the Cup seriously
-
Plenty to be pleased with and proud of tonight
-
A good effort I can accept that they all gave what they had.
-
Great effort from the lads, olowu in particular for me, kept one of the best strikers in the Premier league quiet all night.
-
Can we lease take note of that set piece that gave palace their first. So simple. So effective .

Not a single card all game .a rare thing

Their player was pulling Luke out of the way to give Mateta room. A blatant foul that the ref and Lino ignored.
-
Game was pretty dull in large parts as expected with a prem side hogging the ball.
Atmosphere was dreadful btw in the home end. Apparently football is more passionate the lower the leagues....
-
We could have nicked that on another day..both their goals had an element of luck about them.

Said the same about the atmosphere, was very flat.
Doesn't help singing the same format songs as other clubs just with name changes.
We've never been original have we.
Was very amused singing "is this a fire drill " at the day trippers leaving early. Couldn't even hang on and clap the lads off.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?"

The commentators on Optus called it, at least I think they called it before the goal, saying that that something was up, having that receiver of the ball in the block.

Yes! Saw that. Had his arm right round him and blatantly pulled him out of the way. Mols should have gone down.
-

This season can give them their best ever chance of lifting the FACup.
They are almost certain of staying up and looking at the teams left in the competition then they don’t have much to fear.
-
We just lacked the quality to ever bother Palace unfortunately. They kept us at arms length, a bit fortunate with first goal.We were very solid, but couldn’t keep the ball. Will Hughes controlled the midfield. I would have liked the manager to have kept Billy on with Ironside, but don’t think it would have bridged the quality gap.Good to see a big crowd for us.
-
That felt like we had a better go than in 2019. The statistics tell an interesting story. More possession last time than this time (47.8pc v 39.6pc) and more shots both on target (5 v 4) and generally (19 v 15) last time than this time. Blunt statistics but an interesting read. Perhaps Palace had weaker ball players and carriers last time in midfield (Schlupp, Mayer and Milivojevic) or more likely, we had much better than this time (Kane, Whiteman and Crawford).
-
Good effort. They have got quality players and would’ve needed to have an off day for us to have a sniff. Unfortunately they were very professional and did exactly what they needed to do. Had a couple of moments where we went close to pulling a goal back to make it interesting but wasn’t to be. As with Everton away, no shame in the performance though.
Good luck to Palace. Hope they go on and get to the final. Thought their supporters were brilliant last night.
-
Yes I hope they go on to win it if only for a different team for once, and the fact they beat us.
The main difference with our game last night was Anderson and his positional sense when we didn't have the ball, tackled well and didn't leave gaps around the box, also looked pacey at times.
Olowu our MOM by a country mile and really did himself no harm at all while in the shop window, if he isn't snapped up for nothing at the end of the season by a club higher up the pecking order I will be gob smacked.
-
The BBC report does not give Rovers much credit - comfortable win etc for Palace, but in the “Comments” there lots of compliments from Palace fans on how we played.
-
What was the mare getting into the West Stand yesterday though.
