Mansfield Town have refused to comment on Lucas Akins' ongoing availability after he started their League One match against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night, just hours after admitting causing the death of a cyclist in a crash.
Headline from Sky. According to Clough they've known about it for a while and chose to keep playing him. Can't imagine that would go down well with our fans if one of our lads did that and we kept him playing.
Mixed emotions on the Mansfield forum. Some saying they're uncomfortable he's in the team, some saying he should be allowed to earn a living for his family

He’s one of their better players, I wonder the attitude would be if he was just a bit part squad player
-
What do think how Brian Clough would deal with it?
-
Missed a last minute penalty at his old team burton on Saturday aswell
-
What's more shocking is that he has been allowed to continue driving since the incident and has only now been disqualified.

The phrase 'clutching at straws' springs to mind.

Two entirely unrelated and incomparable events.

Innocent until proven guilty
-
And punishing people twice is utterly opposed to civilised behaviour.

Correct. However, and I say this without knowing the specifics of this case, it can be entirely justified to implement restrictions or control mechanisms to protect others while court cases are awaited.

it's the same for any driving offence you only lose your licence once you go to court and are convicted, speeding, drink driving or killed someone

The key point I see here is the word "admitted".
When someone knows they are guilty and are remorseful, that makes a difference.
Whether he should still be playing, and in the public eye, is another matter. IMHO he shouldn't play, as a mark of respect to the deceased's family, but be retained by the club until his case is heard in court.
I can't imagine what his mental state is either.

He always said it was his fault

I’ve been talking to a bloke who I used to work with who’s a big Stags fan and he told that Atkins was on £7k a week

Tragic case. Absolutely awful for all those affected.

He always said it was his fault
He dragged it through court without a guilty plea then changed it.

We will remember the case of Niall Mason whose offence was less serious than causing death. My recollection was that the decision to terminate his contract was generally approved by Rovers’ fans.

Let this be a lesson to everyone, one minute minding your own business, the next a life changing event happens.
No winners here, and I say this having been in a similar situation.

Did you have an accident in paradise? Sorry if that’s making light of a bad thing but your username and all that…

He never said it was his fault until the trial.
For three years he continued on with his life like nothing had happened whilst two other families lost a son and a husband had to wait for justice whilst knowing he - and Mansfield Town - were doing just that.
Detective Sergeant Alex Booth of West Yorkshire Police, who led the MCET investigation, said: 'Our thoughts are with Adrian's family following the sentencing of Lucas Akins today.
'Adrian was a much loved husband and son, and doting father to step daughter Evie and his family's anguish at his loss has been heartbreakingly apparent to the team during the investigation.
'This case sadly reaffirms the danger all of us can pose to others when we drive our cars and the dreadful consequences which can result in not driving to the standards we should.
'Akins must live with the knowledge his actions have caused absolute devastation to a family, and robbed a man who lived life to the fullest of his future.

In the Mansfield squad list for this season and free to play when released, expected in a few months.

Same but until 97, some nights that will live with me forever. All about the music. Did you go to any after parties?
