Title: No game next weekend so lets talk about the fixtures of teams around us
Post by: selby on March 17, 2025, 10:59:51 am
A very quiet week with no games in midweek in the division but next Saturday we have games being played that can effect our position in the league table.
Bradford v fast improving  Colchester looks a stand out result we will be looking at with interest, especially after Bradford's shock defeat at home to Tranmere on Saturday that burst a bit of a bubble as the Yorkshire Post were building them up to be something they probably are not, but will want to get back on track quickly in a fixture they will expect to be a very hard game against the top of the form table over the last six games.
AFC Wimbledon also look to have a relatively easy game at home to Barrow, Wimbledon having the meanest defence at home in the division shipping only 12 goals in 19 home games v Barrow who have only scored 12 away goals in 18 away games so looks a nailed on home win.
Notts County going through a bit of a poor run only winning one of their last five games are at home to our friends from Crewe, who played us off the park for 70 minutes Saturday but who we overran the last twenty minutes but will be desperate to keep on the heels of the playoff positions and looks a game that could go any way.
Gillingham v Walsall looks the closest game of the day, Walsall against everybody's expectations a run away leader at one time, but since January have fallen back, and Gillingham who pushed the boat out financially this season and were fancied to be up there in the division have really underachieved but I have the feeling they are not a team you now want to be playing in the last few weeks of the season.
Grimsby v Newport looks a home banker to me to keep them on the tails of the play off places,
Port Vale v Morecambe  looks on the face of it another home banker against a relegation threatened team , probably the banker of the day.
So not great prospects for us to hold our place in the division although it is football and at this time of the year teams get the yips not previously seen, we could definitely do with a couple of shock results while we look on with interest from afar.  What do you think?

Have to say, looking at the fixtures in April, some really tough fixtures for the teams around us. If we can look after our games, things could look really tight for top spot

The two end games are going to be real play-off type games with Bradford and Notts County, this team should be way ahead by now but they have let themselves down on a fairly regular basis. As GM said, he is going to have to drag the squad over the line, but I am also sure he can do it.

Sarcevic has a hamstring problem and could be missing from Bradford City’s team for up to a month.

With our form been so patchy at the moment I’m fairly happy the games been moved. Hopefully we find some consistency before we move lay it.

A proper spell on the training ground with no games could be used very well by GM to iron out our game. Be very disappointed if 1st game back we look like strangers!

There aren't really any easy fixtures in this league, or any for that matter, but I've been looking through the fixtures and form tables tonight

Interesting bits:

Colchester to play:
Rovers
Bradford
Notts C

Bradford to play:
Rovers
Notts C
Port Vale
Colchester

Wimbledon to play;
Rovers
Walsall
Port Vale

Crewe play them all and still fighting for playoffs.

Port Vale play a few in and around playoffs.

We look to have more of the teams 'out of form'

Bradford have most of the form teams.

Colchester are the in form team and they play Bradford and Notts C before they play us.

Wimbledon play Walsall before they play us

There is a LONG way to go in this league yet. With everyone playing each other there will be points dropped pretty much every week to the end of the season. We need to get a winning run together sharpish and we could still be champions.

Yes. It's clear that a winning run would deliver the goods alright. But there's  been sod all evidence all season that we are capable of such a thing - particularly against the better teams.....

I live in hope. But not in expectation..

It’s such poor quality and puts some of Rovers’ performances in perspective. Crewe seem to be capable of better football, but Notts have managed to keep up the pressure but with really poor finishing.

1-1 draw for me couple of red cards for goalkeepers, fans on pitch big fine for both teams multiple yellows would be perfect

Colchester dominated the first 10 minutes or so, but Bradford have got back in the game. The quality is better than Notts/Crewe especially from Col U, but Bradford are very industrious and once they had settled after the initial pressure they have been a constant threat. (The United goal was something of a breakaway.)

Based on our recent form, we would find it very hard going against either team.

As it stands Notts, Vale and Walsall all failing to win. We’d have probably taken that.
It was always going to be difficult to watch the results come in with no game ourselves. At least 3 of them are dropping points in very winnable games.

Vale now winning ffs!

B*llocks. Been betting on the teams around us for a few weeks (which has worked like a charm, by the way); tried to put a treble on PV, Bradford & Wimbledon today but didn’t have any money in my account (given the last few weeks!) and didn’t have my card to hand to be able to top up. A fiver would have won the best part of £40 as well.

EDIT - just seen about the Barrow equaliser, feeling even more chuffed with that now!

We simply have got to start winning games consistently. I honestly don't fancy this team in the play-offs in front of big crowds.

Can't have been too far off the last kick of the game.

Wimbledon had one more attack which finished with a corner awarded and then the whistle went. They ought to be beating Barrow but their defence didn’t look too solid.

It will be a huge wasted opportunity if we don’t take the slip ups that are continually being presented. This league really isn’t very good.

Our match against an improved Carlisle next weekend is crucial. A win would put us in a great position because next Sat sees:

Walsall vs Wimbledon
Crewe vs Port Vale
Colchester vs Grimsby

Then Accrington vs Bradford and Newport vs Notts County maybe not the easiest away matches

I’d be surprised if we did. They’ve had a lot of draws recently but their performances have been ok. Wouldn’t surprise me if they win 3 or 4 on the bounce at some point and pretty much put the autos to bed.

It may be a poor league, not sure how that’s ever measured? However it’s turning into such a belter of a finish, isn’t that what we want? Drama, anxiety, joy, despair and so on. We’re in a great position for a heap load of all that. Bring it on.

How much notice do they have to give to switch the date of an EFL fixture?

I’ve just looked up how much notice Sky have to give to change a match date and came up with the following:

“Selections for matches scheduled from the first weekend in March will be made on a four-week rolling basis starting from the first week of February (for example: a selection for the first weekend in April will be selected from the first weekend in March”.

So if they are going to hijack the game they have to let us know by the coming Saturday.

The commentary said McCann and Byrne were both watching.

They did and although they were not abundantly skilful their work rate was outstanding. They looked as though they might be overwhelmed by Colchester in the first 10 or 15 minutes, but they slowly got into the game and then it was Colchester who were kept penned in. There wasn’t much height about Bradford’s attacking players, so it could give us some advantage there, but by the time we play them they could be home and dry.

I have a golf society outing on the Sunday.

You’re fooling nobody hound. You’ve a car boot sale on.

  Do people still do car boot sales?

I shouldn't worry, mate. EFL games aren't normally switched by Sky to a Sunday; it's either a 12.30 KO on the Saturday, or a Thursday night.

I hope that stays that way then.

We don’t have golf society do’s.
Just a round of golf, a bacon butty and a couple of beers afterwards.
You sound like one of those golf club bores that I sometimes read about.

Never been on a golf course in my life.

Keep a perspective & a sense of humour when all else fails you.

Oh I can assure you that I have a good sense of humour and appreciate funny posts.
You obviously aren’t up to date with the forum otherwise you would have understood the last line in my previous reply to you.
