Title: Let's talk about the Carlisle United game
Post by: selby on March 23, 2025, 09:27:30 pm
After a good break that came at a good time for the club when we were starting to face a bit of an injury crisis we come up against a side at the bottom of the division and looks a nice game to get us back on track, what could possibly go wrong?
Well quite a lot actually we are under a lot of pressure to maintain a promotion push which has been of our own making letting in poor goals defensively, and not being great in front of goal ourselves, plus getting some poor decisions from officials when the ball would have been put straight on the spot for penalties for other  more fortunate clubs.
As for Carlisle they have improved of late to be mid table in 12th in the last six games form table while we sit third due to two poor draws we could well have won, but equally had poor periods in the games we could well have been beaten, a microcosm of our season, good then poor in most games rarely playing well for the full 90 minutes.
Of the players injured Sterry brings most to our game alongside Olowu who has played consistently well and has attracted interest from other clubs so both will hopefully be fit to play, those two on form a big plus for our set up.
Carlisle looking at the table cannot afford not to be expansive at some point in games having to go for the win for any chance to dig themselves out of the mire, only three points jn as many games as possible now looking  to give them any chance of survival and again dropping out of the EFL into the National League, so it could and should be a good game to watch although they may go deep in defence hoping to grab the points playing the style of play we struggle against, probably the biggest conundrum their manager has to answer.
Ours is simple, we need to improve in both penalty areas get three points and move to the next one and repeat, we have the ability, have we the nous? and have we the ambition and confidence to play at the top of our game? and can we fulfil the clubs ambition of automatic promotion? a question that will become more clear every game now to the end of the season.
Lots to discuss, lots of things to find  answers to, please have your say.

Results have picked up recently (last 5 won 2, drawn 1, lost two) but last 15 form is poor (won3, drawn 3, lost 9). Bottom five away form this season and only two sides (Tranmere and Gillingham) have scored fewer goals away this season, than their 0.7 per away game. Their last five away games even undershoots this at 0.4 goals per away game.

It’s a must win game simple as that. I’m going for a 2-0 win street and molz. Rovers to hit post once crossbar once and have 2 stonewall penalties turned down.

Just watched the extended highlights from the Carlisle game. Yet again was impressed by the Bromley keeper, did some stats not long back comparing our keeper Teddy against Smith from Bromley. Ticks all the boxes for me, would love Tutula back, but don't think we'd pay that much, compared to someone like Grant Smith.

Played on loan for Barnsley against us a few years back. Took us to the cleaners, although we luckily won the game with a last minute goal from Chaplow.

I wouldn't give up on Carlisle just yet. They've got 3 winnable home games and 2 very winnable away games (Morecambe, Accrington). Hughes will know that 4 wins out of that lot plus a couple of draws along the way could put them in the mix. I expect them to look for at least a point on Saturday. Could be a frustrating day.

We relegated Carlisle the last time they ended up in the Conference. Penultimate game of Dave Penny's promotion out of Div 4 season I think. Big crowd at BV with a lot down from Carlisle. 1-0 to us. Paul Green maybe? They were a well supported club Carlisle.

Olowu, McGrath and Maxwell have featured in vids from this week. Although they were training, we don't know if they're fully fit. The only one I didn't catch in any vids was Sterry.

If any of the back four need an extra few days recovery I’d suggest the Carlisle game is it. Not taking Carlisle for granted but on paper the easier of the upcoming games for sure. Play the back four we’ve played in the last 2 games for me. All good enough, don’t want our first choice guys out for the season with a re occurrence

I've just listened to Woody's interview and he sounds like he's champing at the bit.

My guess is that either Olowu or McGrath aren't fully fit and Woody will play.

As said above, we play our best X1 in every game now.

Obviously we need to win this preferably by a 2 goal+ margin. Then all we will need for a perfect weekend is for Crewe to beat Port Vale and Accrington to beat Bradford in the early-start games on Saturday. Walsall and Wimbledon will need to draw and also a draw between Grimsby and Colchester in this evening's game.

Our best team over the last twelve months included Anderson and Wood in central defence. This season Olowu has been our stand out player, but the defence as a whole has been relatively poor for a side  that has aspirations of automatic promotion, with the defensive prowess of the other defenders having made  it relatively easy for him to shine as apart from Sterry him being the only one with pace to cover others mistakes.
Although not quick themselves Anderson and Wood are less likely to make those mistakes and are more experienced and positionally aware when defending the penalty area.

At Chesterfield and the games since he played in he has been poor probably carrying an injury that might still be giving him some trouble it was up to last week and is he fit 100% for this game? and if he is fit he is not as good as defender in our box IMHO as Wood picking up and getting tight to players, just look at past highlights and see who is in picture as we concede goals the most regular.
As a team we have been inconsistent in games even in individual games we have won we have had periods when we have been completely off it our best game where we were on it all the game bizarrely at Bradford, and our left side of defence has been the main target of most teams all season because of lack of tackling ability and to some extent pace and space awareness, where we can be run at and past and players are not picked up inside in the area. couple that with a midfield that has the same defensive deficiencies is the biggest reason why we are where we are, solve that and we have a better chance of getting up automatically, then we will have to look seriously at next season and where we need strengthening.
As for this game I would like us to try and find a way for Kelly and Crew to be let loose, and just let them play and want them to dominate, they do have the ability, they need to come to the party and show their quality.

Carlisle have sold their initial allocation of 783

With a good away following, it seems unlikely that they will “park the bus” and their stats, possession, foul count, shots on goal etc., seem to suggest that they are fairly enterprising, so perhaps it will be an open game.

Every game now is huge but the next two are massive. Two sides at home and despite our fairly uninspiring home form, playing the second bottom side and a dramatically out of form Walsall, we could have far tougher tests. Get these two won and some real sense of momentum while everyone around us is spluttering. Would strike a massive psychological blow at the start of this run in to the end of season. Hope we properly tear into them during the first 15 minutes.

Agree with all that CBcb we can put a hell of a lot of pressure on other teams around us if we find consistent home form, and we need to get rid of getting teams back on track against Walsall that is a big game.
Move DRFC I am nothing else but a cynical old goat, but if you were Olowu, or even more to the point his agent and know he has a good move lined up at the end of his contract with no transfer fee, with money that would have gone to the club swilling around that they could get a part of as a signing on fee and agents fees, would you play a lot of games and risk serious injury for the sake of a few weeks to the end of the season?
All guess work by the way, Just a cynical old git of modern players and the system, which is all about money, with clubs using players like cattle, and players in the game for what they can get while the goings good, with most agents just skimming off what they can get for as little effort as possible, and most supporters just seeing the perceived glamor.

Walsall-Wimbledon ending a draw would be ideal. Newport getting back into it too please.

Rovers made 6 substitutions. Hope this is allowed.
Concussion?

Their player came off for concussion so Rovers also allowed an extra sub.

Wonder how the points prediction is going to look now.?

I can’t see anyone getting 90 points - Walsall would need 6 wins and one draw, Bradford 7 wins, and us 8.

It’s going to be very tight from top to 6th I reckon.

Thank you so much Bessie Red - I had been worrying myself sick about this (see lucky pint)

I hadn't realised, or even thought that the other team gets an extra sub as well (have checked and that is correct)

Let's go for a perfect set of results. We beat Walsall and Bradford/ Port Vale draw, kicking on towards a championship. Too far I know, but you can dream.......maybe we ought to talk to our local fortune teller?

Great win, we need to Put in the performance of our season on Tuesday by beating Walsall and make a statement that WE DRFC want to win the league, as no one else seems to want to with the mixed results over the past 6 weeks

Let’s be honest they weren’t great but too often this season we have made very hard work of teams like that at home. We produced a lot and restricted them to very little. A good performance overall.

I can’t see Walsall finishing in the top three. They have fallen apart, a bit like Leeds did today

Great 3 points today, poor in the first half, better 2nd half. Bailey best player on the pitch.

Today's  game illustrated the virtue of having such a strong squad with quality cover in every position. It is what will see us through to League One football next season.

Tannoy very very poor in South stand !!!

New speaker setup for the tannoy system today.

My group plus others around us in the south stand thought it was really good.
None of that blaring too loud noise, we could actually understand what was being said in the Paul Mayfield interview and were able to speak to each other without shouting.
We sit left of centre.

Mid January Walsall were fifteen points ahead of us and had played one match less.
They had won 18 out of 25 league games and have won only two of 14 since then.

Much better in the 2nd half today, looked dangerous everytime we went forward, just need to be more clinical. Great to see Gibson have a decent game against his former club.

I have been saying for weeks that Gibson has been improving and just needed a goal to kick on.
Well, he got his goal today so I hope he proves me right in the final run in.
He has excellent close control and an eye for a pass.
Come on Gibbo, you can do it.

Clifton scores roughly once every four starts. Gibson around five and Bailey around eight.

Clifton a goal every 360mins
Gibson a goal every 380mins
Bailey a goal every 650+ mins

You can probably explain this by Clifton being encouraged to spend most of his time running through from midfield into the box late. Gibson either doesn’t or has been encouraged not to come inside so often as he did to shoot. Bailey usually marooned further back as the screen. Still, decent numbers for Clifton.

I'm late to the party, guys. My laptop packed in on Saturday, and I've had to get a new one. I forgot my Viking Chat password, and had to set up a new account.

I thought we looked like promotion potential on Saturday. Everybody played well.

Let's take that into all our remaining 8 games.

Watched some of their game on Saturday the wingers looked really useful and quick

Kadeem Harris? Ex-Wednesday player played quite a lot at Championship level
yes he looked a league above where he is playing now

Signed for Salford City, in the same league.
