Wow what an end of the season looks to be in front of us after last nights game, a good game to watch against a team that went after us and we had great highs and bitter blows in a result that was about right considering how the game went, and in fairness to both sides not a bad standard of football all the game.
Every game to the end of the season carry's the same threat, nobody is going to lay down for us, and we are going to have to play well to reach where we want to be. Last night we showed commitment and desire throughout the team who to a man gave their best and worked hard, as much as we can ask, ball retention could have been better but the pace of the game was energy sapping no team really getting a proper grip on the game.
Now it is on to Cheltenham who sit 15th in the table and last night lost 2-0 away at Morecambe not a great result and over the season have won 13 games drawn 11 and lost 16 league games and are basically seeing the season out, but will want to put a show on for their own fans, and the disappointment of a certain fixture that looked similar in the last game of the season still haunts me.
Play well and we have every chance of winning the game, take it for granted and we could well suffer the consequences as they will want to finish the season on a high and will see us as a tasty scalp that will raise their stock with their supporters in what looks somewhat of a must win game for us.
With teams tightening up points wise all with a good chance of winning automatic promotion the pressure is not just mounting on ourselves, and it could well come down to which teams handle the pressure and expectancy the best in what is now the tightest run in for years.
Managers have a hard job, we the supporters have our idea of our best side, it wouldn't be football if not. Last night our ball retention let us down, probably because Walsall pressured the man with the ball relentlessly as we did to them, Sabarra not great with the ball but worked his socks off tackling and winning the ball, not a fans favourite for the former but needed when we have not got the ball.
I fail to see the opinion of some that we missed Olowu and McGrath in this game as I thought they kept us in it against some big awkward strikers with our full backs being run at and past most of the game, again on the left a problem, it is all about opinions which this thread is all about, but Olowu has been our outstanding player accepted, but those two have rarely been tested to the extent Anderson and Wood were last nigh, I thought they both did well and guess work anyone could have done better.
Kelly and Crew are the mystery to me, they both have talent, both in a really good side would no doubt look the players we hoped for when signed, and personally must be disappointed they are not getting the game time they would have hoped for, the last two open games probably the type of games they would shine in, or has our talent recognition side of the club brought two in who don't suit our style of play? Probably not room for both on the field at the same time, but a disappointment at least to me they have not made much of a mark here up to press.
So on to Cheltenham, the games coming thick and fast and all on a knives edge looking at how other games are going, football a nerve wrecker.
No half way now, we have to pick points up, can we rise to it? two great games to watch at home, and decent form, can we replicate it in away games? are you going to the game? would you make changes? who is the biggest danger to us in your mind? I think it's us really, do you agree? are you going to the game? our support has been great and a great atmosphere which is building, the black bank the best since we moved from Belle view IMHO, nothing but respect for you.
Lots to talk about, lots to discuss please have your say.
-
I'd personally like to see Kelly in the number 10 role, he carries the ball well and looked really sharp against Carlisle in his fleeting few minutes. Sharp has to be close maybe to a start but Ijust don't feel our current tactics would be best for him, maybe a change in formation if we don't have a decent number 10 and play both Street and Sharp up top. Hopefully Maxwell is backand maybe McGrath who I would start for Senior and Wood.
Massive game though as you say...another one.
-
Anything less than a win, and it's goodbye autos.
-
Looking forward to it.
-
I wonder if a change in setup, parking the bus would have helped last night with 10 mins to go . It’s not a positive tactic, but not for the first time we have let a lead slip late on in a game .
-
I would start Kelly instead of Sbarra and push Broadbent further upfield. He frequently drops in as a sweeper, he needs to sit inside the centre circle and dictate from there
Either way I’ll be going. New ground for me to tick off
-

Yes, I think we must keep the pressure on for the top three otherwise it's likely to have a disheartening effect on the players. The game in hand doesn't come soon enough and will only be handy if we stay in striking distance.
I hope we have more options available with Kelly, Crew being added to the match squad, although my guess is McCann will only pick one at the expense of Sbarra.
We've still got to believe we can do this.
-
I'd like to see Sbarra dropped and Kelly brought in to start the game.
If McGrath is fit I'd put him in and drop Woody.

Amazingly it is the first time in the league this season. We have indeed conceded late when we were 2 or more up, jangling the nerves. But apart from last night, the only points we have dropped from winning positions are at Newport (1-0 up to 1-3, goals conceded in 49,66,67), Colchester (1-1 conceded on 51 mins) and Swindon (2-0 to 2-2 conceded in 50 & 51). We have done relatively well with important late goals (after 80 mins) this season: late equaliser (82 mins) at MKD, later winner (81) home to Barrow, late winner (90+4) at Swindon, late winner (90+2) home to Fleetwood), late winner (86) home to Harrogate.
We have had many seasons where it has been very much worse
-
Thought last night the game was crying out for Kelly but still not sure about starting him.
Being really critical Wood was at fault for both the goals last night but I’d keep him in
-
If the OP is referring to our last game of the 2008 season, Cheltenham were playing to avoid relegation weren’t they.?
-
Yes they were.
-
Yes I was IDM, but didn't realise they were playing to avoid relegation, ended up well though giving us a day to remember.
-
I was in a foul mood that day
-
This is a must win game. Cheltenham have nothing to play for, they all be thinking about their Summer hols.
-
They recently beat Wimbledon away. Certainly no mugs and we will need to better than we have been. I think we've been poor the last 2 games in general
-
George Miller may or may not start - he’s been in and out of the team for the last few months and only has 1 goal since Christmas. That was against one of his former clubs, Walsall, but I wouldn’t bet against him repeating the feat against us…
-
I'd like to see Sbarra dropped and Kelly brought in to start the game.
If McGrath is fit I'd put him in and drop Woody.
Would agree with that plus Maxwell for Senior if fit.
How long does it take to recover from a broken little toe?

Probably about four to six weeks normally but a footballer is more at risk of it being hurt again if the return to playing is too soon.
-
I broke a little toe last year. Hurt a bit for a couple of days but it calmed down quite quickly. It was a bit swollen , but there's not very much there to swell so wearing shoes was never a problem. Quacks said there was nowt they could do so just be careful for 4 weeks. Obviously, if it got whacked again it would hurt like stink so, if a footballer broke a little toe, experience suggests a month should be long enough.

Surely Anderson would be the one to drop out after he got bullied against Walsall?

Interesting view on Anderson.
He won 17 of 21 aerial challenges.
He won 5 of 5 grind duels
Made 14 clearances
82% pass accuracy.
He was the best centre half of the 5 on the pitch on Tuesday.

I thought Anderson had a decent game apart from when he switched off for their equaliser.
-
This is a must win game. Cheltenham have nothing to play for, they all be thinking about their Summer hols.
Or playing for contracts, or transfers, and with no pressure.
Not a game to take lightly at all..
-
They’ve won once in their last five home games, and managed one goal in their last three home games. Not in great form at home.

Strange how people see games different, I thought Wood was by far the better of the 2 CBs & Anderson was given a torrid time by their big lad up front.

The second yes, when he allowed lad to muscle him out. The first, both he and Senior should have been able to smother the cross but also Sterry lost the race to clear the cross. Prior to that, did Gibson do enough when losing possession and tracking back? Harsh to blame it solely on Wood.
-
I thought Gibson was the 2nd worse player for us, after S’Barra, of course. The first goal stemmed from him losing possession on half way, then letting their guy waltz down the wing and putting in the cross that led to their first equaliser. Nowhere near good enough and we expect a lot better than that.
It’s noticeable how Sterry & Molyneux have such a good understanding on the other side! We are weak on our left side and we should have that sorted by now!
-
Can’t see Wood playing his 3rd game in 7 days. And I imagine McGrath won’t be ready to start.
I think he’ll go with Bailey at centre back again.
Bailey miles better than George Miller in the air, it would be fine.
-
Wood has looked terrible. Anderson much better. Massive losing Oluwu having been so good
-
I had Anderson down as being good against Walsall too, IMO better than Woody on the night.
TBF, the Walsall front two were a handful, particularly in the first half hour.

You're right that people see games different, Albert. However, GazLaz is a professional statistician, and his stats aren't opinionated, they're facts.

Recently lost to Morecambe. Their fans think that their defence won’t be able to handle Street and Sharp. Hope they are right and we can get a hat full of goals, do our GD the power of good.

Whilst I agree entirely with what you say, I’d be more than happy with a scrappy 1-0 - the win is everything in this game! :boxing:

Unfortunately it won’t be Street and Sharp though Les, it’ll be Street with Sbarra doing the headless chicken, with Sharp getting last 20 for Street, which is why we won’t get a hat full. If this isn’t a game for two strikers then I don’t know what is.

Is there any street parking near Cheltenham’s ground?

Good question
-
It’s been years since I’ve been, but if I recall there used to be a park and ride at the racecourse?
-
Is there any street parking near Cheltenham’s ground?
Seems to be resident permit only from what I've seen, a few car parks in town, 15 minute walk.
-
Don’t forget like I did,1230 kick off.
-
James Maxwell, Jay McGrath and Joe Ironside all in contention.Only player missing tomorrow is Olowu
-
Those three back in the squad should make a big difference to the quality of players we have on the pitch.

ok - i'm very old - but I get XG, and pass percentage and a great many other things of a similar nature - but a "grind duel"- seriously - what the actual fûck ????

Out of interest Gaz, how did wood compare?
-
Thought Wood was culpable for both goals tbh
The second yes, when he allowed lad to muscle him out. The first, both he and Senior should have been able to smother the cross but also Sterry lost the race to clear the cross. Prior to that, did Gibson do enough when losing possession and tracking back? Harsh to blame it solely on Wood.
I'm truly prejudiced against Senior I know, but how can you credit a modern full back that doesn’t seem to tackle and rarely passes the ball forward. I do not define "smother" as raising a boot in the general direction of the ball a few yards away from him. Maybe I'm unreasonably critical and if there are examples of more positive defensive contributions please enlighten me.

He does put tackles in. And wins his fair share of duels and headers.
The stats show he does more than Sterry and Maxwell with regards to those things.
Obviously not as good as them going forwards but your post is wrong on defending.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a decent streaming site to watch the game on

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a decent streaming site to watch the game on
I have watched two or three matches on sport365.stream this year after it was recommended on here by SouthEastRover.
Open the site then click on “soccer” then the matches are listed in time of kick off order. There might be more than one option but i picked the one with the most stars (usually five I think).
It was sometimes tricky for me to get a commentary but with a bit of fiddling about I always got there.
I found it easier to get commentary if I watched on my PC.
Give it a try early and click on a random match to get the hang of it.
-
That's the one cheers Graham.
-
I've checked on that streaming site you recommended Hound and the game is showing as available to watch foc. I'm in Tenerife at the moment, so I'll give that a whirl and see if I can get it working nearer the time. Thank you for the recommendation. COYR!!

nc, I'll admit Senior is a trier but he certainly is not a left back (left back in the dressing room would be more apt, imo). Looking back to the Carlisle game the two great saves that TSL had to make first half were both the result of the same player making a monkey out of Senior, the first he cut inside and got his shot off and the second he left him for dead on the outside and got another fierce shot off that had to be saved. Senior didn't get near him.

I think Senior is a centre half but the fact he’s small means he can’t really play in a 2. Fills a hole at LB but for me he’s not a natural there, however much he’s played there in the past.

If Anderson is playing with Wood, he ought to be able to grind quite well!
-
Looks like we’ve 11 competent footballers on the pitch today. That makes a refreshing change. Would’ve preferred Street to Sharp but we can’t have everything.
-
I think you're both being very harsh on Senior. It's hard these days for full backs. As we know, many goals are scored from crosses but does that mean full backs are generally weak? I saw a stat earlier this week when rating the top 10 full backs in L2 (Sterry 9) and those with the best blocks/tackles only had success rate of around 40%.
Once a player has you squared up, it's very difficult to stop the cross or shot. In days of old you could mark more tightly by means fair or foul and get away with alot more than they can now so we see full backs standing off more often and at best trying to guide players where they don't want to go.
Senior has a natural bite to his game and over time, hopefully he'll control that better and work om his attacking side but he's got alot of the physical attributes you need.
-
I take it it’s not on ifollow today.
-
Kelly in for Sbarra, a good sub, he always seems very positive about going forward. More likely to feed Street for goals first half.
-
Is anybody watching it on fire stick, cannot find game anywhere.
-
Street is on the bench maybe second half
-
That Cheltenham Main stand brings back memories of Belle Vue!
-
Hooray, got it now.
-
Very poor game from both sides , Rovers not creating anything of worth and not pressing where it counts in the last third .
-
Hooray, got it now.
where did you find it
-
It’s flatter than a Sam Smith’s fart at the moment.
Not sure why we don’t ever deliver low and hard across the 6yrd box instead of standing it up at the back post, we keep floating it in and it’s not working.
Street on for Kelly to run in behind for me.
-
How was that not a penalty?
-
Looks like the only way we’ll score.
-
How was that not a penalty?
Which one ? The Refs is just not paying attention to the play . But to be fair a penalty is the only way we’ll score !!
-
Ironside’s miss as good as Marquis’s at Scunny.
-
2 - 0 is very flattering to Rovers, but current results give us a proper chance of winning again, and of Walsall dropping into the play-offs, next week and the Bradford game are growing even bigger in our fate.
-
These would be ideal now.
Wimbledon draw against Harrogate
Bradford defeat against Crewe
Salford defeat against Gillingham
Notts County defeat against Colchester
-
We made hard work of that !
-
Great win
Another one ticked off,
Superb week for us, 7 points from 3 games
-
Watched the game in The Yorkshire Grey and a good atmosphere in there with quite a few Rovers fans in there. I was getting frustrated as the game went on but Sterry's goal got everyone going. Really pleased for him and Street's goal made the points safe.
Three points are three points at the end of the day even if we weren't at our best
-
We made hard work of that !
Against 10 men our play only got better in the final 10-15 mins . Good goals and s need for the team to be more assertive and carry the threat better as we have the fitness and the ability just lacking belief in front of goal !!
-
Poor performance but I'll definitely take the 3 points. We just don't seem to create much and I thought we'd never score. Red card probably just swung it for us. Been said before but we HAVE to finish top 3 as I honestly don't fancy us to beat anybody over 2 legs on that showing. Ref was awful again but Cheltenham never really threatened. Another tricky game chalked off and onwards we go. :rtid:

Apart from Tranmere every other game is top 8. Worrying on the last 3 games showings.

Molly was the creator for both goals today. As has been said by others we would not be in the promotion places without him this season.

It was sbarra that ran down the wing and had a shot that the keeper saved before street showed nice patient skill to lift it over the keeper
-
I’m so chuffed for the 683 Donny fans who travelled today.
They came over loud and proud the whole match and they went bonkers with those two late goals!
A happy journey home for them!
-
We were (Mols apart) so poor against against a very mediocre Cheltenham side I just couldn’t see us winning this game especially when on 82 minutes Ironside contrived to shoot over the bar from a yard out.
Thank gawd McCann through caution to the wind & pushed Sterry further up. Mols got the ball wide on the left from just inside their half & skinned their full back but his cross into the box was too high & long I’d thought until Sterry wide right controlled it on his chest & drilled the ball goalwards. It took a deflection but I still reckon it would have gone in regardless.
The second from Street in added on time was scored from the most acute angle as he chased a ball most would have given up on & almost from the byline managed to wrap his left foot around the ball, past a surprised keeper & into the net.
2-0 flattered us after playing against 10 men from 55 minutes on.
We need to win at home on Saturday, before two tricky away games (given the way we played today) then Brad City at home for goodness knows what….automatic promotion….top spot….a play off spot.
Plenty of twists & turns as the rest of today’s games enter the 20th minute.
C’mon Crewe!!!
C’mon Colchester!!!

There's a lack of belief in defensive areas at times, ball just punted upfield instead of getting it down and playing to a man.
-

Yes and prior to that Molly opened up play from the left back position by beating 2 players and threading it through to Sbarra.

We are a negative bunch aren’t we!
Just won 2-0 away from home and so many posts trying to argue why that’s not good enough.
We could’ve had 5 in that second half so not sure what game people were watching if they’re saying we didn’t create much

Social media is full of them mate, not as annoying as the guy who sits behind me in the west stand who moans at every miscontrol, poor or misplaced pass, players being out of position etc, he seems to forget he is watching league two football and not the premier league!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion Orwell would all be zombies.

Just got to take each game as it comes now. I’m convinced though we have to beat Wimbledon next week if we are to go up. I honestly think if we do that we will make it. We probably need 3 wins and a draw from our last 6 games
-

Such an easy target. The only bit of quality prior to the goal came from him when he hit the post. Inches away from a wonder goal.

Not bad for an away team.

Disagree. Luke's quality put Ironside in for a sitter that I could have scored.

Bloke 3 rows back & to the side of me giving Gibbo grief from Ist half onwards “MOVE GIBSON”, second half…”GET GIBSON OFF!”.
Took great delight when he crossed the ball for Billy’s goal to turn around to him & shout “Great ball from GIbbo eh?”. He nodded & started talking to his mate.
You have to ‘call’ them out.
Well, I feel I have to. P’raps it’s just me.
-
I thought that there was more effort than we’ve seen in some games recently, but the fact that we could not score sooner means that:
1. We give Cheltenham credit for their performance. They didn’t park the bus, they didn’t allow us space and carried on trying to score.
2. Despite a good deal of effort from most of those in Rovers shirts - and Sharp exemplified that by getting back and defending when necessary - a lot of our players didn’t show enough skill and imagination to make enough of a difference. We could do with more Baileys, Molys, Sterrys and Gibsons, players who have the confidence to hold the ball, run with it and be creative. (Kelly and Crew?) Incidentally do we have a better header of the ball in attack than Bailey?
I thought the ref. was one who let the game flow and if I dare say so, I think we probably got away with a few dubious challenges.
-
Kelly didn't play particularly well in that in pivotal 10 position. I know it's easier coming on later in the game when there's more space.
Vital three points. Let's keep ticking them off

Didn't like the dogs abuse Gibson was getting.
That was me Usher, as I said at the game if you think 1 cross makes up for 90mins of shite then we have a different mindset.
Generally I don't get on players backs and there is no animosity between us pal, I just get SOOOO frustrated with Gibbo not working hard enough. His body language was shocking and it was the same today against Chelt. Other night he lost the ball and didnt chase back and a goal came from it. Mid second half today the RB got the ball and was running forward Gibbo was jogging behind him not even half an effort to get back. Does my head in!
I can understand a striker getting away with disappearing for a full game and scoring but midfielders can't dissaper for 90mons and make 1 cross.

Cheltenham got away with probably the biggest escape of the game when their defender wiped out Rob Street when he was about six or seven yards from goal.

Some defensive comparisons per 90. Gibson on the left and Mols on the right. Mols praised for his defensive output and Gibson slated.
This is not anti- Mols by the way. Just sometimes perception counts for more that what is actually happening.

I've said it a few times Gaz, it's the body language, he looks so disinterested.
And this end of the season emotions take over :chair:

I agree. He looks lethargic.
I’d be really interested to see our two wingers in L1 next season and who transitions to the level above the best. Make no bones about it Gibsons underlying numbers in nearly all areas are the better of the two but Mols end product has been dynamite for 12 months. Over performing wildly goals wise.
You’d think, given his output, teams should be queueing up to sign Luke.

I've liked Gibbo from day dot, just want him to work back.....maybe because it was always instilled in me that no matter the talent you still have to work.
Everyone watches and KNOWS he could give more for the team......

Great win
Another one ticked off,
Superb week for us, 7 points from 3 games
What would 9 points have been if 7 is superb.

Magnificent, outstanding, perfect?
Any of the above

Poor performance but I'll definitely take the 3 points. We just don't seem to create much and I thought we'd never score. Red card probably just swung it for us. Been said before but we HAVE to finish top 3 as I honestly don't fancy us to beat anybody over 2 legs on that showing. Ref was awful again but Cheltenham never really threatened. Another tricky game chalked off and onwards we go. :rtid:
Apart from Tranmere every other game is top 8. Worrying on the last 3 games showings.
If 7 points out of 9 is worrying then I don’t know what to say anymore
-
1 pen all season
Hit woodwork more times than anyone else
Scored plenty compared to others
Winning the league is in our own hands with 6 to go
But still plenty of doomers ready to say we’re sh+T and we could’ve, should’ve, would’ve.
Move on folks it’s a biggy Satdee…

Where I would take issue with you is shouting for a player to be taken off when he is making a positive contribution to the game.

Dont understand Pancho? Yes he MADE one positive contribution with the cross on 84th minute. That doesn't mean he was MAKING a positive contribution to the game for the other 83 before that?

For me it was another underperformance from Gibson.
Ok unlucky to hit post, but could he have scored yes possibly.
However my main concern is his work rate for the team, he just does not want to get involved when he’s not got the ball.
The example of running behind the right back was typical, he was just jogging behind him, no attempt to run after him quickly, he has enough pace to have got into a position where he could have challenged the player, instead he left him clear to be able to take time to make a pass.
This is just so poor.

Defensive comparison to Mols (again, no slight on Mols, just a like for like position comparison) yesterday…
Gibsons numbers on the left, Mols on the right.
I do think some players look to be charging around more than others so it looks like they are working harder but they can in essence be achieving nothing in the way of stopping the opposition playing.

The examples given of Gibson blatantly choosing to not do his share of the defensive work are seen by numerous people and aren't imagined. If Molyneux was seen doing the same I'm sure it would be noticed and commented on similarly. You have nailed your colours to Gibson's mast and refuse to see what is in front of you.
-
Gibson's been much improved, going forwards, for me. A month or two back he'd get in good positions & nearly always pass back, now he looks confident in taking his man on & is about the best passer of the ball we have.
Those expecting him to be up & down all game are always gonna be disappointed, tbh if Grant's prepared to stick with him then that's good enough for me. If you are gonna call him please not at the games, unless you wanna destroy his confident, not sure why anyone would want to do that to any of our players tbh.
-
To add to that, Moly was fantastic again yesterday, especially on the left.
-
Hakeeb didn’t do any defensive work last season. Some wingers aren’t best in that area.
-
I don’t remember Cotterill doing much either..

Jump in Usher, shut these lot down....
Gibbo is clearly talented, given his stats in L1 last season.
His lack of effort pisses up the back of every fan who pays to watch or every half talented lad who wanted to be a professional footballer.
Shoot me down, and the rest of em on here........
