Fantastic he’d been showing how good he is recently anyway, but really highlighted it when he was missing.

Great signing.

29yo with the potential of 3 extra years.

Hopefully we release Wood, Sharp and Anderson in the summer and invest in youth. There’s no value in us to be giving (longish) contracts to players in the latter part of their careers. Two years for Sterry is borderline ok but contracts to the other three would be unthinkable. We need to change the entire thought process about what we are as a club. We should be moving through divisions with a squad that can evolve into a squad that’s capable of competing at the level above. I don’t think this squad has been managed in that way. There is a bit of rebuilding to do in the summer.

I think for Joe, it will depend on in which league we are playing in.

Hasn’t Senior also extended?

Yes. Both Senior and Broadbent had their deals extended, to now expire summer 2026.

Classy player.

His physical commitment matched by his ability to join the attack and link with Molyneux but also his positive approach to life at DRFC is a great attribute to the team.

Yes, that’s fine, but he’s not the only player that can add value on the pitch is he. There are plenty out there. Paying “senior player” wages with zero chance of return on the investment is not the optimal way to go for a club at our level. Nearly every player should have development age with the chance of money coming in for them IMO.

That’s my idea of how to run a club. Not everyone has to agree, it’s not the only way, but I’m consistent with my opinion!

Sterry has developed into a real star under Grant, he is more than worth his contract, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the team of the year for Lg.2

Yes, also pleased with this. I'm slightly miffed he's not been given more opportunities to take free kicks around the edge of the box after showing some promise. Similar with corner routines when he could come from deep to take a pot shot.

Definitely a player who should be able to step up a division without problem.

I understand your point, and yes we should have some of the squad in that bracket you describe.  But it doesn’t harm to have a cadre of senior pros - some of whom like Sterry may be in their prime - to help nurture the others whilst performing as a functioning and hopefully successful team?

That approach IMO is idealistic and is easier said than done.

Building for the future and to make money is important, but if everyone wants younger players you can find value and gain a competitive advantage in getting players who are at their peak now.

Look at Peterborough’s performance this season due to having an inexperienced squad. They had loads of money from the Burrows transfer that they could have just used to build a promotion ready squad.

For me, if we go up we should be making low-risk signings because our retained list won’t be looking league one ready.

We signed a player of this mould in McGrath and you slagged the signing off! I recall you calling him useless lol. Grant can’t win.

JM was really poor last season. He’s improved this season. I just stated what I saw with how the player performed in the games he played.

It certainly wasn’t a criticism of the profile of the signing.

McGrath only made 5 appearances last season, and only 3 of them were starts. The other two were very late sub appearances. Not really a big enough sample to judge a player on surely?

So on one hand you are insisting we sign development players with future sell on potential. Then on the other you write a young player off based on very limited game time. Doesn't make sense to me.

I looked at McGraths numbers when we signed him and he looked like a decent aggressive center back who likes to play a longer ball, which is what we've ended up with. It was just whether he could translate from Ireland to here.

No it’s not. It’s perfectly acceptable to comment on individual performances though.

Nor does describing the decision to extend Sterry's contract as "borderline OK".

Not sure I wrote him off. I just made comment based on his few performances last season.

I still think his ability and assets aren’t scalable to much higher than he’s playing currently. Hopefully he keeps improving and changes that.

On the other hand I was adamant Olowu was a really good player from very early on, even when others couldn’t see it. I trust my own judgement on players and I trust my understanding of what is the optimal strategy for a club like ours.

Based on current performances it’s fine. Wouldn’t want to be trapped in a situation where we have to give him a good wage at 31/32 and he’s not the same player.

Sterry has been very good this season. I'd argue third best player of the season after Oluwu and Molyneux. Maybe Bailey.

Nixon and Senior do a job okay defensively but these games they've played make you appreciate Sterry and Maxwell even more offensively

Think he’s better as the season has gone was poor early season anyone would think his contract was running out.

A very cynical and somewhat insulting comment about Jamie Sterry.
