Title: One player who has gone under the radar
Post by: ravenrover on May 04, 2025, 11:35:33 am
How good has George Broadbent been since Christmas?
Yes a couple of mistakes here and there but he has been so effective in that defensive midfield role. Some have said he doesn't play a killer ball enough, but his job is to break up play  in front of the back 4 and to give simple passes to players around him.
Well done George

He’s been good. Last season he looked like he had lead boots on and couldn’t keep up with the game at times. Last few months he’s been a machine in there, breaking play up, winning battles, and getting about the pitch to cover the back four. Most improved player IMO.

Been saying this all season the defence has looked much better with him in front of them. Big salute to Charlie Crew too he has been amazing since getting back into the team

He and Sterry for me I have ran out of superlatives for. And for me Owen Bailey IS a centre half.

Broadbent had really come on, especially the second half of the season, I really couldn’t see what Mcann saw in him, but that’s why he’s our manager and I’m not ! Credit to the lad, young Charlie, Bailey with Anderson and Sterry have all been a revelation this last half a dozen games! Well done boys.

I’ve been really impressed with Broadbent this season. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He just quietly goes about his business

My lad and I always try to predict how gets the first yellow card - it usually Broadbent or Clifton

I think it was clear, he wasn't up to the 'box to box' midfielder we'd been led to believe he was but thankfully, GM recognised there was a footballer in him.

When he tasked him with the anchor role it didn't fill us with confidence but massive credit to him for adapting to that role and getting better as the games passed. Even with a couple of horrible mistakes, Grant was patient with him, which was great man management.

His passing has got slicker and more accurate. Some lovely first time passes, long and short. He's also quite robust so he's up to the physical challenge and that probably kept Crew to fewer appearances

The guy deserves the chance to carry his development into League One.

I would say his physical strength has improved and that’s what has made it easier for him in that role. It’s still an area of the team that needs strengthening for next season, but we’re getting there.

I think George like a good few more has improved as the season has progressed, its been very noticeable that a few who have had critics in the past have steeped up to the plate when it was most needed.

That if anything is a sign of character and resilience, traits that are very welcome to have and we have been the beneficiaries of.

All good signs that this cohort have the capability to impress at the higher level. Well done fellas.

Broadbent was in a Sheffield United u21s team that was one of the best, and one of the best in it.
he was always going to be a player when he had a run of games at league level.

He's 25 in September and has got through over 80 league games plus 40 in other leagues. It is easy to forget his experience. He is now in his peak years as a central midfielder.

Great call. I didn't think my simple "like" covered it . So , great call again

Agreed. Been saying it the past few weeks. I'd be looking to resign Olowu and Anderson and have Jay and Owen too as our 4 CBs to chose from. Owen at the back gives us so many options to start attacks. And he can play midfield when needed to a superb standard too.

Time will tell, there were people on here who didn't rate George Friend ! Enda Stevens didn't look up to much either and had a good season in the Prem

I thought we changed him to a center back then he moved back to left back.

As I recall for us he was a crap left back who then shone at centre back after he got a chance through injuries. He then moved on to Boro where he was a brilliant left back.

he left us and forgave £100,000 the club owed him as I believe a great player as a centre back for us and a letter person giving up the money
