Maybe I’m reading too much into it..he’s supporting a religious church called rebirth which has its opening night in Peckham…maybe he will.be based down south?
-
If any will go leyton orient
-
He is from London,
-
I think a call from a club down south at a higher level than L2 will be very tempting for him, unfortunately. I’m just hoping our promotion will have swung the balance but I fully expect him to have been sorted out elsewhere. Happy to be pleasantly surprised though as I was last year with Molyneux. What a key re-signing that was.
-
He's from South London, his family are still there I believe.
We'll just have to cross our fingers & see what happens, hopefully he's loved it enough here for one more contract.
-

Can they afford him .. he’ll want t London wages plus . Cheaper to live in Donny :scarf:
-
A very reliable source has told me that Hull City are interested in Olowu and possibly Molyneux. They are in serious debt though and, rumour has it, their owners have lost interest in the club since becoming shareholders at a club in Turkey.
-
He probably has his own idea of how to celebrate but it was notable he wasn’t involved with any of the tomfoolery in Doncaster pubs and bars the last few weeks. Maybe not his thing generally but he was the only senior player I think who didn’t make an appearance.
-
He was certainly there next to Gibson in one of the videos later on into the night. As you say he doesn’t give the impression that pubs and drinking are his scene, but he was there.

He did say in an interview at the league awards that the lads convinced him to go out after the Bradford game but that isn't usually his thing. Obviously not a drinker.
-
He was definately in the Sal after the Bradford game as I wished him all the best.
-
Must be a manager’s dream. Sounds like he is at church in his spare time. McCann is never getting a 4am call from the local nick to come and pick up Joe Olowu.
-
He was definately in the Sal after the Bradford game as I wished him all the best.
If he wasn't, me and our kid had a photo of us taken with his twin brother.
-
That would make a lot of sense, it’s his twin brother that’s played in Joe’s place since Wrexham at home, such has been the amazing improvement.
Do note though that we didn’t appear to be substantially weaker without him in the final run in which included a pleasant 4 wins on the bounce. Perhaps we have a strong negotiation position after that.
-
Joe was out with the lads, but he doesn’t drink.

And how many professional footballers who don't drink in League two this season play for a team that finished above our team of rebels who had a drink after promotion?
-
RIS, it could well be a better negotiating position for us, but make other teams offers more attractive to him.
The time that has passed since we announced we had made an offer to Joe would indicate that he has also offers from at least another club if not more, or he would have signed by now.
The only other reason is that the offer is not to his liking and he thinks he can do better out of us.
My own take is the longer it drags on the more likely he is to go to another club and is just running his present contract down to June, and meantime his agent will be networking for him to get the best offer wherever he can.
Another big question is, if he does resign which Joe will we get for the money?, the excellent player we had up to injury this last season, or the injury prone accident prone player we had for a few seasons before?
-
London is his home and although I live a million miles away from Donny I have mates who saw him out after the Bradford and Notts games.
Do fully expect him to leave though unfortunately. Hope I'm wrong, but he's been a level above for over a year now.

Nothing against drinking. I was there with them, they deserved to have fun.

What I found most impressive is the team were given the ok to have a good celebratory sesh (well deserved), but after that it was back to business, they were straight back at it and took County apart, really professional. Notts County were the ones that looked like they’d been on the razzle.
Brilliant from the lads, they demonstrated the old saying….work hard, play hard.

Well he’s currently in Ibiza with the rest of the squad. Can’t deny or confirm if he is drinking or not though

Can see Bailey becoming a permanent CB if Oluwu leaves

I strongly suggest you stay off twitter tonight, especially the clubs account

Maybe a romantic attachment would keep him at Donny. Just a thought…

Any real new ? When does the offer of a new contract run Out?.

No

Tbh I don't think you can read anything into it until he either signs for us or someone else, you can't really believe anything said really. For example my misses nephew plays pro football and he's out of contract and has told his club he won't be staying as he's moving back down south..Yet they put him in there release list as in negotiation for a new deal..

Is there some foundation to this pal or just assumption now they are back from their Ibiza party?
If they are announcing in next couple of days it feels like they knew before the end of the season but didn't want to somber the mood?

Works both ways, as it did with Mols last season.

Yeah, Mols took a while longer though awaiting his return from jollies from memory. Hopefully Olowu is signing and they had to wait for him coming back to do the videos and interviews!!!

Can see Bailey becoming a permanent CB if Oluwu leaves
No
Why?
Whilst Bailey has been first class playing as a CB we desperately need his quality in midfield. I’d say its easier to find quality CB’s than midfielders.

It's an interesting debate this one, and I'm in two minds about it.
Thinking back to earlier in the season, we sometimes shipped goals far too easily and looked shaky and unstable at the back on occasions.
The two games against Chesterfield and the away defeat at Newport come to mind.
But in the last few games of the season when Owen played at CB, I felt he brought a calmness and a sense of control to the defence which we hadn't always seen previously.
Of course he is then missed in midfield, and occasionally in attack, but there is a strong case to be argued that he adds even more value to the team as a CB.
Whatever the answer, Owen's versatility is a nice problem to have.
-
Pancho the problem was down the left, not Olowu who's pace covered a lot.
-
I think it partly depends on who is in midfield. Bailey and Broadbent together imo leaves too much gap to the number 10 and the front three, and I don’t think it was a coincidence that, with Owen at the back and Crew in the middle, we were a lot more fluid and Clifton looked a lot better. I think there is a strong case that Owen is at least as good a central defender as he is midfield, especially as we climb the leagues.

You make a very fair assessment. I don't think Bailey technically is as good a midfielder as others plus, as you say, alot comes down to positioning and linking play. Certainly in the first half of the season, he would go wandering, leaving Broadbent isolated at times. He was probably trying to create overloads further up the pitch, where he could make late runs etc, but quite often our play was breaking down and we were left exposed.
In the second half of the season, paricularly around March we seemed to gell better with Broadbent, Bailey, Clifton linking better plus Crew and Kelly when called upon. Sterry also added to the forward threat too.
Crew is probably a better midfielder technically than Bailey but, Bailey has that X Factor where he adds more as a leader bonding the team together.
As a centre half, he reads the game well and as you say, is a calming influence. Whoever, he came up against, he didn't get overwhelmed so if McCann was to continue playing him there, who would argue? The good news is he, can do both and adjust in games at the drop of a hat so tactically it should give us some advantage.
We're fortunate that he's played every game for two seasons. That luck might run out at anytime, so McCann has to try to get the right blend without him. Without someone like Crew, that makes it more difficult unless McCann thinks Westbrooke can fill that void.
-
Must admit I never want to see Bailey in defence, as I see him being a key playmaker, but he’s been instrumental there in the run-in this season. And I seem to remember the winning streak at the end of last year he spent some time at CB too?
-
It’s a really tough one and I believe the main thing is to accommodate Bailey somewhere in the team. I think he’d add value in nearly every position personally.
He was incredibly good at CB at the end of the season. So good that I’d be inclined on balance to leave him there, especially as he’d probably improve as a CB with more experience.
We are so lucky, in so many ways to have Owen Bailey!
-
My honest gut feeling on this (and it’s just a feeling, not based on any info) is that’s he’s off and that this was communicated to the club so time back - regardless of the league we were going to be in. I’d imagine if he’s off, it will be a club closer to home.
Again, it’s just a gut feeling. But as I’ve said before, I’d be very surprised if he’s still here for pre-season.
-
I thought he would be leaving after the extended interview with Hoden, seemed to be a lot of what about when you leave etc, hope I read it wrong and he stays as I’ve been a big advocate of Joseph
-
My gut feeling and it’s nothing more than that is that he could be waiting on a certain London team, managed by a certain man who brought him to the club to see how they get on in the play offs. Again I’m only assuming but the appeal of moving closer to home might be appealing to him, but any offers may be subject to how they finish. Championship centre back he is certainly not
-
Confirmed now he’s leaving
-
Gone, good luck Joe.
I am very sceptical about the timing of the injury but it’s what they all do now.
-
Orient perhaps?
-
Time for Bobby Selby to step up?
-
I think we have been incredibly patient with him, great in periods but on the whole inconsistent. We move on and I trust Grant to bring in someone better.
-
Which manager ended up signing him?

Good luck and farewell Jo, you did a great job at Rovers, hope you find a good place to further your career in the future.
-
My money is on Luton
-
Goodby and good luck. Took him a long time to find his feet but there was always promise there and he fulfilled it with an exceptional campaign this season. Hope he goes on to have a great career except for the odd stinker every time he plays us.

GMs interview - Joe sat down with him before the end of the season to tell him.
-
Not a huge surprise but a shame nonetheless. Good luck to him.
-
Be disappointed if he goes to say Barnsley or another localish side anyone in championship or local to his family then fair enough.
Best of luck Joe except when you play against us
-
Damn. Really thought the promotion and improved terms might work in our favour.
That's football. Good luck Joe.
-
Money comes first before club, but no player is bigger than our club, move on and forget him, no time for some players
-
Good luck to him. An improving player and obviously nice human being. Will be watching his career with interest.
-
Stockport?
-
Personally, I never thought he'd go. All the best for the future, Joe. It's been great to have you with us.
-
Stockport?
Why did we not extend his contract and prevented this inevitable lose of yet another player who could have commanded a fee . Short sighted as usual .
-
He ended up showing the potential that he always had but managed to iron out his inconsistency and lack of concentration at times.
Good luck to him but other clubs might not have been as patient as we were. I’m sure that we made a fair offer so we now have that wage to spend on someone else. Until his late surge last season I’m not certain that the club would have kept him. What a difference a year makes.
-
A player with a decent value leaves for free after we developed him. Not ideal business.
-

We need to reflect on it and move on. It happens to some of the supposedly best run clubs, as it has with Liverpool and TAA.
-

It happens all over. Can he do it somewhere else without GM, he was struggling pre. We will find others
-
The power is not with the clubs anymore, it’s heavily in favour of the players now. Fees for players are also quite rare at any level, players prefer the chance to earn more as the new clubs don’t have to pay the transfer fee. I’m sure we’re all aware of this.
-

Works both ways. Maybe he/his agent didn’t want to extend or re-sign.
Why does it always have to be the clubs fault if a player doesn’t sign.?
Not much more than a year ago many folks would have been happy to let him go, so at what point should he have been signed on.?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
-
Reading or Derby I’ve heard
-
A tad of fresh blood in the team won’t hurt ! Olowu was the player I was most impressed with last season, but in Grant we trust !Maybe a chance for young Faulkner to take his chance !

That’s six players out from last season, McCann will have to be even more astute in the market to keep any continuity of style of play , it took him two seasons to get back and it’s a competitive league .
-
Shame that as he’s an immense presence for us and so fit and strong. I just hope he gets a round of applause if he ends up visiting us with an opponent.

Quite right. Having extended his contract already in 2023, why would you go back to renegotiate his contract 12 months into his two years, when anything can happen to a player. As said, it works both ways and even if you wanted to open talkd, his agent could easily advise not to in preference to keeping his options open.
Three of our other more valuable players in recent times, Marquis, Whiteman and Molyneux were all subject to the same process and all signed the dotted line for more.
We have to accept that players have different ambitions, motivation and priorities and the club can't always meet them.
-
Shame obviously a good lad and the last couple of seasons he’s turned around a fairly poor start into been a top player for us.
Big positive for me was Baileys performances at centre back and the midfields improvement after he moved means Joe might not be so hard to replace.
The big money, to the extent that we have any, needs to be focused on a centre forward and in midfield imo.
-
Goes with my best wishes. Always gave his best when out on the pitch and came across like a good guy off it. Loved his interaction with the crowd. Can’t begrudge him if it is a money move or one down south closer to home. Wish him the best of luck and will be interesting to see how far he can go. He has the raw attributes to play at a higher level for sure
-
Ldr, Bobby wants to stay and play at Doncaster, and is prepared to play for the shirt knowing he will have to work hard and play for it, and and is confident in his ability to do so.
He is a Rovers fan, it has always been his team as a supporter and he has had injury, and a bad loan player wise through no fault of his own in Ireland that he has had to get over and have made him a stronger character, and has learnt him life skills that he admits have been good for him, teaching and giving him the confidence to look after himself.
If he hits the straps here like he has done at Buxton, and he is capable of doing that in my mind, He will be gone for big bucks to the club in the not too distant future.

I've only seen him in Rovers colours Selby but personally really rated him. Won every header, every tackle, threat in opposition box. Reported to have come back into preseason as the fittest player. Unsure as to why he hasn't had a chance already other than GM having an eye to the future and wanting him to get more game time??? If that was the case promotion to L1 may make game time even harder to come by?

Got to walk before you can run Shelby. No point saying about a big bucks move because he has done okay at Buxton. Needs to try and get himself into our side first. Last I saw of him you could tell he hadn’t been schooled through an academy. Was great at the old school crunch tackle but was poor at a lot of the basics at a professional level
-
Good luck Joe. Thanks for the memories
-
Ultimately he's a player a lot of us didn't want around much longer not that long ago. He and the coaching staff deserve huge credit for his improvement and that's got him some attention.
He's a top man clearly a nice guy. Nobody to criticise neither he nor the club. Wish him well and move on. He's conducted himself brilliantly here i will never knock that.
-
Good luck Joseph, Bailey has already stepped up.
-
Who’s to say we wouldn’t have won anyway but what is a fact is after he got injured we went on an 11 game unbeaten run that sent us up as champions. We managed without him being even in the squad for what was our best run of the season.
-
No need to panic. We have played our best football of the season while he has been out "injured"? None of us wanted him to go but it is Joe's career and if he thinks he can make more money elsewhere that's his prerogative.
-
Not always about money
-
King Kendrick he was 17/18 then, and was only signed after a youth cup game v Rotherham after the game because Middlesbrough were going to knowing he was playing as an amateur if we didn't.
He Played a season with the academy while getting time off from Doncaster Tech to train and had to go back to college after training to do course work, the only player in the academy not getting paid on a scholarship.
The first time Wellens saw him play in that youth cup game he signed him when a Manchester United youth scout made enquiries about him during the game.to Tony Cook the then head of the academy.

A few times things worked out better by mistake. Street from wing to striker. Then a midfielder who is technically gifted in the line up in Crew.
-
Gone, good luck Joe.
I am very sceptical about the timing of the injury but it’s what they all do now.
Me too,I would'nt be at all surprised that Owolu was declared out for the season, straight after he told Grant, If your not committed to the club anymore, better to fill his place with a player who is committed and get them as much game time as possible to hopefully improve along with the team.
-
A few years back, with the 'Rovers in the Community' scheme, Joe and Charlie Seaman came down to help coach all ages at my junior football team.
Both players were super friendly, and were genuinely happy to be there.
In a practice match, Joe joined in playing, and his constant talking and encouragement to the players/kids was remarkable, and stood out above everything. It certainly underlined the knowledge and influence that professionals have, way beyond some of the cries we hear from the stands most weeks.
Joe has grown into an excellent CB at Donny, and I wish him the best (hopefully not in L1), but this, paired with Woody's retirement, only paves the way for Faulkner, and maybe some other young'uns to make the step up, but given his knowledge of the situation, I'm sure Sir Grant has an eye on a replacement(s) too.
IMO, Anderson, McGrath, Bailey, Senior, Faulkner is a great foundation on which to build.
Going back to my first point, and the community work, Joe was recognised for his contribution this year, and previously Matty Blair was a solid character - who would be the go-to-guy now for this? Bucket-hat Sbarra? :woot:
-

Makes absolutely no point if his agent or the player has made his mind up,for all we know he may have hinted that he would not have any contract talks until In his final months of current one.
-
Not a huge loss, one great season and 2 pretty/very poor. Didn’t want to pay Rovers back for the faith that was shown in him during those disastrous times we put up with him, and the development he was given, so poor from him.
Nice lad,etc etc.
but not overly bothered he’s off.
Last four games showed how much he was missed.
-
Flint is another who will be knocking on the door preseason and could well be the man to let Bailey free to carry on as a central defender.

Football can be a short career so I don’t blame him for leaving to make himself more secure and seeking a new challenge. I wish he’d stayed but he’s going, we move on and in Grant we trust. :rtid:
-
Not a great loss, he’s had some good games of late but Tom in my opinion was a more valuable asset. Olowu was vulnerable.

No way Orient will pay them wages!
-
I don't get why everyone is deciding this is money.
Joe is hugely religious and for a while he has openly said he hasn't found a church he can settle with here. Then a few weeks ago he revealed he is opening/founding a new church in Peckham.
Maybe that is his new challenge?
Football is primarily a job to these lads, I think we forget that at times.
Maybe he could be taking less money to be closer to home? I know I have done that in my career.
-
Maybe he's off to Millwall? The challenge is to convert all of their fans into upstanding members of the community.

I’d be laughing at my previous employer and take the money. Daft question.
As I said he’s not a big loss, more fool the new employer. If they’d got any sense they’d pay £50/£100k a year more for Molyneux, Sterry or Bailey or even Maxwell or McGrath who’s been very good from the word go and didn’t need 2 years to be decent.
-
Options coming out on twitter and the rumour mill already. There’s a big lad at Huddersfield been released who’d be a decent replacement for Woody, for example. Need a pacy defender to replace JO.

Genuinly believe best option is to 'convert' Bailey to CB. His reading of the game and calm head back there is way above our level. Not many beat him to a header either. Switch him now and could get over a decade out of him in there.
-
Could be alone here but feels more like a relief than a loss, easy for this to look bitter but I would absolutely love to see him in an opposition line up, straight away I’d think he’s got an error in him. I don’t assign any blame to the club either as some have said above, he hasn’t done anything prior to this season to warrant a new deal.. by the time he warranted one, he didn’t want to sign it. Simple as that - Next!
-
Not always about money
give over, it’s always about money, no more kissing the club badge, and you wait for his first interview for his next club, “best move of my career “
-
Meh, won't be that hard to replace him.
He was shit for 2/3's of his time here.
Even when at his best, he still had a mistake in him.

Heard Blackburn and Dull are interested
-
Fickle fans.
Up to a few days ago I would guess the vast majority wanted him to stay. Now he’s gone, apparently he was shit more often than not.
Give me strength.!
-
Meh, won't be that hard to replace him.
He was shit for 2/3's of his time here.
Even when at his best, he still had a mistake in him.
Almost as if he was a central defender in his early 20s developing and improving over time.
A strange concept I know.

He wasn’t shit, he was a young player with lots of potential, some of us could see that, yes he made a mistake or two, but show me a L2 player that doesn’t make a mistake. His pace will be a massive loss, especially if the other CB doesn’t have pace
-
It was great to see Joe blossom last year and his performances were generally a solid 8 out of 10. A lovely fella too. I wish him all the very best wherever he ends up.
-
Some of the posts here starting to seem a bit salty! Joe has been developed during his time here. Finally delivered on his potential this year with good players around him. Imagine how tough it would be to progress with the team we had under Wellens! Good luck Joe on the new challenge whether its closer to home or better financials or even both. We move on. Next!
-
Not the biggest shock ever - player develops, player improves, player gets noticed, player moves on...
It will happen 100 times this year across the leagues...
-
Not a great loss, he’s had some good games of late but Tom in my opinion was a more valuable asset. Olowu was vulnerable.
Possibly the strangest thing I've ever read on the Internet. I need some fresh air.
-
We've certainly not missed him since he's been injured.
I'd say we've got better since he's been out.
Won't be hard to replace

A tad of fresh blood in the team won’t hurt ! Olowu was the player I was most impressed with last season, but in Grant we trust !Maybe a chance for young Faulkner to take his chance !
That’s six players out from last season, McCann will have to be even more astute in the market to keep any continuity of style of play , it took him two seasons to get back and it’s a competitive league .
“That’s six players out from last season”.
I assume that you are including the loan players in there mate.
Sadly that is what smaller clubs have to contend with every season now.
Loan players are the way forward it seems and for quite a few years now we have had to face a big rebuild after the loans go back and inevitably some of our better players move on.

They would if they read this forum.!!

How short is yours? He wasnt great a times over the last 2 years but he was learning and developing but he wasnt terrible! The team as a whole were though during his development years. Have a bit of respect! Lad always gave his best for the club. And yes based on last year he will be difficult to replace…. But replace him we will. You sound like an old boss of mine… whenever anyone left to further their career… they were ‘always shit anyway’

Off topic and not meaning to sound like a corny banking advert, but whatever you want out of life, money makes it more possible and less stressful.
His church will need money to set up and maintain, and to organise things to help the local community for example.
Joe is a great guy. Intelligent and kind hearted. I hope he has a great career after Rovers and proves the salty people on here wrong!

Merely saying that he won't be hard to replace, and like I said we looked better when he was out injured.
We certainly didn't miss him.
-
Good luck to him. Clearly a great guy and he really stepped up a gear in terms of performance in the last 14ish months. Absolutely faultless in the run-in the play-off season, and rarely put a foot wrong in the season just gone.
He always had great potential. In his first couple of seasons he'd probably admit himself that he made mistakes. That's what happens with inexperience. It's all clicked for him the more appearances he's got under his belt and he's fulfilling that potential.
I think some of the comments on here saying he's not a big loss are harsh to say the least. We definitely need to replace him with somebody mobile and good on the ball like he is.
I hope his next move is a real step up for him. The assumption is that he'll end up back down south, so maybe a top-end L1 or lower-mid Championship destination is lined up for him - somewhere like Watford, Millwall, Oxford, QPR, or maybe somebody like Luton or Charlton who will pay good salaries for this level I'm sure.
-
The reason why he will not be missed is the way Tom and Owen stood up to the mark so well in those last few weeks. We already have replacements for Jo and for Woody in the form of Faulkner and Williams, both of which are promising youngsters, along with jay we are well supplied with decent central defender cover. We are very fortunate.
-
I liked Woody's comments about Joe simplifying his game making him a better performer for the team.
He often seemed to be thinking too many steps ahead rather than the immediate danger. I think that was a function of youth and experience tells you when to play simple or take risks. Having Woody around probably helped Joe's decision making in the last two years.

That's a very fair assessment. He straightened out some of his errors and became a better all round defender and if he chooses wisely, the skies the limit for him. Surrounded by better quality players he has the potential to thrive and I'm sure he'll impress with his turn of pace which is a great assett defensively and offensively. I think he's got the same potential as Matt Mills who I thought should have got a look in at England U21 level, especially when you consider there were players of his age group getting recognised because they were playing for more fashionable clubs.
-
It'll be interesting to see where he ends up. Disappointing that he's decided to leave and would be even more so if it’s a sideways move.
-
The key for him will be if he continues to develop and he needs to. It was telling when we played some higher level teams in cups he struggled a bit with the movement and positioning of the opposition and his pace didn't help as much as it did in league 2.
He won't learn that without playing at a higher level and I hope he is successful just not against us.
It is still an opportunity to find someone better and it's fair to say we were fortunate that losing him to injury cost us nothing, we didn't lose after his injury did we?
-

He had Mateta in his pocket in the Palace cup game

To be fair, I thought that was more Anderson.?
-
To be fair, I thought that was more Anderson.?
More Olowu. That’s why they swapped shirts at the end of the game
-
Not a huge loss, one great season and 2 pretty/very poor. Didn’t want to pay Rovers back for the faith that was shown in him during those disastrous times we put up with him, and the development he was given, so poor from him.
Nice lad,etc etc.
but not overly bothered he’s off.
Last four games showed how much he was missed.
If you were working hundreds of miles away from family and someone offered you a job closer to home for let’s say £50-100k more per annum, what would you do?
No way Orient will pay them wages!
Pretty sure Orient aren’t skint. They could easily offer him a grand a week more than we have.
-

I could be wrong, perhaps. I’m sure Tom had a cracking game too though..

They lose about £3.5m per year, which is pretty much what Terry puts in annually. The current Orient owners have kept funding these losses with what amounts now to over £20m in loans to the club. We owe about £35m, presumably all to Terry given the Watson and Ryan loans were I think both written off.

I agree and disagree in the same breath. Money does make more things possible but unfortunately 99% of our society now are brought up in the mindset that a pay rise means they have access to more credit.....bigger house, bigger car, all on never never.
The point I was making is I don't get the feeling it's about money. I think it will be a move home to London or local to that where he can concentrate on his new venture. A move down there may very well come with more money but it doesn't mean its the motivator.
If he signed for a team local to us in the same division, then personally I would be disaapointed. If he signs down south I don't think it is money driven.
-
I wish him all the best for his future in football and his church,But we looked better defensively with bailey and Anderson at the back for the last 12 or so games than we did all season

I don’t think we/Club Doncaster owe as much as that to TB, I think it’s more like £10m. Think there was a fairly significant conversion of debt to equity a few years back.
-
You also have to ask yourself has he looked better simply because he was playing in a promotion chasing side. Id of been well happy had he stayed but I'd rather have a proven league one defender. Time and time we have lost players at the end of the contract and us the fans really wanted them to stay and bar one or two most go and end up doing nothing. Good luck and thanks for your service Jo.
-
If only he'd taken that call from Harrison Biggins.......
Thanks Joseph, and all the best for the future.
-
He looked very good this season. Positional play was spot on and rarely got beaten to a ball.
However, if he wanted to stay with us, he would have.
The offer was there.
I'd rather him leave and us have a player who wants it come in. They come and go.
-
Reading some of the comments on here he will be certain that he has made the correct decision to leave.
He a very good player and will be a big loss.
All the best Joe, not only are we losing a good player, but an immense character.

Not sure what some see, and why we can’t all agree he was, and is a great player.
He probably had the highest ceiling out of the team we had.
I would see league 1 as a side ways move career wise, but he was obviously struggling personally with finding a church and that may play a big part for Joe.
Yes there were times when he struggled on the pitch, but he didn’t have much quality around him, but his quality shone through when the team was performing better.

Thought we might have had a statement from Joseph by now
I was just thinking the same. Unless he's concerned he might get some backlash.
-
Think he’s probably still facing up to reality that he’s leaving us. When talking to him he went very quiet when the subject was mentioned, whilst he couldn’t confirm he was leaving it seemed like the decision had been very difficult for him, he came close to showing his emotions which would have given the game away.
Personally we said to him that if he was leaving, majority of fans would appreciate his time with us and whilst there would be huge disappointment, would treat him with respect.
His reaction was incredible and again not sure how he held things back, but he was lengthy in saying just how much he enjoyed his interactions with our fans.
Guessing he will give us insight to his decision once he has sorted out whichever club he joins, he’s that type of guy.
-
Was hoping he would stay.
Wish him all the best for his future in the game wherever that may be.
Have to say he ‘grew’ as a player especially this season.
Good luck Joseph Olowu. I shall remember you every time I wear your away shirt from this season.
-
He was the personification of our Family and Community ethos.
-
From the looks of his Instagram over the last few days Joe lead the worship last night at the church he has founded in Peckham.
This seems to be very important for him. I would be surprised if he didn't sign for a team with a locality that allowed him to continue attending his church.
I've said it for a while but IMO the move was about getting home and his new church. Not about money or level of football.
All the best to the lad.

I wonder if he's at Wembley watching the League One play off?

Can see him joining richie at leyton orient.

Players don’t often say their thanks to their previous club and it’s fans on social media until they’ve signed for the new club.
Also, I’m sure he’ll have more than one option on the table.

Number 4 is often worn by a defensive midfielder…but equally I wouldn’t read anything into it.

Steven Gérard wore number 4 for England

Tom's old shirt number.

Shame Olowu is leaving, I thought he was developing really well with us. I think another season or two would have done both parties good.

Thanks for this. I’ve always seen 5 and 6 as the CB’s and 4 as the CDM. I’m not sure how it originated that way, maybe an old English thing as the National team tend to stick with that, but more and more they call a deep lying midfield playmaker a 6 as often happens these days. Telling that McGrath has chosen that number.
-
Do shirt numbers ‘mean’ anything but to the supporters in this day & age?
Trent Alexander at shirt No.66 kind of made a statement at Liverpool. What number shirt would he ‘request’ at Real Madrid?
At International level of course you are allocated your ‘shirt squad number’.
At ‘our level’ we still have shirt numbers that are ‘ sacrosanct’ to Copps at #26 yet when Billy Sharp ‘came back’ to the club, he ‘settled’ for #14 because Sbarra had ‘claimed’ the #10 shirt, (sorry but you should have offered it back to Billy, imo Joe).
So, Joe Ironside is happy I presume with the No.20 shirt he has worn since the day he signed for the club & has no designs on claiming the present vacant No.9 shirt.
So clearly I’ve answered my own question, or have I?
No.26 is iconic to Copps & to the Rovers supporters who watched him develop & ‘grow into that shirt number’.
I can’t think of any shirt number in the Rovers history that ‘holds so much cudos’ to one player than that.
-
Billy Sharp says as a player ''you always want to be in those 1 to 11 numbers''.
He found wearing number 5 a bit odd, but not as strange as the number 27 they gave to him at LA Galaxy. He got his head around being given 14 because that was the age of one of his kids at the time.
So it clearly means something to Billy.
-
Personally really dissapointed about this.
Could understand him going down south to be near home and his church etc. To sign for them.
Guessing money and/or duration was the kicker maybe, signed for 3yrs we offered 2yr.
Dissappointed
-
1000% it will be money. But that's just the game we're in. All the players we've signed this season will be because we've offered better terms than other clubs. And Stockport will have offered him significantly more than we will have been able to. Hes had plenty of injuries and the pay bump will be enough to give him an extra bit of security, you imagine.
-

Why are you disappointed.?
He’d decided his time with us was up, he never said he was going down south. The disappointment, if there is any, is his leaving us.
It doesn’t matter where he’s gone.
-
Have a feeling he won’t be ‘welcomed’ back to the Eco the way Teddy & Rob Street will be, especially Teddy.
Both left the club & supporters with ‘a proper’ farewell.

Dissapointed is a feeling and emotion it isn't measurable or reasonable. Not saying he is wrong, or I am right.....just that I'm dissapointed! As many others are. Mainly I wanted him to resign. Would be easier to come to terms with if it was down south or championship. But to sign for a northern competitor.....yeah, I'm dissapointed.
-
He had such a strong bond with the fans but I guess he wanted a longer contract with a higher base salary.
I also guess that Grant has his pay structure and ceiling to keep the squad on an even keel.
Grant made two offers and both were rejected so he made his position clear - he wanted him to stay.
I am compromised on this one as a player has a short career so has to look out for himself but the three year contract he now has surely we could match, given his age and performance trajectory. We've done 3 years for other 'big' names.
He's staying in the north so it's not location.
It must have simply been wages, win bonuses, clean sheet bonuses etc and I guess they are significantly higher than we could get to.
I'm normally pretty chilled with departures but this one has hit home.
Bitterly disappointed if im honest.

I was passing the other day, so went in to see the white in the flesh & also see how the sizes were this year (medium is still a medium in that respect).
The idea was to wait on the release of the away kit & decide on that or the white keeper shirt, the white is currently going around in my washer, I love it & it's proper beer garden attire.

And another
-
Good luck to the lad, if he thinks that they offer him a better way forward for his career then so be it. He may have made a mistake, we will wait and see. It isn't as if he let us down on the field. We move on too, we have two or three cracking young centre halves who will become as good as Olowu, and another coming in loan/permanent from the PL. The test will be to see how far up this league Rovers will be in comparison, I suspect we will be challenging his club, our defence already looks well geared up to Lg.1.
-

I agree, when Joe was being criticised on this forum about his so called injury and the fact that he had not given a proper farewell to our fans, I supported him giving potential reasons for the delay in doing so.
How wrong could I have been!
I don’t take back that he is a lovely guy, always gave time to speak to us and always very polite and respectful. Our last conversation just before he announced he was leaving, was that if he was going it was likely the majority of our supporters would respect his decision.
Thus I am not sure what response he will get now, just hope any response will muted and we don’t get any nasty verbal abuse.

The reason TSL and Joe have put statements out is to try and make it understandable to the fans, to kill any ill feeling - especially as they have chosen teams in the same league over DRFC.
We are back in league one which given our current attending fan base is where we should be. These players have helped us do this, no flack should go their way.

Players come and go. It’s the nature of football. Both left in my eyes on a positive. Thanks for your time and effort. Good luck at your new clubs.

Why do some fans have to criticise or abuse players who’ve been loyal to a club and seen out their contract for taking an opportunity to advance their careers? If he’s been offered a chance at a potentially bigger club and higher wages as well why would he not take it?

There are always a few who will incite others to join in with any booing or abuse.
It happens, sadly

They've spent the last 15 years in National League and National League North, they're probably historically a similar size club, definitely not bigger than us. They may have some more ambition currently than us but not a bigger club.

Frankie how do make them out to a bigger club I suspect our attendances this season will be bigger than theirs. We can accommodate more away fans they average 1000 away fans in their ground last season. Their owners funded their rise from National league to League 1 so we will have to see what we do this season. By the way if promotion is to do with the size of the club you should have been out of league 1 by now. I appreciate you had financial problems and this season you appear to signing players to get you out of the league.

The only constant at any club is the fans. Not the chairman, the CEO, the manager, the staff, or the players.
Just the fans. That's how it is.

Stockport are losing around £7m a year financing their spending. That’s double the loss that we book.
