Years ago I worked for the then owner/chairman of Retford United FC, he wanted me to be the Secretary/Groundsman of them, “ I’m not doing it because I go to Doncaster every Saturday in the season “ .  I lost my job a few weeks later  !!

Just giving this a nudge. No mention of it on Rovers website and not a great deal of info anywhere really. With the first team away in Spain at the moment, does anyone know when they return? Back in time for this game on Friday? Or is it likely to be a Rovers youth team fixture?

Thanks Paul, I thought that would be the case when I saw the first team going to Spain at the weekend. Shame really, my little lad who plays for Retford United u8's was looking forward to seeing them visit Cannon Park.

Is anyone, maybe Paul, able to explain how and why Retford FC was formed and is there any ill feeling between the now 2 clubs in the town?

Paul will probably have a better recall of this than me but I'll offer a summary. Retford FC are actually celebrating 10 years since formation going into the new season. I think they were formed from an amalgamation of sorts between the old Ordsall Rangers junior football club and the adult club Babworth Road Sports and Social Club. I believe the main intention was to develop a local club that provided a pathway for local players into the non-league level. There was a perception at the time that Retford United weren't always promoting local players. As such, FC have grown and now play at the same level as United, last season both were moved into the United Counties league from the Yorkshire version (forget the name).

I think there is a bit of needle between the two, depending on who you talk to. It's worth pointing out that Retford United and Retord United Juniors are two separate entities, just sharing the name and badge, whereas FC is all one club.

As I said, I might be a bit wide of the truth with some of that, so maybe others like Paul might be able to correct me.

I think the thing about Retford United not having many local players in stems from the owner/chairman from over 20 years ago and the money he was paying players, it was ludicrous to say the least.

I could be wrong, but I understand there's only one Retford lad in the FC senior team at the moment anyway.

I went to the retro ghetto derby last boxing day.
Lots of endeavour, but bloody awful game of actual football.

That sounds fairly accurate. My lad plays for Retford United under 13s and the senior club don’t support the juniors in the way Retford FC do

The young teenage ultras enjoy the rivalry though
