Title: Segregation
Post by: Move DRFC on August 21, 2025, 12:02:13 pm
I noticed on Tuesday at Huddersfield, and it's even clearer on the pictures, that there was very minimal segregation between the fans (how it should be!). It got me thinking, as when we have had big games with near sell-out crowds at the Eco in recent times, we seem to go wayyy over the top with segregation, often covering hundreds of seats with the netting despite the fact we have huge metal fences installed.

I know it's not common, but if we can mount a challenge up the table and have a few of these types of crowds at home this season, surely we have to rethink this to try to increase the crowd where possible.

Probably due to policing costs with less segregation.?

Safety Officers can be proper fun hoovers.

We don't have huge fences and I hope we never do. They didn't stop Millwall fans piling over all those years ago.

There's no point squeezing fans together when, we simply don't have to. When demand is such, then the club have and will balance things out considering cost, safety and logistics. I think the club are better placed, and more experienced than we are in maximising revenue considering additional costs for stewarding and policing.

If only football fans behaved so no segregation was required at all eh!?

Not one Millwall entered our stand. There was many Rovers willing to stand toe to toe.  A few of their fans got pepper strayed.

The many young lads who egged on
Millwall soon ran away though.

The invisible fence stopped them when they realised no one was running

Exactly this, bouncing on their toes being held back by absolutely nothing.

Rovers fans stood there goading and laughing at them.

I was right at the side of their fans at Huddersfield. Generally they were no bother and neither were Rovers fans. However I bet it's interesting say if Leeds visited.

I was too, row E. What I found strange was the young uns there, choosing that area to goad the away fans, rather than up the other end, where their team attack in the second half.
When they scored the first, the first thing some of the young uns did was get their phones out to video us, not even looking towards the pitch & celebrating, weirdos.

If it can work in the premier league why not here?

Liverpool have approx. 2 or 3 vertical rows of seats sheeted off between home and away fans in the Anfield Rd end of the ground. You never see or hear of any bother and they have minimal stewards/police between the segregation. When you compare it with what we do you would think the away fans are alien creatures from out of space. Way over the top.

I've already tried to explain the reasons above. The vast majority of times, we don't need to have opposing fans close together. When the demand is there, the segregation will obviously reduce to a point the club with SAG will decide what's logistically possible and most cost effective. Maybe a factor on cost is our average income per seat is probably around £10 if that. The Prem is probably much more plus all the other income they get without even kicking a ball.

The club obviously regularly review all this stuff and we'll see shortly whether demand gets close to capacity. Generally keeping costs down helps us benefit from affordable ticket prices.
