I always feel that we should score more goals from corner kicks and was delighted to see the first goal last night scored from a corner. Up until then I thought our corners were predictable and easy to defend. I think we could be a bit more adventurous/imaginative with our corners and got very frustrated at the repeated floater into the goalkeepers hands.
I looked at a few stats on t'interweb and was surprised to see how low the ratio of goals to corners is!
I know the stats are limited to the premiership teams last season but only 4.2% of corners resulted in a goal. This makes our 1 from 12 last night look good at 8.3%.
Arsenal always look dangerous from corners and seem to have a variety of options, and they have the advantage of technically better players.
Not sure what our overall success rate is from corners but I think we can improve our conversion rate with a bit more variety?

I seem to remember we had good success from corners under Penney. McIndoe and Green had a very nifty little corner routine to get in behind and whip a low ball into a packed box that worked quite a few times.
-
Much more recent than that with David Cotterill and Rob Jones.
Love to see a well worked out corner routine come off, does my head in someone taking the corners lift one hand in the air that seems to signal very little and then proceed to send the ball nowhere in particular.

The best and most consistent performance was by Gary Kelly, playing against us for Reading. He had power and accuracy on every corner and free kick that he took that night. It was no surprise when Dave Kitson finally equalised from one of the corners.

Wasn't it Ian Harte?

I might be wrong here, but wasnt that Ian Harte? Either way i recall every time Reading got a corner there was a groan from the stands. Pin point accuracy.

After reading the first post on this thread Greeny and McIndoe's routine instantly came to mind!

It was and everyone of them right under the bar, nightmare for a keeper

I’ve not rubbed my hands together in anticipation for a goal from a corner since the Rob Jones-McCombe days.
-
Andy hinchcliffe could take an unbelievable corner

Dave Kitson never played , it was Alex Pearce who scored for Reading assist by Ian Harte. :)

I know we scored from an out swinger last night but in swingers are a better value option. It was proven long ago you have more chance of creating good chances from in swingers. Look at Arsenal, the best corner scoring team of all time, in swingers all the way.

It was Ian Harte. Gary Kelly used to play the opposite full back position for Leeds but as far as I know didn’t play for Reading, although he is Harte’s uncle!

Well yeah but they have players like Rice and Saka who have the quality to drop it right under the crossbar at the back post 9 times out of 10. Most of the time I've seen us try something similar it end up as an easy catch for the keeper. At this level you've got to mix it up and keep the opposition guessing.

Don’t necessarily agree. Think you do the thing that gives you best chance over and over again.

Not if those in swingers end up being over hit to the back post & out for a goal kick or into the keepers hands as most of ours seem to do.
The short corners we seemed to use as ‘option one’ last season faired no better.
If you don’t have a big target man to aim for who can unsettle defenders & keeper alike, then you’re looking to lay the ball off to someone who can strike it with power & accuracy on a regular basis i.e., 8 out of 10 shots on target.
We have neither.

Don't think anyone has the latter...
Shots on Target Percentage — 2024/25 PL (FotMob)
Erling Haaland: ~55.6% shots on target
Mohamed Salah: ~46.9%
Jhon Durán: ~48.4%
Rodrigo Muniz: ~48.7%
Julio Enciso: ~42.3%

Speaking of corner kicks, i dont think Ajayi should be anywhere near taking them, he either hit it too short or too long last night.
-
Obviously Bailey's our best corner taker.

Sorry, yes it was Ian Harte and I got the scorer wrong as well. Rushing to post before the gym this morning. No good at multi tasking and my memory isn’t quite what it was. A brilliant display that night though.

We took very few short corners last season. Same this season. Our attacking set pieces are poorly thought out imo. Defensively on set pieces I think we look well organised.

I remember that well . Worked a treat many times.

In Middleton we have the ability to set up good high or low crosses from corners, all we have to do is organise the forward line to make the most of them.
-
We had 12 corners last night and wasted one after the other with Ajayi floating them harmlessly into the welcoming arms of the Accy keeper.
Only when Middleton replaced Ajayi did we make a corner count.
