Title: Not a game to
Post by: Thorney on September 13, 2025, 04:54:22 pm
Not a game to lose our heads (fans) over.
Not 1 player today platlyed good enough.

Not a game where players should be dropped because of either. Including TLT, he is still our No1 and best keeper and dropping him wouldnt do any good.

Its a game that every team and player has.

Agree regarding nothing to lose our heads over however , as mentioned in the Lucky Pint :

I would drop TLT, he needs to be shown that he needs to sharpen his act up, he is showboating at times, diving for balls he can just stand still for and has cost us the last 3-4 goals, their last goal today I can concede was a good strike, but all I was with and the tv comms team think he should’ve done better.

They were better than us all over and Matt Smith (ex rover loanee) played with slippers and a pipe all game without challenge, not how Grant usually  wants his teams to play.
Goals change games, and that penalty that was a stone-waller on Molly just prior to their goal was that chance. The ref was right in front of it too?  Bonkers

Well below par today. Disastrous first 15 minutes left us a mountain to climb and to be honest we never looked like hurting them. Stonewall penalty turned down for us before they scored but not sure that would have changed the outcome. It just didn't click today but hey we move on to the next one. At least that kitson Mullin didn’t manage one. Anyone else a bit worried about Timmy's early performances? Looked a bit shaky at times today but also made some great stops. Put this one down as a one-off and move on to the next one.  :rtid:

Awful performance against a very good team. Regroup for next week.

Not worried one bit about TLT.

Dropping TLT would be poor man-managment.
Grant thinks highly of Timmy and if he has concerns im sure he will pull him to 1 side and have a word, not drop him and make an example of him

Our first big defeat really. Nothing to get too caught up about and might do us some good long term. There’s some good teams in this league and it’s tough every week. Hopefully we learn from it and move on. Still a great start to the season.

Grant thinks highly of Hanlan too…

This is a club that now has a very good squad, it’s your shirt when playing well, last week and this were not TLT’s best. Im not concerned about him, but there is an air of overconfidence about him that maybe needs retuning.

Yet again Sharp was the best player on the pitch for us today.

We miss Sterry a lot going forward.

Poor performance, it happens. Penalty decision early on may have led to a different game and result. They were good...we weren't. We move on. TLT cost us today for sure but he'll win or keep us many a game too.

Also TSL would have got some right hammering after that today. He's got to stop this obsession with punching easy catchable balls asap. Feels like some of it is all for show

Just heard Grants reactions and fair play, he’s not digging people out in public, but focused on the whole team.
It just not how Grants team play at all, so odd.

I also worry/didnt like when Grant started mentioning watching Sheff U and how he would stop the attacker coming in. Please Grant do not be courting them (overly paranoid I know!) but we know some of their fans want him, and it is probably a job coming up very soon.

Pleased to see you said the Pen may have changed the game

Others above seem to say it cost us taking the lead   but once given it still has to be scored.

I think it was a blatant Pen and the Ref bottled it as "too early to give" because he was near enough to see it clearly

TLT hasn't been great last couple of games but he's been quality the rest of the season, hopefully today makes him more alert moving forward. He's still 5th in save percentage numbers so doing alright.

It’s a tough one because TLT made some cracking saves v Rotherham but was at fault v Bradford and arguably for the first 2 goals today but to be honest, the defending all round in that first half was well off. Does dropping him remind him nobody is guaranteed or shatter his confidence?

I said this on Lucky Pint:
“His longest experience at league level was probably with us in the loan spell which took us to the play-offs. He won’t have played more than the odd game for Hull, so pressure and relatively large crowds against League 1 teams will be new to him. He seems almost hyper-active for a goalkeeper and perhaps he needs to be more deliberate. TSL used to work in slo-mo when gathering the ball whereas TLT treats the ball like a hot potato”

I don’t think he should be dropped, but instead of allowing him to be completely self-indulgent in his role, he needs to be more conventional. And he must improve his catching.

We’re treating Timmy with kid gloves, but the reality is he’s made a couple of big big mistakes, and looks twitchy. He’s got a huge part to play this season, but he’s a lad here on loan, and we’ve got our own keeper on the bench who hasn’t put a foot wrong this season, and who I think deserves a chance and give Timmy a bit of time to settle and recover. Lawlor must be wondering what he needs to do to get a game, after his Boro performance in particular he deserves a start if Timmy is out of form.

Latutula is a good keeper but we let him down by not defending properly and too deep . But every player forgot their lines today and it showed and Wigan did what every home side would do , take full advantage of the chances we gave them .

We all learn by our mistakes, hopefully he will have those moments in his Jotter, never to be repeated.

I could well be wrong but our loan goalkeepers come and are catching balls is catching being coached out of them in favour of punching. I just get the impression some balls are easier to catch as opposed to punch out

Not been or seen the game today as it’s been my little ens birthday. But sounds like 2 big errors in the first 25 have cost us the points. Those errors don’t happen and maybe we play ourselves into the game? Probably only poor off the back of that 15.

Let's see how TLT performs in the next 2 league games, and how Lawlor performs at Spurs.

The keeper's jersey should go to whoever's in form.

100% agree with this, TLT’s mistake against Bradford was a shocker and could have cost us, today he did, I think in previous games he made some good saves at port vale etc but after today I’d give lawlor a chance, especially after his brilliant performance vs boro. I think we’ve been lucky not to concede more from TLT’s errors when he’s misjudged coming off his line.

I'm not sure the first goal was a "big big mistake". It looked like it was deflected from a player close to the goal and it wasn't possible for him to react to that.  If it was a deflection then I don't think he's at fault.

The first goal it got a flick off a player less than a yard away, a player who had got inbetween our two CBs. Poor defending not goalkeeping error.

The second he got a punch on a cross in a crowded area, no way he should be catching that IMO. Then it dropped to a Wigan player who wasn't closed down and shot through a crowded box. Not a keeping error. If this was Moly or Middleton we would be raving about how they stayed composed and took the goal superbly - not say we were lucky because of keeper.

The third, their player had acres of space and how easy was it for him to come inside and get a good shot away. Again look at how teams defend this exact thing against us when we have Moly cutting in. TLT was scrambling a bit on that one and nearly got there but you can't take away from the play and finish from the lad. Again if this was Moly or Middleton we would be shouting from the roof tops, not saying it was lucky.

None of them were errors.

Heads up guys - we are going to lose a number of games this season......there doesn't always need to be someone to blame, the better team just won that's all.

Agree with most of your points.

Only thing I'd say is that the 2nd goal comes from his mistake. Not too fussed that he punched the ball but once he decided to do that he needed to get it clear. Knocking it out for a corner was the best choice. Then reset and deal with that situation.

But that is no more an error than a shot that is off target or a pass that doesn't make its intended recipient.

If he had come for the cross and missed it which led to a goal, I'd call that an error.

Not to say I'm right though, just an opinion.

It wasn’t TLT’s fault that we didn’t score any goals and that we couldn’t fathom a way round Wigan’s press. There were errors, no doubt, but they were spread throughout the team.

Even Grant got the Clifton substitution wrong - putting Gibson in his place. He then had to correct it by bringing Crew on, eventually.
