Hanlan, olasagne, Ajayi, just awful.
Crew, ability yes, attitude no.
Also, criminal to let ironside leave

Completely agree some poor signings, Billy tries his hardest need a big man up front Adelakun could still do a job for us !!

We have Gibson and Middleton on the side Adelakun played, why would we need him?
-
He is big powerful and direct and can score
-
Give them all chance man, 3 of those haven't played alot of minutes and today got very few to make a difference. I thought Mccann would have done it around 60 mins as we were totally losing midfield Sbarra was nowhere in the game we almost played with 10 men.
-
I am afraid I have to reluctantly agree with the title of this thread.
-
Now that Copps is part of the coaching team, is he still head of recruitment?
Whether it's him or someone else, it's bloody awful at identifying attacking talent.

Lee Glover is head of recruitment.

Good recruitment in defence and midfield but in attack other than Middleton we’ve not signed a player really up to the standard

We've also missed out in midfield, we/ve been crying out for that player who's better than Clifton who we don't have in the side!
Many on here deride him but a Clifton type player is being missed massively!
-
Dead easy to take a cheap shot and blame recruitment rather that looking at the reasons our performance levels have dropped. Most of our players are capable of better. It's easier to have a go at the newer players when they've had bits and Bob's of game time, rather than our prime experienced striker who misses a sitter for example. Although it seems some still claim Olusanyas sharp chance at Spurs was a sitter. Really?
It's not the recruitment that's killing us IMO.
-
It’s not helping us, DBR, particularly with the attacking options. Defensively ok but we still lack a ‘killer’ attacking midfielder (S’Barra is way out of his depth) and where has Gotts gone all of a sudden?
Olosanya, Ajeyi, Hanlan and S’Barra all look to be well below the standard required, imho.
-
You have hit the nail on the head there but some say not given time

It can only be the budget , finding a quality striker seems our Achilles heel , we’ve had useful and effective loans over last couple of years but it’s not filling the gap permanently. Surely there must be targets they’re eyeing up as it is costing us every year !!

Said the same. Cliftonville has his detractors but his energy is being missed.

Adelakun would be a waste now, his biggest mistake is having his brother as his agent.
Why not go for Steve Fletcher ex Stoke,Sheff Wed, Hibs, etc, he might be only able to play 30-45 minutes but he would be more effective than Millie Vanille when they come on.

He’d want 10 grand a week probably.

He’s also retired as of this week.

I think recruitment is decent, just a large squad which has been utilised, is seeing less time for some to play minutes. Hanlon is coming on now, US guy never played for ages so will come on with minutes. You can't just keep on saying they are all scrap then when they come through say oh they are OK them.
None if them are bad players. Remember in human beings there will be confidence, form, match fitness and lots more, they are more than likely the problem.

I think we should give Hanlan a run of starts he can offer more pace and physicality than Sharp.
-
Hanlan looks like Joe Ironside without the finesse.

More mobile though.
Olusanya just doesn’t have the tools to play centre forward on his own so BH has to be given a go.

Can't believe that Ajayi's on Tottenham's books. What was it Tommy Docherty used to say "He's deceptive, must slower than he looks and couldn't trap a bag of wet cement." Olusanya's no better, just a headless chicken who runs down blind alleys. Both nice lads no doubt and trying their best but our lack of goals and general attacking threat is costing us dearly. Our goal difference is already in the minus. Hanlan is never going to be prolific so we're stuck with what we've got until January. Does anybody know of a younger version of Miller, Kitchen and O'Callaghan we can pick up?, or better still Coleman, Jeffrey and Sheffield. Terrifying forward lines in their day but we desperately need a similar attacking force or we will just tread water. Not panic stations yet but our lack of firepower will surely cost us come the end of the season. :rtid:

Not just on their books.
But in and around the 1st team!!

He looked lively when he first signed. We’ve made him worse.

Significant mood shift in less than a couple of months. There was also plenty of hyperbole in pre-season. It’s up to McCann to try and recapture some of that early promise.
-
Plenty of good signings this summer,
If you’re saying you woukdnt of been happy sat in 10th place after 11 games then you’re lying!
It’s been a good start to the season
-
Yet his single goal for Tranmere this season says differently....
-
Ajayi rang rings around Boro in the cup in probabythe only game of note he's started. Certainly a player in there. 8 minute cameos in various positions are no good to assess him on.
Grehan and O'Riordan look very good signings.
We know Crew is a good player, just Close is playing better than him.
The keeper I always thought this is what we were getting anyway.
Middleton is fine from what I've seen and is an alternate option, but no better than Gibson or Molyneux.

I agree with this. Disappointed with yesterday because that was 3 points in the bag if we managed it properly. But thats all it is. Concerned at only 2 things. 1) individual mistakes are killing us right now. I'm sure Grant has pointed this out to the lads. Concentration needs to be for 90+ minutes. And 2) get those shots on target. Make the opposition keeper work. A foot past the post or over the bar because we are going for a corner or top bins isn't quite what we need right now.
The excellent start has driven expectations. If we go into the final month of the season 2 points off the playoffs like we are now I'll be delighted.

Exactly, I was saying the same thing on here last night.
If we are similarly placed at the turn of the year I would fancy our chances of making the play offs again.
-
1 point from 12 is a concern, just hope it doesn't carry on in similar form.

I have seen nobody moaning about the league position.
People are concerned about the form and what they are seeing on the pitch.

The strength in McCann and the board is that we’ll be about mid table in January but they will see where the gaps are and plug them. It’s happened in the last 2 seasons. If we are mid table in January we can still have an exciting end to the season.

It’s great that there’s a willingness to do that and the players we’ve brought in the last 2 Januarys have had big impacts but generally it’s seen as a harder time to recruit. There’s no guarantee that we’ll bring players in who will improve the team, certainly not to the same extent we’ve seen the last couple of years.
-
Probably a few decisions to be made in January given huge size of the squad and the need to do something significant in terms of a #9:
It is either Westbrooke or Crew. Pointless having one of them consistently not making the matchday squad.
Do we keep Ajayi for the second half of the season?
Likewise Olusanya.
Those would be the three likely exits.
You could lose three players there and bring in a more suitable #9. God knows what that looks like though given the wide variety of players McCann has shoved in there. Hanlan can then be either a wider player or a third back up #9.
-
Would also say we have some insurance if O’Riordan gets recalled due to his very good performances, with Faulkner now clearly ready to come into the squad.

I'm sure they'll do the same if we are in a relegation battle too.

Apparently so and Harrogate on Telly Monday I think , so we can see for ourselves
-
We bought them, play them. Hanlan and Olusanya need to start a few league games. Coming on after 75 mins is not helping there cause. Unfair to judge players who are not given the oppertunity.

Not helping their cause, but definitely helping our cause, because we only have to suffer them for 15 minutes.
-
I think it’s clear for all to see we need another number 9. Probably in the mould of ironside but a bit more mobile. From what we’ve seen from Olusanya, he doesn’t look like the answer unfortunately.

Rovers’ first team fixtures are too important to use as a test-bed for short-term recruits like Olusanya; he was brought in, not for development, but for impact and with 2 months or so to go he seems a poor choice. Originally match fitness was the excuse. Surely most of the observers on here have been watching players for long enough to recognise ability and you wonder what McCann sees that is not visible to most of us.
If there is something there that we have not witnessed it is for the coaching staff to nurture it without weakening the team and potentially dropping points. McCann’s success rate with choosing strikers seems rather on the wrong side of average. Sadly this man seems to have been a total waste of money.
-
We do seem to kick on in the new year under GM but would rather not be relying on it for safety.
Normally we make a few good signings but actually land on a settled team later in the season. We can’t control the signings till Jan but maybe a settled team would help.
-
You need to earn your right to a place in the starting 11 and on the bench. Some players have not delivered. If you get 20 mins make an impact, show the manager you deserve more playing time.
Close is a prime point in case. He’s bided his time and has done well and he’s got more minutes as a result.
Like a few others I’m starting to question the ability of a few of our additions.

But the table identifies that being worried is an overreaction. If we’re 10th then it’s not as bad as being made out is it.
