Title: Swansea 18/10/75
Post by: Draytonian III on October 15, 2025, 03:11:35 pm
We won 2-1, Kitchen and O Callaghan scored, which they often did back then, it might not be a pivotal moment in a lot your lives, but it was in mine. It was the first time I had ever been to a Doncaster Rovers Football Club match. I was hooked.
The last 50 years haven’t exactly flown by, but Doncaster Rovers Football Club have cost me thousands of pounds, 2 jobs, 3 women, but I wouldn’t have it other way and yes I’ll be there on Saturday talking the usual bollox to the same people I travel with and sit close by too.
Once you find “ your” team that’s it especially if like us it’s a team lower down the ladder because you have more connection to a Doncaster Rovers,Lincoln City, Rochdale etc than say a Tottenham,Liverpool, Man Utd.
There’s been plenty upheaval and shitte times of which we all know but the good times totally outweigh the bad times.
Ps.I did find other jobs and other women, but still only 1 team.

Well done on your half century! A great achievement. I’m hoping to reach mine next August.

I know lots of people who have changed jobs and women but genuinely, I don’t know anyone who has changed their football team allegiance.

At least with football you can get away with having an occasional second or third club dalliance away from the original one.!

If you watch other teams play you don’t have buy scarfs, hats, programmes etc and it’s mainly “away” games

This was my second game Draytonian, I had been once previously around 1973 but this fixture against Swansea was the point at which I became hooked.

Game number five was exactly fifty years ago this evening, Tuesday 11th November 1975 when Rovers hosted Hull City in the fourth round of the league cup. I remember this fixture so vividly, the ground was shrouded in fog and the floodlights walking up to the ground were not visible until  entering the car park. Rovers won 2-1 on the night in front of over a 20000. What I didn’t know at the time was this was likely to be the highest home attendance I would ever stand with unless of course significant changes are ever made to the Eco Power.

Going back to the Swansea fixture the goal scorer for Swansea that day was a very young Tommy Tynan who was on loan at the Swans from Liverpool. Relatively unknown at the time he was a player who would become a prolific goal scorer wherever he went, that was of course until he eventually joined us!
