Title: Patrick Kelly
Post by: mushRTID on November 09, 2025, 12:18:30 am
Best player on the pitch by an absolute mile.
Iv said before on here I’m disappointed we didn’t get him, he was the type of player to snap up and develop.
Hes going to be some player.
He’d walk into our pedestrian midfield. Just what we are missing.

But at the end of last seaskn if you had a choice of him or charlie crew, who would you have picked?

Charlie was outstanding towards the end, PK was injured when we went on our end of season run.

Honestly I’d pick Kelly all day long.
The way he commits players and his direct style. I think we are missing this.

Crew is neat and tidy but would anybody seriously pick Crew over Kelly? I’d be very surprised.

Kelly to be honest

Id go with crew.

Dont remember too many games where i felt kelly was outstanding, but crew during the run in was brilliant. f**k knows what happened this season

He showed some promise, but I don't recall him being particularly good for us. He only started a handful of games in the second half of last season.

Based on yesterday Kelly. One is thriving in that Barnsley team. Crew is about 6th choice for us and never used at all now

It wasn't a choice between them two, it was a choice of Westbrooke and Close who contributed zero to a set of  league winners or Kelly.
We couldn't get rid of two expensive midfielders therefore...
However,  Close was supposed to be more suited to league 1...

I didn’t think he did that much other than not get fouled when 99% of pros would have just fouled him.

48 was the best player on the pitch by a big margin imo followed by Moly.

Part of my point with this is about snapping up young talent when they become available. Especially when we’ve had them on loan and in my opinion (and obviously Barnsley’s) they’d shown a lot of promise.

It wasn’t meant to be a Kelly v Crew issue. But if it was then the options were Kelly permanent or Crew loan.

He got their MOTM by the way but agree 48 was very good too.

I just feel we’ve let a good one slip away if we didn’t go for him.

I don’t recall much if any outcry when we didn’t sign him in the summer. He was OK for us last year and showed some promise but was very inconsistent (to be expected for a young player). It didn’t really feel like one that got away.

Plus maybe we were in for him? You could see why he would have chosen Barnsley over us anyway.

The latest accounts for Barnsley reflecting 2023/24 in League One show a wage bill of over £11m. Their gates this season are 25% higher than ours. They've got significantly more financial firepower than we have.

The thing is, for their second goal, Kelly was allowed to run with the ball for about half a pitch, unchallenged by any Rovers player. Had he been playing for us, he would almost certainly have been challenged by a Barnsley player.

In conclusion, maybe we made him look better than he actually is.

This

He should have been taken down, just like they did to our players multiple times

I think it helped him that the Barnsley midfield had multiple ball players who offered control around him. Which I think he needs to compliment him.

The likes of Clifton and Bailey for example have their strengths but aren’t that.

He didnt stand out for me, he was ok. If anything we probably made him look good. Like others have said we should have took him out before he made that pass. We're too 'nice'

I thought Kelly looked good yesterday, he’s definitely kicked on - I preferred him in that more advanced role and he was more physical than I remember. I didn’t rate him much when he was here, I thought he was a liability that would lose the ball, but he’s kicked on.

We’ve been hoodwinked by the four good games Crew had last season. Got to try and clear the dead wood out in January and get some quality in.

I rated him for us and I said on more than on one occasion that he was underused for us a bit like Middleton is this season. Kelly did have some off games, but he always had that ability to carry the ball and drive forward. We don’t have anyone who can do that, right now.

Incidentally I don’t know if it’s just me but I also thought kelly had bulked out somewhat. Looked a lot stronger. Grant admitted in his press conference after that he should have been brought down rather than be allowed to play Keillor - Dunn in.

His driving run from midfield was exceptional. He did it in glimpses for us. I agree he looked a bigger and stronger player.

Those driving runs forward do make a difference even when the central defenders drive beyond the midfield.

I really thought Crew would come in and control games for us but not so far.

I would have looked to get him on a permanent if I was Grant. He did play well yesterday but maybe he just wanted to show us what we are missing, he may not play that well every week so its difficult to say if he would have been a good signing or not.

I think you are right Bessie, that is how he was with us, one game a world beater, the next every bit an under 21 player, BUT the signs were there that once he got it together he would be a player.

I would maybe argue a player who could have a higher ceiling than any midfielder we currently have?

Which makes it odd we were not in for him ( I don’t really know if we were or were not, but PK said we didn’t want him!)

Either way he was good for them.

First thing i said to my son was it looks like Kelly has hit the gym. Much beefier than last season.

I said all of that to my mate at the game on Saturday.

Haha, my bad, it should have said “to my mate”.
Now amended.

Kelly and Crew are two different midfield players
Crew plays when selected for us and Wales U21 in a more defensive position in midfield. He doesn’t play just behind the striker. Kelly on Saturday played in the advanced role similar to Clifton played for us. Which appears to be his best position.

Signs were there when he played for us. Yes he wasn't anyones starter last year but you could see stuff he could do that none of our midfield can and now he's learnt to get his head up more and seems to be cleverer on the pitch he's becoming a very good player. He'll play higher than any of our current midfield for sure including Crew.

Yes I noted that Filo during the warm up, he obviously worked hard over the summer. I thought he was the best player on the pitch, so strong and didn’t put a put a foot wrong all game.
Not sure what Barnsley paid for him, but if he continues to play like that and develops over the season, they could be in for a little windfall.
His performance may help us a little with Charlie, hopefully watching that, he will see where he really needs to be with his own performances, I still believe he has the ability to improve to the level of performance shown by PK.

Spot on BB. Where was Billy for the first goal, attempting to do what our midfield should have done. I wish we had a few more with Billy’s attitude.
