First up the game against Bradford City to decide who gets a home tie or away tie as both sides have already qualified for the knock out stages.
As always we can expect changes even loan players of certain ages not cup tied can play so we might see Flint again and expect McGrath and Lawlor and other fringe players to probably get some game time.
Never the less that in itself creates interest especially when we are on the run of form we are currently on and hopefully Sterry will prove his fitness who looks to have improved his standing and importance to the team by not playing games lately, so lots of interest the fact whether we have a home tie or away probably of less importance to us than to other sides the way recent results have gone as we can lose anywhere. at the moment.
But it would be nice to have a glimpse of hope and get a result Tuesday and repeat the turn around in form we started with a win at Bradford a couple of years ago resulting in us getting in the playoffs, hopefully history repeats it's self.
Onto the much more important game at Lincoln City who are sitting in 6th place in the table and have only lost one game at home but lately in their last three games have lost two and drawn one, so we again will be trying to not do what we are famous for and get teams back on track after a sticky period.
That could well prove difficult as our old loan player Street knows he can out pace any of our defenders in a foot race. Earlier in the season I watched them play Harrogate in a cup game, the one chink of light was apart from Street, they didn't look all that, functional but not that dominant and could be played through and turned at the back.
On that showing they are certainly not a team that we cannot compete with, like most teams in this league more clinical when they get a chance, but at our best no better, That's the hard part us playing well as a team.
With the game Tuesday all the players could well advance their chances of forcing themselves into the reckoning for a start, although we played ok yesterday we need to find that more clinical approach in both defensive and attacking moments that change a game, and a little bit of luck wouldn't be out of place, especially with officials.
Lots to mull over, two games that with the following FA cup game the week after could form the season in front of us, so a lot at stake for the club and our supporters.
What do you think? all games against local clubs we have a lot of history with, the first two Bradford and Lincoln no pressure on the Bradford game but quite a bit on Lincoln game to try and arrest our fall down the league table. The Chesterfield match can we carry the cup run to after Christmas and importantly keep supporter interest and a promise of riches in a big game.
Probably the most important part of this season, carry on with the poor run of results and it could get a lot more messy, me I think we can muddle through if the players play to their potential more often and get some confidence.
I will say the last thing we want to do is panic leave it to this management team, they are best placed to see it through and have time to plan and know the limits of our squad.
What do you think? from where I am sitting I think some problems are closer to being solved than splashing out and panicking as we have a couple of young players already on the books better than some others think, and full of ambition, lot's to discuss lot's to look forward to in the next couple of weeks, and the players need to grasp the nettle, what do you think, Please have your say

Hi anybody know if the game will be televised unfortunately I am in Norwich that day and night ?

Both games will be on Sky Sports+.

You're a fair bit out with your dates, Brian. The FA Cup game at Chessie isn't until Dec 6th. We've to play Stevenage and Peterborough before then.
-
Not sure who is available but would like to see Gotts and Hanlsn start. I’d still pick a fairly strong team as we need a win so would go with below. Bailey subbed for Sbarra or Clifton at half time depending how the game is going.
Lawlor
Nixon Pearson McGarth Senior
Bailey Flint Gotts
Gibson Hanlan Middleton
-
I’d play the senior men that need minutes but keep the rest at home. Don’t consider anyone that will start on Saturday or started last Saturday. Play the kids.

Don’t you have to have so many players from the last matchday in the squad?
-
Sterry might start, not sure what has happened to Maxwell?
-

I think it's a minimum of 4 outfield player's that started the last league game.
-
Sedwards, I would go with that team but have Close in for Bailey, at the moment he is too important to risk, the same with Grehan for Pearson, and with McGrath it gives them some much needed game time, and we need other teams to watch such players to get out on loan in the next window if anyone wants them and can be judged in meaningful games by ourselves as well to see if they show any form.
-
Looks like Andy Cook will be starting for Bradford. I’m not sure if someone like Grehan could deal with him physically and aerially.
Cook came off the bench and appeared to do well on Saturday. And they’ve been struggling of late.
-
ncRover he will do well to get anywhere near Cook as he’s playing for U21s Ireland
-
McGrath and O'Riordan I think.
-
4 young loan players could be in squad tonight
Flint could start with McGrath
No Maxwell hip flexor
No Grehan and Crew on international duty
Sterry may get a chance
It depend how strong Bradford side is we just might be over powered
Our reserves squad could be tested tonight
-
Reserves/young lads!
-
I thought tonight would have been an opportunity to experiment, maybe 2 up top but it doesn't look like it. No Olusanya in squad.
-
They have a stronger side can’t see anything but a defeat
No young players in their squad they’ve come to win and win well
-
What's the team?
-
They have a stronger side can’t see anything but a defeat
No young players in their squad they’ve come to win and win well
Ten changes from their last league game.
-
What's the team?
Lawlor, McGrath, Senior, Sterry, Flint, Straughan-Brown, Close, Gotts, Ajayi, Middleton, Hanlan
Right decision to get some game time in to the legs. No Olusanya even on the bench which is strange as I'd have given him a start ahead of Ajayi.
-
Is Sbarra injured? Personally don’t think he’s good enough but surprised that he can’t even make the squad tonight.
-
Poor decision making from Middleton. Caught them on the break. If he cut right in the front of the defender and central on the edge of the box. Instead he goes out left and reduces any chance of a shot
Bradford look the better team
-
Well we are hanging on we don’t yet have a midfield to get us forward. But the forwards are not much better. At the moment apart from Sterry it’s showing our back up players are not as good as we all thought
-
One sided game at the moment all Bradford but let’s hope.
-
Our team are nowhere near strong enough or clever enough to get anything from this game.
-
0-1 Bradford well worth it, Rovers barely in the game
-
Gave the ball away then Wright went passed Gotts as though running in water pathetic really
-
We’ve got to get away from this formation. It doesn’t work, and we don’t have the players to fit the system.
A group of non scoring strikers, who’s second touch is a tackle are useless. (Not including Billy)
And Adjayi is a total waste of space
-
Game over?
-
Gotts looks slow
-
Looking second best everywhere on the pitch.
-
We are woefull, can't even make a simple pass, no teamwork, lack any ideas or urgency. Total mismatch.
-
2nd to every ball, Ajay is rubbish how the hell is he at spurs and 1 nil down lucky we are through should have just cancelled this game as we are playing the same shit one up front grant had chance to change it to a 4-4-2 and bottled it
-
We’ve got to get away from this formation. It doesn’t work, and we don’t have the players to fit the system.
I agree and if we can see it why given the importance of this competition have we not changed things?
-
Our passing stats must be dreadful
-
Awful display so far, they look like they’ve never seen a football
-
It doesn’t help with these young lads being in the team, it looks disjointed and no real idea of what to do.
The young lad brown is all over the place, but nowhere near play.
-
Free kick on half way and we kick it all way back to lawlor what a absolute joke it's f**king shit this McCann
-
Our lot could hit a barn door with a shot gun .. Hanlan hasn’t had a pas worthy of the name , but he looks awful anyway . Just glad to see Sterry back on the pitch !!
-
Gotts looks slow
They all look slow. Slow and unfit!
-
Att 2085
-
Only positive was sterry being on the pitch everything else was awful, bradford are playing like they actually want to win, closing us diwn playing at a fast pace, probably why they are way ahead of us in the league
-
Awful display so far, they look like they’ve never seen a football
Just said the same to my lad, there’s no fluidity in anything they do. They receive the ball and have to think about everything. Some moves should come naturally between players that train together every day.
-
1 shot off target and only 1 cross in the first half.
What’s all this talk about having 2 strong teams? I think GM needs to give his head a wobble.
-
Well defenders okay the rest slow can’t pass not strong enough none deserve a place in first team. Ajayi very poor SB not ready Close slow Gotts what did Grant see in him sorry very poor. Middleton worst game Hanlan hard to tell really
-
2 holding midfielders and 3 in front of them and we can’t string a pass together in midfield?
Woeful isn’t the word.
McCann needs to get a handle on this death spiral we are in, I can’t believe this is the same squad we saw in September
-
The back four and Lawlor have been ok, the rest are miles off it.
-
They really do look slow, like they’re running in treacle, Bradford running past us like we’re stood. Awful display, same old set up from McCann, all width with no end product, and no middle so we’re getting rolled over. I know it’s a dead rubber, but I thought we’d have more pride than this, and want to try and create a positive after this terrible run of results.
Need something big after half time!
-
Nothing positive to say about that first half.
-
Most of these lads are supposed to be able first teamers. “2 first teamers for every position”
They aren’t exactly giving the manager something to think about.
Really poor stuff.
-
Totally clueless, lack of urgency, constantly running back to goal, not competing for second balls, can't make easy passes, knocked off the ball to easy, lack of teamwork, no determination. Absolutely woefull. Total mismatch.
-
We concede very similar goals quite a lot, it's like a glitch on FIFA.
-
Like changing all 11?
;)
-
On its own this one doesn’t matter really but if we are poor on Saturday after this then it’s a problem.
I’d have gone with a stronger team to stop the rot but understand the competition doesn’t really count for much.
-
Free kick on half way and we kick it all way back to lawlor what a absolute joke it's f**king shit this McCann
We seem to do this a lot, with throw ins and free kicks. It’s as if it’s keep possession at all costs whereas what we should be doing is getting the ball forward nearer to the penalty area and taking some risks.
-
Ball just bounces off Hanlan and McGrath just gives possession away every time he makes a pass.
-
We look.like a school house team who.have never played together before. I never thought I would see the day when Grant McCann would deliver football as piss poor as this to the Rovers faithful.
-
We need to play through the midfield not by pass it with long balls into channels where there’s no wingers, or strikers so it’s coming straight back!??
If McCann doesn’t change this repetitive formation and tactics he could end up with the crowd on his back come the New Year
-
Shocking half. 6 of this team started at Middlesbrough - how have we regressed so badly in 3 months?
-
Hanlan totally made a hash of an effort 3 yards out. He just doesn’t have a clue where the gap between the two posts is.
-
Our summer recruitment has been very poor. And, as for loans supposedly being the icing on the cake - with Ajayi, Olosanya and to a certain extent Crew, we are miles off having a decent L1 side.
January could be our last chance to save our L1 status.
-
Started better this 2nd half could be 1-1 or about 3-1 Bradford just need to run at them stop passing back to lawlor
-
Hanlan totally made a hash of an effort 3 yards out. He just doesn’t have a clue where the gap between the two posts are.
He's not good enough. How he was ever picked in front of Ironside I don't know. Now Ironside not here we have no options if Billy not playing.
-
Is Hanlon scoring for fun in training or something??
He’s absolutely garbage. It’s like a player from the 7th tier of football on trial at a much higher level!?
-

Ironside never stopped running Hanlan never even starts.
-
No striker on the bench, either.
Have we gone 4-4-2?
-
How the hell did Hanlan not connect with that easy ball 3 yards out?? He is meant to be a number 9 but either his confidence is either shot or he is just terrible. At least connect with it even if he missed the target. Garbage
-
6 of this team played v Middlesbrough! Wow just shows how confidence changes things.
Getting out of these runs means back to basics. Two banks of four no short goal kicks, no soft goals and set play delivery that beats the first man. Getting out the hole might not be pretty but it needs to be done and some principles need to be swallowed to do it. That or we might wait till Jan to win again
-
Having said all that … that was a well worked goal. 1-1
-
Att 2085
I remember days at BV where we’d be thrilled with a greater than 2k crowd
-
Barnsley and Lincoln look to have pretty strong sides out tonight in their game. Hopefully the rest for our players gives us an edge Saturday whatever the result here.
1-1 Gibson should always play v Bradford!
-
Gibson header!??
Would of got decent odds on that
-
Gibson header!??
Would of got decent odds on that
Was just thinking the same.
-
I'm beginning to think that Hanlan has been paid off by Bradford :woot:
-
2 1
-
Hanlan scores !!!!! 2-1
-
Hanlon scores!!
-
Great finish!!
-
Hanlan going to go on a run now lol
-
I'm beginning to think that Hanlan has been paid off by Bradford :woot:
He's just shut me up
-
Good finish, but let’s put it right, that could/should of been his third!
-
You have to be joking!
-
Hanlan is playing better as he has better players around him… same with Gotts and Close who were poor in the first half.
-
Ha ha ha ha. That made me laugh so much. Tidy finish
-
Good lad. Now go and get another.
-
Only managed to tune in at halftime. Think that was a sound tactical move by me!!
-
Are we all a little happier now?
-
You have to be joking!
Great through ball to him. Would have been criminal if he had wasted it. :)
-
Hanlan is playing better as he has better players around him… same with Gotts and Close who were poor in the first half.
Definitely is, he's had a great second half. He's obviously got something about him, whether he can make himself the main man I'm not sure but he's done himself no harm at all.
-

Have you forgot about that first half already, bfyp?
-
3-1 Gibbo slaughters the Chickens!
-
3 1
-
First teamers on makes a significant difference?
-
Top of the league.
-
Keep Ajay away from this team and we are fine think the young lads from our academy have done fine
-
In fairness to Hanlsn he’s probably played more games at L1 than most our team combined (bar Pearson and Billy). So he can’t be just totally useless.
Personally think he’s not a lone centre forward so he’s not been signed for the right role. Not saying he’s a 20 goal striker but he must be useful!
-
If McCann starts with a 4-2-3-1 against Lincoln after seeing a 4-4-2 work much better I will be berating him at Lincoln!!
-

We're not playing a 442 though?
-
Hanlan has fluffed a couple of chances but good finish for his goal. His hold up stuff has been excellent.
-
3-1?
Bloody 'ell I'm getting a nose bleed!
-
Wtf
-
Jeez, 4th disallowed
-
That’s ok I’m on at 18/1 for 3-1
-
Keep Ajay away from this team and we are fine think the young lads from our academy have done fine
Kyle Hurst would have given us more than Ajayi has.
I think it’s clear he’s now done.
Another 4th choice loan winger that hasn’t worked out, that’s the third season running.
-
I take it all back. Hanlan for England
-
Ft
-
I’d have bet just about anything against that result! Well done boys.
-
Board goes up for 4 mins and it’s 90+6 on BBC?
-
What a difference a couple of better quality players makes to a game…
A much better half, and a Hanlan goal - I was fearing the worst when he missed the easy chance, as he’s played pretty well.
Will Flint was outstanding tonight, and against an old warrior, his composure on the ball in the second half was excellent.
-
Never in any doubt.
An easy victory.
-
What a good second half that was, think gm must have bollocked them at half time
-
In other news, Lincoln have beat Barnsley 2-0.
-
Hanlan better second half keep on improving
Gotts better second half playing forward not a Clifton
Flint good and the defence was the best part of the first half and did their job second half
Subs made the difference we looked better and scored three goals well done
-
Hanlan is playing better as he has better players around him… same with Gotts and Close who were poor in the first half.

It's a team game, looked decent with players around him.
We've learnt again tonight some players aren't showing they are good enough (Ajayi and young Brown looked out of it). Middleton seems very inconsistent also. There is no doubt that our best two wide players are Gibson and Molyneux.
I wonder if Hanlan would be a good shout out wide? He's clearly technically good just not sure he's all that effective in the box.
-
I am glad our Grant read my earlier post at half time. This turnaround kind of silences those who think.he does not know who his best team is.
-
Well done lads good second half. McGrath seems to get worse.
-
GM has surely learned a lot about some of those fringe players tonight. How has Ajayi got a Europa League winners medal
-
What was the reason for Sterry going off? Reoccurence of injury or just not up to 90 minutes?
-
What was the reason for Sterry going off? Reoccurence of injury or just not up to 90 minutes?
Would imagine it was a planned change as he hasnt played in a while.
-
Learning from tonight
Ajayi could go back to Spurs now
SB not ready
Gotts better forward but not a Clifton
Close slow better when Broadbent came on
Middleton worst half for him this season
Hanlan better second half after the subs entered the field.
Sterry got 45 mins
Nixon looked good when he came on.
Flint very good 90 mins
McGrath tapered off near the end but had a good game
Senior again steady and defended well.
Molyneux Broadbent and Gibson changed the game.
We will have to be ready for Lincoln who beat a strong Barnsley side tonight
-
McCann got his team selection right , in the second half . We’ve got a bit of an Indian sign on Bradford ( well Gobbo has) . Upwards and upwards !!
-
Good to see Hanlan get a full game, his hold up play and distribution improved massively in the second half(as did the whole team) the early effort after a great ball by Mols was missed when he should of got something on it and many would of said that's it for him, so praise that he kept at it and improved throughout, taking his goal very well to boot.
To me he's proved some doubters wrong and kept going, when he gets a run of consecutive games we may well see a far more confident and composed player, and there is a player there.
Well done Brandon.
-
4 wins on the trot against Bradford. I wish we could play them every week. I heard their fans abusing Jordan again. All they do is fire him up into having a blinder.
I thought Nixon was superb tonight. His cross for Jordan's first was sublime. He seems to be ahead of Sterry right now in returning to full fitness. He starts on Saturday for me.
It's also good to see Luke back on form again.
-
Much better second half. Hanlan looked much improved and deserves more game time. A lot of people in the summer were saying how good Ajayi was going to be but he’s been terrible and seems to be getting worse; I’d have Yeboah back ahead of him!
Good win in the end and given where we are I wouldn’t mind us having a season of mid table mediocrity along with a cup run or two.
-
Far better 2nd half, well done to the team for turning around the game. Less said about the first half the better.
-
Has Ajay been on loan anywhere else? I think we need to stop getting loans who have next to zero experience it’s been a while since one contributed much from memory.
Unless they cost zero I’d rather Hurst or our own younger players were given a chance. They probably won’t be worse and we stand to actually benefit if the do quite well
-
I thought Hanlan was good tonight, I’m not convinced he’s fully fit, and I’m not convinced he’s convinced his ACL injury is behind him.
He should’ve had two goals tonight, and if he’d not strayed offside a third! Overall pretty good though.
He has an awkward gate and his body is in all sorts of shapes when he tries to shoot - Joe Ironside was very similar, neither are natural strikers of a ball.
-

The problem with ACL injuries are that they are as much mental as they are physical, you just can’t convince yourself it won’t go again.
-
Just seen Hanlans goal. It's a good well timed run and a very fine finish. Good through ball too, not sure who got the assist?
-

Tend to agree, it hasn't hugely worked has it?
Herbie kane maybe the last good one at this level? Kelly and crew did well in league 2 last year to be fair.
-
Time to re-assess just what we’ve got, I think. From a wrecking ball of a first half to something resembling a league one side - and not for the first time we’ve been chalk and cheese.
What the hell is wrong?
Whatever it is, I hope we’re learning from it, as the league table doesn’t lie and we’re dropping like a stone. I realise this wasn’t a league game but we wet playing a fairly strong Bradford team.
The stats for the first half were awful but after GM brought the cavalry on - different gravy.
Roll on January.
Oh, and by the way, Joe Ironside scored Tranmere’s winner tonight.
-
Just seen Hanlans goal. It's a good well timed run and a very fine finish. Good through ball too, not sure who got the assist?
Broadbents through ball.
-
What is our best XI on current form, if fit?
TLT
Maxwell
O'Riordan
Grehan
Sterry
Bailey
Broadbent
Clifton
Molyneux
Sharp
Gibson
-
That’s ok I’m on at 18/1 for 3-1
Just for a change !!!
-
Chalk and cheese halves. Much better second, subs made everyone liven up and we could have won with five in the end.
Nixon is a revelation, he’s having a great season. Moly looks back to something like his best, and broadbent made a big difference in the middle when he came on.
Quick mention for Lawlor, never lets us down, big big save first half one v one.
-
Drayrtonion, Grehan is well behind Pearson and on last nights showing Flint
-
Drayrtonion, Grehan is well behind Pearson and on last nights showing Flint
Grehan is a very very good center half. Saying he is behind Flint, after seeing him play against Bradford reserves, is a bold call.
-
What we can say our defensive cohort is the strongest part of our squad including the two loan players in Flint and Faulkner.
We can’t say that about any other part of the squad including midfield and attack. This needs to be looked at if we are going to progress back up the league especially in January.
-
Grehan can’t play fullback for sure. But he’s not let us down when playing centre half.
-
It 's now on to the much more important league game at Lincoln after we surprised ourselves after the most abject first half performance for a long time and an exciting attacking performance against Bradford in the second half, and we come up against a side that were second best in every way except the result at Barnsley.
If stats won football games Barnsley would have got the win handsomely but Lincoln showed they could win games when not on the ball much and are resilient in defence and have strikers who can live on not a lot of service.
So a hard game but at least Grant although having a big squad by now must realise quite a few are not up to the job and can concentrate his team selection around players that fit the bill from now on.
If we play well we have every chance of getting something out of the game.
And isn't Grehan on international duty?
-
What happened in the Bradford game has absolutely zero baring on what will happen against Lincoln. Its a really tough game against a strong Lincoln team.
-
Decisions after last night are not difficult for Grant.

Nixon. ORiordan. Pearson. Senior
Bailey. Broadbent
Molyneux. Clifton. Gibson
Sharp
Lawlor. Sterry. McGrath.
Close Gotts. Middleton. Hanlan
Maxwell injured so he may not be available
Grehan and Crew on international duty
Maybe he will chance starting Hanlan with Billy impact sub.
It will be a difficult game and we will have to play at our best both attacking and defensively to get anything from this game. We don’t have better players apart from Sterry on the bench to improve the side.

On current showing Nixon most certainly is not behind Sterry for selection. We all know what Sterry brings when he's at his best but he hasn't had time to get going after his terrible injury and shouldn't play ahead of Nixon yet.
RB is the one position in the team where we can genuinely say we have two first-team choices.

It is plain that Nixon is worth a place, but the way Sterry works down the right supercharges Molyneux and that's the bonus.

I did not mean Nixon is behind Sterry but we need Sterry fit aswell for the way our fullbacks play. They appear to be injured both right and left more than any other position.

Is there a prognosis on Maxwell’s injury?
It’s a worry because Senior normally gets injured eventually too.

Drayrtonion, Grehan is well behind Pearson and on last nights showing Flint
Grehan is a very very good center half. Saying he is behind Flint, after seeing him play against Bradford reserves, is a bold call.
Sorry, Gaz, but that wasn't Bradford reserves. Apart from the absence of Pointon and a couple of others that was a strongish team.
Cook, Halliday, Lapslie, Wright, Swan, Humphries, and Leigh all figured at some time.
They desperately wanted to beat us last night, for obvious reasons.

They are not first choice though are they Steve. Some don’t even make the squad. In the same way Ajayi, Jay, Lawlor, Hanlon, Gotts et so are our reserves. It was their second string.

I don't think there's such a thing as a second string. It's a squad game these days, and is dependant on many factors, such as injuries, fitness, and form.
All of the players I mentioned have played against us in league games over the last 12 months.

They played last night because they are not first choice. Is our second string as good as our best starting XI (subjective for one or two spots I know)? It’s just not is it.
