Personally I don’t think Terry will pull the trigger, given our usual post January turnaround, but if he did who would you want to take over?
Are there any realistic candidates out there better than Grant that would want to come?

The players are L2 quality .. you start from there and improve the mindset and hopefully you get a better consistency of purpose and discipline , and avoid throwing in the towel in when they concede a goal every time ..

Too early to talk this nonsense.

it’s a fact of management that your only as good as your last win .. and that’s too far back now to remember .,I doubt Ferguson would come back here . But McCann must know that it’s only a matter of time if that decision is not his to make .. excuses are , back to drawing board , it’s early yet we’re not half way into the season. , there still plenty of game to play .. I have to look at myself ….you pick one McCann has used them all ..

Agree that McCann and the wider management team have not done well with the summer transfer business. But for me he's got more credit in the bank than that. He deserves January to try and improve things. Look at what he's managed to put together before.
I think the reality is that its evident there is a lot of money floating about in L1. Tolaj cost over a million to a side which has only just climbed out the drop zone.

What daft thread. If we go down and I say if, I personally don't think we will, there's no one other than Grant I want in charge. It's a long way to April.
Think back to what you wanted at the beginning of the season. I know for one that as long as we stay in the division it would be success. Then push on having worked out what the division was like.
Yes I'm disappointed with where we are and the inconsistency but I'm more disappointed with all the negative Grant calling
-
Ferguson walked away last time because Uncle Terry would'nt cough up to strenghten the squad .He won't sack McCann quick.Did'nt sack Schofield until we were relegated and then replaced him with someone on the pay roll .

As I said in my opening post I personally don’t think Terry will sack Grant, but there’s plenty of our fan base calling for it.
But given it seems no one can actually name any names (apart from Darren Ferguson), it kind of proves the point we wouldn’t automatically be better off getting rid.
-
I'm not currently for sacking McCann but you can't fault Fergies record with us, turned a horrific Paul Dickov team that was only heading one way into McCanns eventual play off team. Signed Marquis, Whiteman, Watters, May... He clearly could find a player.
-

He’s been here long enough to know that’s its his job to build a challenging team . We have not progressed since last season and McCann know this . L1 is meant to be consolidated and build from an improved position, yet we are pretending that a L2 squad will compete with players who are bedded in and can compete . We need some fresh thinking at the top and it has to be from the managerial side as the players are just not capable of doing any more unless the message changes and the style of play and attitudes alter . 1-0 up to 1-5 loss is just not in any players manual ..
-
He's made mistakes, & he knows it, I have no idea why he waited until half time to change it. Tolaj was just doing whatever he wanted & led us a merry dance. He's bang on that he's too trusting with some players, he needs to pack it in with some.
Apart from that I thought he was very honest in his interview. I still back him to get us out of trouble, but we lack leadership, experience in midfield, & physicality. Oh & a Tolaj type striker!
-
I don't think sacking McCann is right. However if I was Bramall I'd be very annoyed at all the money that's been wasted on not even improving the starting 11 1 bit. Absolute crime our midfield 3 still contains Clifton and Broadbent. Both are way off what's needed
-
The person to replace Grant..... A happier Grant, let him work it out, when he gets it right it is worth it.
-

Objectively, not a good manager for us. Got us relegated with one of the worst runs of form in our history, then finished third in a one horse race in League Two, and made us so anonymous in League One that we didn't even appear in the table.

we didn't get relegated under Schofield

Darren Ferguson, if this man had a different surname he would have never managed a football league club.

Not withstanding the £30m already spent on just keeping us in the luxury of having a football club that only attracts 8k every week !
-
Obvioulsy we are in hole and things need to improve. The team does not have enough quality for this level and on top are not even performing to their individual best. However in 3 seasons McCann has guided us to 2 play offs and a championship. I think he deserves time and support to steady the ship.
-
Calmed down a bit now and think we need to stick with Grant and let him have Jan to improve the team.
It’s bad but the question of who replaces him is why I’d stick with him. I don’t think he’s as hopeless as Schofield or McSheffery where you’d say anyone is better. Far from it he’s got a decent record.
Another worry is the club seems like its football side is completely ran by the manager so any change in direction is very expensive and disruptive. Sooner we get serious with a model that’s less reliant on a manager the better.
-
You don’t sack a manager who’s had us twice in the playoffs and up as champions in 3 out of his 4 seasons with us.
We aren’t in the prem where a run of bad games is detrimental. Yes it’s not ideal and yeah it’s not pretty, McCann can not account for players making stupid mistakes on the pitch.
We went toe to toe with the league leaders away last week and again a mistake cost us, this isn’t a bad team it just lacks some street smarts and clearly holding concentration.
The only thing that I’ll criticise McCann for is the loan signings he’s brought in, historically he’s done really well, with the likes of Wilks, Kane, downing, haks and street, this first half of the season it’s really not worked out for the lads been brought in which is the sprinkle of magic the squad needs to get them important goals or street smarts to a young squad
Let him get to January and I’m confident he will turn the tide again
-
Personally I don’t think Terry will pull the trigger, given our usual post January turnaround, but if he did who would you want to take over?
Lots and lots of people on here thought we had a really great squad of players, I never commented, as I thought at the time very poor squad,

The performance today was awful, yet booing, laughing at and abusing our own players isn't helpful nor is calling for the managers head, my feeling is the majority of those are in the under 30 age group. My Grandson told me everybody on twitter was saying GMc should be sacked, that says everything.
Unfortunately we have a generation whether it be football or life where everything is expected on a plate, if the players are struggling we should be cheering louder, if we concede we as fans should dig deeper into our optimism and try to back the team. This is not happy clapping..this is supporting.
TLT is getting dogs abuse, Crew is seen as a waste of a loan, Ajayi also, yet almost to a man our fans were thinking we'd hit the jackpot, especially with the first two. The loans haven't been great for whatever reason, but it's not down to ability as we saw the ability was there first time round, bad run of form and confidence issues with TLT and maybe Crew doesn't want to be in League 1, who knows really.
I have absolute faith in this manager and this team to turn things around this season, and do you know what, who would i want in charge if we were kicking off in Lg2 next August - Grant McC.

All the money????
Where???
Is Pearson on more than Wood and/or Olowu's offer?
Is Grehan on more than Andersons offer?
Is Sharp on more than he was last year?
Hanlan for Ironside, higher wages.
Put on loan with contributions
Flint
Hurst
Westbrooke
Faulkner (now returned)
Straughan Brown
Williams
I cant find where this money has gone

It seems to me as though McCann thought that last years League Two squad would be good enough in L1, and he just needed players in to improve the squad and not the starting eleven. He got that very wrong.

I think thats a fair assumption I hadnt considered........if that is the case then yes, he got it very wrong! The season hinges on Jan.

I think it is partly budget reasons, we have only spent a small fee on Grehan, the rest will all have had an increase in salary too.
We lack pace, height and physicality- this league is very reminiscent of the championship all those years ago with the physique of the players, it’s improved vastly sconce we were last in it.
The problem with it being, 99% of the other teams play in the same way as us, so this is when budget really starts to tell. Those with bigger pockets get the bigger faster more physical players.
This was SODs thoughts, and he said if a club of our stature wants to play at a higher level, we either compete financially, or you find a way to play where you are not reliant on these types of players and style of football.
Like it or not it was a great philosophy and is playing out in front of us now.
I like Grant, I like the rock n roll football, but unless he gets a top end budget I’m not sure we can really compete where most of us want.

That’s an excellent post jmt.
You’ve identified absolutely the fact that the physicality of this division (height, pace, size) has caught Grant & his staff out, let’s not make any bones about that despite those who would come on the site & state physicality has no bearing at this level…..rubbish.
We need first & foremost to do whatever it needs to stay in this division.
Lose Lg1 status & we lose not only this manager (I truly believe worst case scenario he still wouldn’t walk unless ‘pushed’) but if we did the unlikelihood of finding another manager who would move or understand enough about this club to take a step back (yes perhaps again) in order to move it forward.
But we’re not there yet are we, as much as we’re hurting, pointing fingers, doubting.
Keep the faith.

Hell I hope not, he’d give Moly and Bailey away.

I think he’ll stay because of what has happened in the last two Januarys. Whether they are relevant to this discussion now is up for debate.
McCann is much more of a promotion charge manager than a relegation battle one (see his time at Hull). The second half of his first season back (23/24), I wouldn’t class as that because our budget was not near the bottom of L2 despite where we were in Jan pre-Sutton Ironside penalty.
If we’re changing mid-season then Jon Brady could be an option. Someone like Bloomfield may be out of reach but would be nice.
What is impossible for us to say is whether someone else could get more out of the players because aside from Hanlan, no one is in their prime with L1 experience. Even he then is usually a squad player wherever he has been.
Then the next question is - Is no one else better placed than McCann to identify the problems? Or can he not see the wood for the trees and the situation is in need of a fresh set of eyes with different methods?
But then he probably already has targets lined up for January. Sacking him could mean we have to start that all over again and join the back of the queue for players.
It’s not simple!
-
It’s style as well though. A manager who wants to be tight at the back and compact in midfield would get more out of us than one who wants to just go hell for leather.
It’s like Crystal Palace having the same players but instead of being pragmatic just going for it wide open every game. They’d end up in a relegation battle. Hope Grant drops a few principles and concentrated on results for a bit
-
Pragmatism is required especially for the next away games. We need to stop conceding stupid goals and stay in games. Its not how Grant wants to play but its what we need right now. Especially away from home.

Absolute joke we start with Broadbent and Clifton every game. When last year most midfields centrally were better than them in league 2.
