Title: 2nd top to 2nd bottom
Post by: eastender on December 20, 2025, 08:06:03 pm
Have we ever had such a catastrophic colapse  :unsure:
Since we beat Bradford at home we have played 14 games and took a measly 6pts from a possible 42.
On that form we deserve to be in the Relegation places and heading for the trap door. By the new year we could well be bottom and a good few points adrift   :(

It’s the lack of questions  about this stat that seems not to be asked of Mr McCann in his manipulated post match talks .

We were fortunate to be 2nd top and it’s a good job that we got those five early season wins.   Looking back:-

We beat Exeter with a contentious penalty but struggled to break them down.
We needed a last minute winner at Mansfield after an uninspiring performance.
We were outplayed by Port Vale for much of the match and were lucky to win.
We were the better of two average teams against Rotherham.
We were fabulous against Bradford and thoroughly deserved our victory.

Likely we were just ahead of teams fitness wise and match sharpness from our preseason in the first 6 weeks. Now been overtaken by the athletes of the league

Really evident that the club and perhaps the manager have vastly underestimated what it takes to complete in L1 in terms of fitness, strength, quality, ability, tenacity, resilience, game managements, the list goes on. It’s all very well talking about January but in reality who are we going to attract who is going to be able to make a difference?

I hear a lot about our lack of quality but I might be in the minority who think we have decent players with ability. We can often out play teams and the goals we do create as often very good football. Yes we lack a quality forward but a lot of teams do.

We have a softness and game management ability that is wildly below the level we find ourselves. That goes for the manager to. When you’re on a bad run I just never understand that we don’t go back to basics and just grind a result. No short goal kicks lots of players in midfield so we aren’t ran through etc. so obvious.

We are a L2 side who proved we can win at that level but it’s now proven that we can’t step up without bringing in players who have L1 experience and ability!!

We were in a false position at the start of the season as we could be in a false position now.
We need more quality in the side. I believe the manager and his staff have underestimated what we required to compete a season in league 1. Teams have changed budgets are far bigger than the last time Grant was in league 1. Look at today in South Yorkshire we get beat , Barnsley get beat by 3 Rotherham get beat by 3 both are league 1 sides. We will have to adapt that doesn't mean playing to young inexperienced centre halves together who may be okay in league 2. But they came up against a good expensive forward today that took them to the cleaners.
Wasn't just their fault either. I believe today's game was a rude awakening to Grant and his methods. Let's also be fair Gavin Baldwin said in league 2 we can always be better than our budget and we were. League 1 is harder to achieve that when we haven't got forwards who can score regularly hence putting pressure on the defence.
So now we can't rely on young untried at this level players to achieve ours goals we need proven league 1 players

When you start the season without a playing a proven goal scorer who isn’t either at the very last of his career or recovering from injury and unable to take the shirt , its surprising that we got any points  on the board . But now it’s obvious to even the kit man and the grounds man that we need a  striker , perhaps a more incisive decision to actually acquire one and not somebody who hasn’t kicked a ball since the end of last season would  be preferred .

We were deserved winners against Exeter;
Our win at Mansfield was thoroughly deserved and the result of a ‘never-say-die’ attitude;
We were the better team against Port Vale and deserved the win;
We outplayed Rotherham;
Bradford - as you said.

Good post, POD, and re-iterates what I said in another thread. We were brilliant against Bradford, but just about scraped the wins in the others.

Over the season I think the goalkeeper has lost us points, as has the managers in game changes and substitutions.
