Frozen pitch
-
Do you think we may have purposely left the covers off just to give us time to bring in reinforcements and a chance to regroup a little?
-
I hope so. It's time we started winning no matter what it takes to win.
-
The covers and heat lamps have been on all week.
-
The elf and safety country we live in :scarf: I think there was also a danger someone could have slipped in the car park and got a boom boom on their botty

The covers and heat lamps have been on all week.
The lamps are for uv to keep the grass growing and green.
Although they do give out heat, they are not designed to keep frost away. And they spare suspended some distance from the ground. Lincoln city have borrowed a heated dome tent from the EFL to cover the pitch at Sincil bank so their game today can go ahead.
-
Piss poor that we can't keep a pitch from freezing, look at other L1 games going ahead with same or worse overnight temperatures
-
Sheffield United ex premier league team also off so they must be tinpot as well
-
Their heated tent split at the seams ... That's right Sheffield United lose a seal

All three South Yorkshire games are off.

Sky have paid for it

I dont understand the mentality of this. Just straight in to slag the club off, yet other games are off. I just dont get it. I'd love to understand why people act this way, it would be really interesting. I am that type of person that likes to understand these types of reactions though.
I looked this morning and went oh damn the game is off, thats a pity, it looks like the club have done all they could and said right wife what do you want to do today.

Its not piss poor. No other games in south yorkshire are on. Also it not commercially viable to have other expensive solutions in place. Would be a waste of money for a club of our size.

Exactly this. I was really looking forward to the match but immediately thought "right, what can I do now instead"
It's not the end of the world and I never understand the meltdown. Probably same people who shout f**k off to our goalkeeper or burst a blood vessel because we've signed a development player.

I am always bemused that the local lower leagues games get postponed because of a frozen pitch in the winter but can play in August when the soil is baked hard from the heat.
-
Poor planning from the start , everyone knows that the Stands at the Southern ends of stadiums stop the Sun from getting to certain area's of the Pitch , that's why most stadiums have transparent panels on those stands , to allow the Sun through. It surely wouldn't have cost that much more to do this at the time of construction , because it will cost a lot more now to implement it.

They put water on it .

You get smashed into a sun baked pitch then into a frozen one, see which hurts more. Also one is slippy, one isn’t.

Exactly.
I once got a nasty cut on my thigh after making a sliding tackle on a frozen pitch.
It never happened otherwise whatever type of pitch I was on.

We have sprinklers
-
We certainly have sprinklers, even if it is p!sing it down with rain.
Local leagues on municipal pitches don’t have sprinklers, it’s still a hazard for hard ground.
I attended a game where my son was playing, his opponent fell awkwardly from a mid air challenge and he broke his wrist, he thanked him because he was finishing his army leave and was due to return to Afghanistan the next day.

I thought the roof of our ground has solar panels on it

Not really - 2 games in the Championship, including Sheffield United, 3 others in our league and 10 in League 2... Can't help the weather sometimes and they did right to call it early.... IMO

You don’t half post some shite on here

Piss poor that some fans can’t just accept that occasionally, in the depths of winter, we postpone the odd game to the weather.

Wrong. Even with perspex panels, the sun doesn't get high enough at this time of year to avoid casting shadows on the pitch. Even then, the sun doesn't create enough warmth hence the small change in temperature.
It effects very few games per season so certainly not enough to justify the installation of other measures such as undersoil heating, tents with blowers and perspex panels.
-
If that really is the case DBR why does any club install transparent roof panels? It is very obviously to improve grass growth in areas otherwise subject to shade. If part of the initial design there's no reason to suppose it would significantly increase cost.
-
At least we now have 2 weeks to get some players in before the next league match...

Yes they do, but it doesn't help this time of year at least not to the degree that would affect the outcome of today's postponement.
When the growing season comes and the sun rises then yes, perspex panels will mitigate some of the sun that would otherwise be lost to shadow.
-
A little pointless given the south stand is covered in solar panels anyway.
-
Cant wait to replace the whole roof of all 4 sides of the stadium with perspex, then moan about we dont have high enough playing budget.
A new striker or perspex roofing, we went with the roofing you moaned about.
Its literally a moan about every tiny thing.
-
My comment wasn't a moan only joining the debate about the usefulness of transparent roof panels, mpc123 and to finish off my contribution to this, grass doesn't grow at temperatures below 7 degrees C so it's a moot point anyway.
-
Wow, I only come on here now to be baffled by the absolute shite that some people think never mind post!!!!

We keep a few animals, this morning at around 9am I had to defrost and refill the pigs water tub, that is/was in 'full sun'. I went back out at 10.30 and it had frozen over again.
Anyone who has been out today would know there is no warmth in that sun today and no warmth in the air either.
We were one of 7 games called off today, 3 of which were in the championship.
Get a grip.

Agreed and very useful information, thank you
