GM saying in the DFP that there'll probably be one more signing in this window, very likely another attacker.
He goes on to say that the defence isn't the problem, that the forwards have been getting enough chances to put games out of sight
It looks like the defence will remain as it is.
-
Given we are one centre half down that would suggest one a few things, Bailey now considered an option to play there, Faulkner to join the rotation or we banking on winning games 5-4 Ossie Ardiles style
-
If the defence isn’t the problem why have we conceded the most number of goals in the league? I realise we defend as a team but I wouldn’t say our 41 goals conceded is down to our attackers.
-
Very questionable if this ends up being the case.
-
We've conceded 41 goals from an xGA of 28.66. Soft goals (e.g. Cardiff (a), Stockport (h), Barnsley (h)) have killed us in some games.
Do we think the current players (including goalkeepers) can improve and cut those out?
-
Crazy if that’s the case. The tradition strategy has always been to build from the back.
-
Not what he said, he said at least one more which will be a striker.
To me that means he has a striker done and will be announce this week, he knows what would happen if that was announced people will be like what is happening.
I am confident a center Back will be signed this window but he probably still going through the options or they haven't come back from a current loan yet.
-
We have 3 loan places left, I’d be very surprised if they aren’t all filled by the end of January
-
I think you need to re-listen to what he said Steve, he clearly just said theres another forward player coming in at some stage but nowhere did he say thats it for transfer business. Just be patient, plenty of time left in the transfer window.
-
Absolutely no chance we won’t sign a defender.
I would sign 2 with Grehan going out on loan.
-
Also I think part of our defensive problems are midfield.
If you get Bailey to sit back as he used to and have attacker to fulfill his attacking role, it negates most of the defensive problem to.
Our last game we were difficult to break down.
1 defender doesn't mean you have a solid defense.
-
:sWhen asked about any more signings and other areas of the pitch he said there will be. He went on to mention another one top end of the pitch. So we will have see if we sign / loan a defender. Listening to him I don't believe he ruled it out or ruled it in

If the DFP quotes are lifted from the interview he gave about the Adelakun signing, he didn’t even say striker, he said “at the top end of the pitch”.
If you look at the only attacking position we need someone in that is attacking midfield. Unless Billy is leaving.

Leaky !!

Not to sound like Selby but I think Faulkner, if fit, would help us out massively. Our defenders lack aggression and he brings that, along with decent completion numbers too.

Aggression & pace.
I’m dumbfounded he’s not part of the squad, hopefully that will change soon.
-
I wonder if that's the reason we're not in for another defender. He's still out for another couple of months isn't he?
-
I get putting Bailey back as a centre half, however wouldn’t that put the brakes on with his goal exploits, without some of his goals this season we’d be in an even worse pickle than we are now, thoughts ?
-
Our problems in defence are actually problems in midfield - we often don’t have one. So, all too quickly, attacking teams are assaulting our defence with little cover in front of them. This extra pressure on the defence has exposed some inexperience back there, but for me the root cause has come from lack of cover from midfield.
-
IMO a keeper is an absolute must. TLT has consistently made mistakes and pretty much forced the manager to pick a keeper who has been his number 2 for two and a half seasons even if he has done ok when called upon this season.

We shouldn't be relying on a defensive midfielder to score our goals. It's mainly because our forwards have failed to convert so many chances.
It looks like GM is trying to solve this with the signings he's made.
-
If you watch Baileys goals headers and knock ins a lot are in the area that strikers should be in around the six yard box.
As for Bobby his recovery seems to be progressing well and he has nothing but praise for the medical team.
-
We will sign a centre back don't worry.
-
A lot of emphasis on Bailey, however I am not confident we will retain him this window. Also good chance we could lose mols.
This is not doom and gloom, just reality.
-
I can understand why fans are saying we have a major defensive issue, however, I can remember Grant saying some years ago that he didn't care how many we concede because we will always score more than we concede. It's his style to attack and make for exciting to watch football. On that basis, the trouble is our forwards have not scored enough. Whether they have not been up to the task or the service to them has not been good enough is down to personal opinion.

We have to care about the amount of goals we concede and I’m sure Grant does. Our actual goals conceded vs expectation is disastrous. Improving that is the single quickest way to improving results.

We have options at centre back, and Faulkner, Flint, and Bailey are our most talented technically, physically, and mobile.
-
It is only the 8th of the month, Rovers have done more business than most, maybe we should wait? Just a suggestion like!

Bailey has been our best player this season. He’s good at CB but it’s a huge risk moving him there and taking away from the midfield. Bobby is injured. Just sign at least one centre back that has history performing at the level. We need to stay up this season, low risk signings are a must.
-
Who needs defenders, when we have just signed the Fab 4
-
Confirmed by Ricky on X that the Adelakun interview was filmed before we signed Francis hence why he said theres 1 more coming at the top end of the pitch so there is no more forwards incoming
-
I don't disagree at all Gaz, but nobody seems to be talking about some going out, and for that you have to have teams who want your players.
Gateshead have now a new manager who picked and played Flint 90 minutes his first game in charge and would attract other clubs even if he comes back
Faulkner the same if he isn't here he is nearing fitness and would have teams after his services, especially any going for promotion or relegation, what you get with him is on the tin.
At the top table we have Molyneux, Bailey, and just a couple of others we would probably fight to keep. The rest would you jump through any hoops for them to stay or sign, and are probably on wages they will not get anywhere else and we have been stung with that in the near and far past on quite a few occasions.

Low risk realistic CB signing?
-
There is no way Faulkner and Flint are currently upto L1 standard.
-
If they aren't we haven't got any excepting Bailey who is our best midfielder as well.

100% this.
You cant rely on unproven kids on loan, its far too high risk.
-
Faulkner or Flint will never be consistent starters in our team. Harsh thing to say as they are still young lads and who am I to write them off but, it’s also realistic . Too many hearts ruling heads. Fair play to them if they prove me wrong and I sincerely hope they do.
-
Flint will be out on loan again for the rest of this season. Not under first team consideration.
-
And Grehan will be I suppose? wow that's just the repeat story over the years at Doncaster Rovers if true, and somebody needs to learn all that glitters (from other clubs) is not gold.
-
Since nobody said anything about Grehan you did, you will disagree with me even further when I say my opinion is that Grehan actually does have a very bright future in football. I’ll add McGrath into that too. I have watched every appearance both Faulkner and Flint have played for us and I can safely say you are clearly seeing something different to what most are.

Bailey is our best player, no doubt about that.
But I'd be happy to see move back to CB, particularly if Robinson is the player that McCann tells us he is.
-
Who else do we have in midfield that arrives late in the box to score goals like Bails (is it 6?) does?
Move him to the back & you lose that.
We need a McCombe or better still a Rob Jones in that position whether a loan or a permanent. Sadly Pearson is not of that ilk.
-
Stocks army both have one of the hardest things in modern football to do well, they bath have to find some pace from somewhere.
One of the things you get away with for a couple of games until it is analysed as all players are by the professional teams.
Why do you think they have struggled as the season has progressed, and will most games.
Forwards always have, and always will love players they can get at one on one and work to isolate them.

Appreciate your opinion but, I disagree with what you’ve said. Pace matters most when you play across the front 3. You only have to look at Olowu when he first came to us. Strong and rapid but lacked everything else and a lot of our fans wanted him gone until the back end of 22/23 season where he showed bag loads of progression. And I just don’t see that happening with Faulkner and Flint. We also won the league with a back 4 of Paul Quinn, Jamie McCombe, Rob Jones, Tommy Spurr. Not hard to outpace any of those 4 but, we had a solid team full of solid men who worked hard for each other and in the main knew their jobs and stuck to them.

Agree we would lose Bailey's goals from midfield but he'd still be a threat from set pieces.
Also our two new forwards are designed to give us more goals so we won't be as reliant on Bailey's goals as we are now.
Agree with you about Pearson who has been disappointing.
If we can sign a top class L1 CB then I'd be happy with that. Is that really going to happen?
Whereas we know Bailey will be quality back there and all decent teams are built on a strong defence.
