It would be the biggest upset overall as no one from the sixth tier has ever beaten anyone from the top tier.

Not that I hold grudges for a long time but still haven’t forgiven Palace for Andy Johnson screwing us over in the League Cup over twenty years ago. Hope Macclesfield hold on.

They rested their keeper but they kicked off the second half with 7 of their 11 first choice. They have a couple of injuries and a player at AFCON so it’s only really Mateta that could have made the squad any stronger. It’s a huge result for a Macclesfield side who had my mate’s daughter’s PE teacher playing at centre half!

What about Harlow Town vs Leicester, weren’t Leicester in Division 1 at the time , and Harlow were definitely not in what is the 5th tier now

Perhaps you are a Crystal Palace expert, but my conclusion was based on the team they fielded in the draw against Villa working in conjunction with the season's appearances data. On that basis only 2 or 3 regulars started and 5 finished. It is surely indisputable that most PL teams do not treat the FA Cup as seriuosly in the early rounds at least, as they did. Thus, sensational comparisons as have been made about this result are not really soundly based.

I suppose the fact is that journalists are often quite young and when it comes to historic events their lack of knowledge of history/serious research is minimal. They are specialists in writing in a way that they think will appeal to their readers (the majority of whom will be equally poorly informed) rather than making serious rational comparisons.

Looking more generally at the status of the FA Cup in English football you wonder whether the FA themselves have contributed to its reduced standing.
Selling the rights to BBC and ITV kept it free for all fans to follow, but this season they have allowed exclusive coverage today and Monday to TNT/Discovery+.
Restricting viewing in this way will only diminish its status even further and it seems to me that the FA have only themselves to blame as the competition diminishes further. It surely goes against the fundamental principles of the FA.
