Title: A First?
Post by: RoversInSpain on March 02, 2026, 08:48:19 pm
In tonight’s game Birmingham v Middlesbro the referee gave a corner for the Goalkeeper holding the ball too long. It’s a great rule, however this is the first time I’ve seen this happen.
It’s good to see, as I think refs delay the count to opt out of difficult decisions.

I saw it earlier in the season after hearing about the rule change and thinking it was a joke, but sure enough, the ref gave a corner. For me the punishment doesn't fit the crime so I would rather see an indirect free kick placed where the keeper was.

If there was a determination to enforce the rule, it would be in the interests of the attacking team to hinder the GK in despatching the ball. That would add to the excitement of what has been a stagnant phase of the game since the harassing of goalkeepers was effectively forbidden. Unfortunately this kind of Rule/Law with a time limit, like all measure to speed up the game, is largely window-dressing. A lot of time is wasted at throw-ins too and Rovers are one of the worst offenders.

That's the trouble with doing 99 things at once!

Or, even worse, doing hundreds and thousands of things at once.
Possibly even while wearing a syrup.

It’s a good rule. Unfortunately we could have had ten more corners and would still have created bugger all from them.
