this is really a follow on to a previous post about 'the best thing ever to come out of Barnsley' but i feel it is of such historic importance to merit its own thread.
exactly 40 years ago, on march 25th in the presence of the mayors of both Barnsley and Doncaster, Kes had its world premiere at the ABC Cinema DONCASTER
Hopefully you can open the attached item about the glory of the ABC.
Doncaster really was Hollywood or Leicester Square that night, and guess what, i was there. as i was to see Doctor Zhivago at the ABC's opening night.
most of my 'i was there in Doncaster' moments are about the Rovers, with a few from the Dons too, but the opening night programme is just as special as my Liverpool v Rovers programme from 73.
any other memories or 'i was there' moments out there ????

1981 Ashes - the Saturday at Headingley. I was there...
We followed on and were 0 for 1 (Gooch out I think) in 2nd innings at close of play Saturday.
The odds went up on some kind of electronic board for England to win at 500/1.
My dad thought it would be just chucking a fiver away...

Does anyone know what they are planning for the old ABC?
I used to go to the Saturday morning club where they used to have an episode of Flash gordon then a movie.
Once won a Grease poster in the ticket draw they did. Was well chuffed

I remeber going to that ABC Minors it was called. A cartoon, a childrens film foundation film and a Charlie Drake short (no pun i know he was short). Thing is i was 11 and it was 1980, what genius(no sarcasm here) thought 'i know kids would love to see a Charlie drake film!'

It was bought a few years ago with a view to reopening it, but since the closure of the Odeon, the plans have been cancelled.
