First time in my lifetime that we've been the top side in SouthYorkshire.
Anyone know when it last happened? Or if it ever has happened before?
-
Top side in the whole of Yorkshire pal B)
Hull isn't in Yorkshire :)
-
i cant believe its happened before, certainly not in my 54 years on the planet.
a pity that Hull is not in Humberside any more, otherwise we'd be Yorkshire's number one.
for lovers of older boundaries we are also the West Riding's number one as we speak.
no sympathy for fallen greats, but lets have a moments pause for Halifax and Scarborough, and Bradford PA, [although another thread points to their rise.]
lancashire [old boundary] has 8 premier league teams, soon Yorkshire will have a new representative in that league.
time for me to lie down again i feel...........

A quick scan on soccerbase of the season's we were in the old 2nd division and either the Fowls or the Blunts were in the top flight, so this could very well be the first time ever that we have been the top side in SY!

Next year we could do it though,I still don't rate Hull's chances of escaping the drop. Mind you when huddersfield beat leeds in the playoff final we will have to contend with them too! :)

Well I am sat here watching the paints final with a jar or two thinking exactly the same, we are THE top dogs in the area, how good does this feel. Enjoy it all. Off now to book a room at Travelodge in Blackpool for the Easter weekend ahead of our play-off push! ;)

Just picked up my contribution from the earlier \"JR's Challenge\" thread. It would have to be one of these seasons, except...
1935-36. Rovers in 2nd place going into the Christmas programme- behind Leicester City on goal average. However, from then on Rovers slumped, finished in 18th and were relegated the following season. (Sheffield United were in D2 but Wedneaday were in D1 - they just missed relegation. Wednesday finished bottom of D1 in 36-7, but sadly Rovers were bottom of D2!)
1950-51. Back in D2, Rovers were 7th after nine games (three wins, five draws, one defeat) but dropped back after defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the next game. However, they finished the season in 11th place. (Again Wednesday were in D1 and were relegated. In 1951-2 all five S. Yorks teams were in D2- so at some stage it is theoretically possible that Rovers could have been ahead of the pack. Unlikely, though, as Wednesday went up as Champions and Rovers finished 16th- just ahead of Barnsley).
1953-54. Rovers won six of the first seven games (the other was drawn) to top the D2 table for the first time. They lost the next game 1-4 at Everton but they retained top spot until three successive defeats dropped them to fifth. However, by Christmas they were back to 2nd, but two 0-2 defeats by Blackburn (something of a bogey side in those days) knocked them from their perch and a poor late season run saw Rovers finish 12th. (Both Wednesday and United were in D1)
1956-57. Rovers lost two of the first three games, but after 12 games they were in 4th place, with Alick Jeffrey having scored 14 goals. He scored in the next game, at Swansea, but Rovers lost that and then lost Jeffrey with a broken leg (playing for England Under-23s). They never recovered their form and finished 14th. (All the other SY clubs were in D2 apart from Wednesday, who were in D1.)
As for the 1901-2 team, they enjoyed the highest finishing position of 7th in an 18 team League. I believe that 7th was their highest position of the season- they won the last three matches of the campaign, all at the Intake Ground against Leicester Fosse (2-1), Preston North End (4-0) and Burnley (3-0). (Wednesday and United in D1).
Which is a long-winded way of saying- I don't think we have ever been in this position before. ENJOY!

Thanks Red Baron, that was a really good read.
