Hi all,
Just been talking to John. He is very impresed with the VSC 'flyers' initiative to market the Scunthorpe match.
He is so pleased that the fans are doing this - he likes the fact that the fans are doing their bit - and he says he will be doing his bit in return.....with a great squad of players for the next season.
As the 'mouth-watering' close season approaches, it's good to know that JR has seen what we are doing, supports us all the way, and wants the club to help us with further poster / flyer ideas - eg a poster for next seasons fixtures to distribute....
Anyway, he is well happy with our drive and enthusiasm. I think we will be similarly impressed with John's ideas to strengthen the squad...
Cheers,
Gareth

Can you ask John is he at all embarrassed that it is the VSC who are making great efforts to market the club when he is paying employees to do this?
Will he be doing anything to change things behind the scenes at DRFC?
Or is he going to be reliant on the supporters to market the club?
As for mouth watering................ please please don't even go there. No slogans no bullshit. Just keep shtum until we sign anyone then let us know who it is.
-
OK Wellred.....but we have to do something during the silly season to keep folk entertained during the summer !!!
-
Maybe someone should tell John that he will be able to build an even greater squad of players if he/the CEO actually listened to fans and took their suggestions on board.
-
Sorry Gartom but coming up with stupid slogans and promising the earth and then failing to deliver doesn't keep fans entertained it just pi***s everyone off when it doesn't happen.

i think its what chairmen do.
Only last month Barry Fry uttered the words \"this signing will shake the world of football\"
and Gary Johnson walked through the door.
My fecking soup went everywhere

Gareth,
Great idea regarding putting next seasons fixtures on a poster and distributing them. I reckon it'd certainly attract a few more new folk who probably wouldn't go to games otherwise.
I'd certainly be up for distributing the poster if it comes to fruition. Let me know, mate.
EDIT: If printing all the fixtures on one poster doesn't work how about a Rovers newsletter to be delivered throughout the whole borough of Doncaster on a quarterly basis throughout the season? The newsletter doesn't need to be massive (maybe even four pages would suffice) but if it's got all the details and information on (i.e. upcoming fixtures) and it gets people reading, it has to be worth a try.
I don't know if this is a stupid or even too expensive idea to consider, but here goes.
Posters usually get chucked away as trash, so would it be possible to do a fixture list but instead of the same old trash through the letterbox, distribute fridge magnets with fixtures on. 99% of folk wont chuck away a fridge magnet and will think of it as a small gift, whereas most posters through the letterbox get chucked without any notice took whats written on the poster.
Its probably a bad idea, but there you go

Put flyers in the local freebie newspapers (along with the pizza menus & curry house menus!!)
Ask the supermarkets if they would put some out next to the check-outs.

Wellred, I've put this very question on here quite a few times in the past and never got any sort of answer.
Gartom, over to you mate. (Apart from the bullshit bit ;) )

Nowt wrong with that if you ask me.
Im willing to do my part, without any financial reward, hopefully this Flyer initiative will continue into next season, Ill certainly make myself available to deliver/ promote as and when.

The thing is though, the club have a lot more funds than the VSC, so could reach a wider audience.
Good work from the VSC, but it would be 10 times more effective if the club took charge.
After all, it is them that cry for bums on seats.
-
I agree there is nothing wrong with what the supporters are doing to help. I hope he isn't going to rely on the VSC to market the club however.
Maybe we should be looking at running the club shop and picking the team in future as well.

How's about the club giving the VSC a few hundred quid to continue and develop ideas such as a flyer, big poster, stickers etc etc.
If the flyers cost £50, like Rob said it only takes two full price tickets to cover the costs. Considering the good people of this forum delivered 2,000 odd flyers it is incredible value for money. Two people out of two thousand to break even is a no brainer. That's 0.1% takeup for the benefit of BST ;)
As for the issue about why the club isn't doing more to sell itself, I agree it is a joke. It isn't happening for whatever reason and it doesn't seem like there is any chance of it changing.
Anyway. well done to everyone who gave their time for this idea and well done VSC for putting it together.

Do they now, I understood that we were running on a £1.5m defeict per year? The 'club' has what, 1-2 employees in the marketing department?
The VSC has income of ? and expenditure of ? and a heck of a lot more people willing and able to help market their/our club so well done to Rob/TWD and all the rest of you.

Can the VSC capture the 'untouched' catchment areas? Is it not a game of, speculate to accumulate? Can the VSC put down tens of thousands to capture all the area we should be targeting?
Its nice that the VSC use their initiative, but the club should be marketing better, IMHO.
We have a board worth like a billion (between them)but they still dont market properly and are happy to sit back and use the VSC limited funds?
I dont know, maybe the VSC doing this ups their profile, thats the only reason I can think of as you dont usually get a small organisation marketing for a company...especially when the board are Worth like a billion between them.

I think this is a good idea. I had about 400 fridge magnets made to promote my old band through vista print. They're always advertising with lovefilm at the moment. Anyway, It cost me less than a fiver for those. Anything that's substantial and free you keep. I got a radiator bleed key from British gas - still got it. I got a pen from McMillan cancer nurses - still going strong. I got about a million fast food menus. They've been recycled.

Exactly mate, the human brain is trained to chuck stuff away that comes through the letter box. Some people keep an eye out for a big pizza logo as they like to keep their favourite takeaway menus, but most just chuck the rest without a second glance.
However, a small fridge magnet or stickers are seen in a different light in this era were we are spammed both electronically, in emails and through our doors and even foreign Kitsons phoning 24/7

Okay, it seems that there is plenty of goodwill from VSC members to help out so I think that this should happen - GARTOM I now call on you to use your personal contact with JR to ask him about his intentions when it comes to the PR/Media operations of DRFC from now onwards.
From my point of view JR has the full support of every fan/supporter of the club he has built up. We've sweated blood and tears to get money together for ST's, gate money and whatever else connected with the club.
If JR has as much gratitude as he has expressed via you on here, he should now put out a full public statement of intent as to what is going to happen to address the criticisms and concerns directed at the PR/Media departments of DRFC. Should he have plans and doesn't want us to be privy to them, then let him say that through you on here. At least then we'll know that something is being done and await the eventual outcome.
I am certain that he knows what is being said on here but at the same time I am puzzled as to why he hasn't said much about the problems. In his book, he says that he has the gift of the gab and is a superb salesman. Perhaps he needs to teach the people who are being much criticised at DRFC how to jump onto his way of doing things, then we'll have an organisation that will be second to none.

If you are as old a popsider as your name implies, you will KNOW that John has plans. When has he NEVER had a plan? To most Rovers fans, John knows what he wants and how to get there. And his track record suggests he gets where he wants to be.
You can tell the closed season is coming. The hand-wringing and worrying starts. Man, I hate closed season. I wonder what colour shorts will provoke the most disgruntled posts this year.

All down to perceptions and expectations but, as said above:
Oster. Quality, ex prem, ex big clubs. Still many years left. In reference to mouthwatering this was like a leaky outside tap too many on here. Now it's more like Niagra Falls.
Fortune. Same write up as above, but through injuries...it never happened....but who knows, he could have been another Oster in terms of improvement on the squad.
Mustapha and Byron......maybe not mouthwatering (short term, over this season)
Martis........Could go into the mouthwatering section (but before you say it, that was mid season)
Shacks and Billy.........loanees but still signed for season and having to pay for their services. Mouthwatering? I would say so?
It's now you interpret 'mouthwatering' yourself that's significant. For me some of the above were/and still are, mouthwatering. Not that I'm saying anybody is......but if you are looking for Lionel, Andreas, Wesley, Christiano to be mouthwatering then perhaps we need to set our sights/mouthwatering lower. Oster, Billy, Shack have been mouthwatering at our level IMO
-
Shack and Billy and the retention of Stock would give us a lovely spine of a team. Lets get rid of the average and reduce numbers concentrating on quality.
Forget the cups and put the whole effort into the play offs where you can still get the financial rewards even if you are not successful.Portsmouth and Hull will financially collapse when they come down with Burnley the only credible ex premier team of last season proving a test.
Leeds and Norwich will need to heavily invest in the summer to compete in the championship.
The day has come to speculate now and dare to dream!

Good post Cussie, some seem to forget where we were 20 years ago especially when we come to the end of a season.
The VSC always goes into ''meltdown''and negativity grips this forum like a vice!
As you quite rightly said, we have had some 'mouthwatering' players in the context of the evolution of our club and that has been shown by some of the great performances under very difficult circumstances i.e. injuries throughout the season. Who has failed to be inspired by some of the great footy that we have had the pleasure of watching throughout this season even when we have cruelly lost but with style.
I for one, have always realised that JR has a plan for most if not all eventualities and I see no reason at all why that should change going into the future. Some must realise that when climbing the ladder of the football league that every foot becomes harder and harder and given our financial circumstances we have and still continue to over-achieve. I believe we will continue to climb given the solid platform that we continue to build on year on year.
Yes there are undoubtedly problems in the Media/Marketing and Merchandising areas of the day to day running of the club that have been found wanting but know that the ''on the pitch'' activities in terms of funding have and will take precedence (thank God) and that these will eventually be addressed.
I don't believe that JR should have to come out and continually express his intentions more fully to the supporters.........he does enough of that in my view already ; supporters of many other clubs would die to have a Chairman that involves himself with the supporters to the extent he does, wouldn't they ?
RTID.

I agree, the clubs getting relegated this season are no where near the quality of the clubs relegated last season, and the clubs comming up, like you say will have to throw a bit of money at it, so the automatic promotion places next season are pretty much up for grabs
-
Filo the only problem with reducing the squad to a minimum could be that we fin ourselves short of players as we have this season. We were perhaps a tad lucky to find the right loanees at the right time/price to fill the gaps this season.
In my view , we must concentrate on developing/establishing our own youngsters in the squad were we to follow your methodology.
Whilt I agree we must maintain the highest quality of ''spine''as you put it, we have to have sufficient players of quality to maintain a strong team when injuries strike.
-

I fully agree with you but would you agree that all that JR has to do it to say 'OK folks I know where the problems lay and you'll be seeing a difference by next season's start'. No expansion needed on such a statement and all should be satisfied. I would be. In JR I trust. End of.
