Title: Scunny want Kennedy and Dagnall
Post by: paddymacca on May 25, 2010, 10:53:02 pm
kennedy and dagnall (http://www.thisisScunthorpe.co.uk/sport/Kennedy-second-Dale-player-United-s-radar/article-2193)

I now SOD has confirmed are interest in him and there have been a few rumors about Dagnell. Hope they don't go there as i think both players could do well for us.

I'm not getting my hopes up to be honest. We'll leave it too late as usual and they'll go do great at Scunny.

That's what bothers me when I read SO'D's comments about Kennedy:

As well as the 6ft 4in tall Ward, Rovers remain interested in Rochdale left-back Tom Kennedy as a replacement for Derby-bound Gareth Roberts.
\"We've chatted to Tom Kennedy and he's got two or three other clubs showing interest, who obviously he'll go and see,\" said O'Driscoll.
\"We've not offered him anything. We've just said to him that we are in the market for a left-back. We told him that we'd watched him two or three times and that he'd fit in with what we do.
\"As I say, he's got some big clubs looking at him as well and people have got to decide which is the best move for him.
\"I don't think that it befalls on me to put any pressure on players because they have got to make the decision based on whatever they think is right.\"

Ahem- when you're interested in a player who is out of contract, isn't it normal practice to make them an offer? I'm sure that if we offered the lad what Gareth Roberts was on or thereabouts we'd have one very interested footballer.

Ward is rather a different matter. He was reported to be on at least £10K a week at Coventry and there will be clubs who are in a position to afford this (whether they are willing to pay it is another matter.) So with Ward it is a case of softly-softly and hope that other clubs' interest comes to nothing. However, I fear we'll lose out on Kennedy because we'll move too slowly.

Update- it seems that the Blunts are interested in both Ward and Kennedy. They could certainly afford Ward. I still think we may lose out by not making Kennedy an offer when we talked to him.

[/b]

making him an offer wont make a blind bit of difference  if it comes to an auction then we will not win

if he wants to come for footballing reasons then we make an offer and see if it is acceptable

he is bound to consider more \"glamourous\" clubs before us

after all he has played for rochdale

In other words we will sit back and wait for everyone else to be proactive and make an effort to sign these players and then we sit back and wait for the scraps.

we have been proactive we have spoken to him and he is aware of our interest

but as you well know the power lies with the player (and his agent)

so we put an iron in the fire and see if it heats up

Stop fannying about and why not put any pressure on him to sign. Do we want him or don't we?

Why is everyone taking these quotes as gospel? Ever heard of the old 'smoke and mirrors' approach.

SOD has been in the game a long time, i think he knows what he's doing. He is the manager after all.

Let's have a bit of patience, in SOD we trust.

On one hand I can see where SOD is coming from. He wants his players to take responsibility, to use their noggin. So by saying \"Yes we like the look of you, you'll fit in here\" it makes the player think about what he really wants.

On the other hand though how many players might we miss out on because they just don't get it?

How many left-backs do United want?

They only got Taylor and Stewart last season and have offered Naysmith a new contract.

Surely it should be like school where both captains get to pick one player at a time.

I accept that the quotations may not be an absolute reflection of the situation and that (hopefully) there is more going on than it seems, but equally I'm tired of seeing the old \"smoke and mirrors\" line trotted out, before eventually seeing the likes of Mustapha Dumbaya appearing from behind them.

We need to consider who it is that is making the \"silly\" offers here. It all depends on the type of quality we want to attract I guess - and the level of constraints that limit it.

You might be sick with the cliche, as i guess most of us are, but that is how Rovers operate the transfer market, and we have to deal with that.

SOD isnt a Neil Warnock, Kevin Blackwell type (thank god) that blurts out their transfer targets whenever possible to alert all and sundry.

Besides, we dont have the resources to adopt this style as it usually results in a bidding war.

The point is, though, we've already said we're interested in Kennedy. I've no idea what money he is on, but I think we'll be able to offer him more than Rochdale can. If we made him a reasonable offer, we might have him in the bag. If we wait until someone else makes an offer, we will either lose him or end up paying more than we might.

There'll be plenty of clubs \"showing an interest\" but once someone offers him a contract, it will be a different story. I just think for once we ought to be the ones making the offer.

Ward was a different kettle of fish. The only way we would have got him was if no-one would meet his price. To be honest, I didn't rate our chances of landing him.

So apparently Dagnall is signing for Scunthorpe today, but just got this from a Rochdale fa over at TFF, upon asking if there was any news on Kennedy potentially coming here:

Quote
Yep.

He had almost signed for you, pen hovering over the paper sort of stuff, but then got the offer from Rochdale to stay. He likes his mates and this offer was quite good so he was mulling over work/life balance and thinking it through while on holiday.

i'm not sure if he has seen the ash cloud as a portent of doom or not, but the move to you looks more likely now, seeing as his mate now plays in Scunthorpe which is closer to Doncaster rather than Rochdale.

So, take that for what you will. And yes, I've noticed that \"the pen\" has surfaced here too, maybe this is why it hasn't been seen in any potential Oster/Hayter deals yet  ;)
