Title: England and the world cup
Post by: coventryrover on June 05, 2010, 11:24:08 pm
The time has come where you see St Georges flags everywhere and wait for yet more quarter final heartbreak for the England team.

However, I am finding it hard to get excited about England and their chances in the world cup.  It is bordering on apathy.  I feel so disassociated  from the players who represent England due to the greed in the Prem.

As an aside why the hell do England players get paid bonus etc for playing for their national side

Why not start a totally new thread explaining your apathy to us? Oh damn, you have!

Oh and they have been donating their match fee to charity for a number of years now.

No association to local lads Milner and Lennon? Joe Hart who worked his way up through the league? Carragher who's loyal to his club (who some may not like?).

I'll never earn what they do, but I want the same when they are in that England shirt...the World Cup back in England!

Who gives a toss if people are 'jumping on the bandwagon' or 'flying the flag'? It's not offensive, it's getting in to the spirit of things and showing your colours, not that you have to of course, it's just some people in this country choose to, because they can  :)

Can't call myself an England fan as I've never been to an England game and probably never will, but it'd be nice if we won the world cup. Never gonna happen, but it'd be nice.

I didn't think I'd care, but as the time approaches, the typical tribal mentality rears it's inglorious head and I'm as excited as I've been about a world cup ever. It's football, and it's happening soon.

why is it as soon as england reach any final stages
of world cups/euro cups a fair section of the nation
think england have a chance of winning the final.

all of a sudden england are now world beaters and thats before
the first group game as kicked off, sliced bread is not even close

as england plod onto the semi finals the expectation goes up 100 fold, then when the lions do get knocked out most of the nation as woke up and start to smell the same coffee some of us have been smelling since the draw was made.

in simple terms england will not win the world cup

I think any of the top eight or ten teams in any knockout competition have the right to think they can win it.

After the group stages it's only four more games, anything can happen!

Do I think England will win the World Cup? Probably not.
Do I think they have a chance? Absolutely.

So you slate the players for not donating their match fee to charity. Then Silent Majority correctly points out that they do and you're sarcastic about it.

As the great philosophers Chas & Dave once said \"They're Ain't No Pleasing You.\"

there is pleasing me.  Playing for your country is the ultimate for a pro.  I am asking why do they get appearance fees at all when playing for the country, especially the wages they are on.  Its a nice gesture of them but they certainly dont need the bonus do they?

I'm very excited for the World Cup, just because it's football!  And maybe not spectacular football, but perhaps there will be an upset and one of the long shot teams go all the way, or we see a player excel that no one ever heard of.  Maybe even some of the African teams may advance as it's pretty close to home for some.  I'll be very happy if the US even gets a goal, let alone advances. Hopefully the altitude won't be a factor, and that the teams have prepared for it.  When I was in Denver (the mile high city), I was shocked when I couldn't run without stopping frequently to catch my breath.  Of course I'm not an athlete, but I wonder if it may be a factor for players tiring quicker than usual.

Anyway good luck to England or whoever y'all are supporting!   :)
