Well first of all, I have to say I am rather ‘hurt’ by some unkind comments on the forum today. It seems I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t let you know about the Rovers’ plans.
Lets be honest – last season, John rang me as excited as I’d never heard him– and we thought we had some brilliant signings in the bag.
Then at the 11th hour, events overtook us and these players went elsewhere.
At the time I did nt see anyone asking me not to post – quite the opposite - people were asking for as much info, as soon as possible. We are fans, and its natural we want info – and I was trying to respond to this need !!!
In the end we got some good players – maybe even better players....I thought Sharp did OK – didn’t you…??....but it just went to show that maybe no information was better….
I got shot down in flames – and OK – I deserved it – but it did seem really newsworthy and more importantly, realistic news at the time.
Now back to the present…
We’ve had loads of posts complaining about the lack of info. Well, see above!!
We could post every day saying – there are ‘ongoing negotiations’ / ‘behind the scenes’ activity – that kind of no news ‘spin’ – I’m happy to tell you this every day if you want – but really – would you want that ?
Our media team feel the same way – and it should be obvious that we are not sat back hoping the best players come knocking at our door and begging to sign for us…..we are doing ‘stuff’ – but we wont go public until the deal is done, and we don’t want to alert other clubs (as we’ve said many times before)…but they could post this ‘non–info’ if you’d like!
I spoke to John this lunchtime.....and,as to the signings we’ve tried to sort out recently – OK they did nt happen – but we wont be held to ransom, we have budgets to work with, and we are trying to run a tight ship.
With Kennedy, Leicester came in with a late, silly offer – we decided not to enter in to an auction – and so decided not to pursue him any further.
Stating the obvious – we are looking at other targets – in fact we have already sorted out an offer for another left back – so just be patient!.....
As some have rightly pointed out on the forum, defenders are not such a problem….and JR and SOD are quite relaxed about us progressing this - and reckon we have some really good targets to go at.
A similar situation exists regarding us securing a good central defender too….yes we have sorted out a target there as well…..so rest assured we have a few plan A / B / C etc. for these eventualities.
Oster is away on hols at the moment – and yes he has a niggling injury – which we want to look at – but again don’t read anything into this…..we will resolve it all when he gets back…
We still have about 8 weeks to sort out our team…JR / SOD / ROK are on the case, and JR is confident we will have a great line up come kick-off time. We won’t spill the beans, we won’t name our targets, we want to keep our powder dry …so please take a ‘chill pill’ folk and believe in our team. They will deliver- just like they have in the past…but there will be plenty of inaction on the media /news release front as regards new players…..
OK?...well maybe not…

you really have a thankless task in this ,but thankyou gartom what ever happens as long as JR and SOD are there i have every faith

Thanks for the post Gareth, I personally am always happy to see these posts on the forum as they are insightful, it isn't your fault that the 'mouthwatering' signings never materialised last year.
What is it with clubs and silly offers? If Barnsley, Leicester et al are doing this regularly then they will soon find they aren't going to be financially viable for this division in the near future.
Hopefully these deals on the defenders come through soon, it might appease the fans somewhat. I think many of us just get frustrated at the fact that we seem to be slow/late movers when it comes to actually signing players.
-
Thanks for the update. People will calm down once the World Cup starts!

Gartom, I appriciate your updates and understand you are merely the messenger.
Can I ask, do you know how JR feels around the current season ticket sales and does this have a bearing on signings this summer?
Also, how does JR feel about how the club markets itself?
Not exactly on topic, but still questions that I have long been asking.
Cheers.
-
Thanks Gartom.
Think we know that JR and SOD are doing their best,we just to let them what they do best instead of complaining!!! After all we a little fish in a big pond now.
Keep up the good work
-
I think what it is gartom is people including me who have said things today because we felt like we have been caught napping and like with other targets we have missed out again

Gareth, this happens every season, why should this one be any different.
Just ignore the moaners, there the people who are insured upto the bo!!ocks, read the express, throw food out a before its sell by date and generally worry about what they are going to have for tea.
Rovers not signing players in early June!!! is like world war 3 happening in their back garden to these guys.
Roll on August, when the moaners have all comitted suicide and Doncaster Rovers are as strong as ever..........
-
Thanks for the kind words guys.....it is appreciated!!
JR and the team are on the case - so we will have to be patient....as mentionned above - lets get the World Cup started to deflect the aggro elsewhere....
Cheers, Gareth

Gareth.
Thanks for the \"input\". BUT!!, i think John is being a little naieve if he thinks \"Powder\" can be kept dry. Hells teeth the very moment an \"Agent\" is approached by DRFC about one of \"His\" players, if he is worth his salt, he will fax every CCC club who are around DRFC stature or better, with as much Information as possible, in order to \"Enhance\" his clients salary, or try to, and likewise his own. Unfortunatly agents dont posess \"Scruples\", mind in their place , neither would i.

That won't apply to the majority of people on here who prefer Rovers to do well over England or those who support Argentina or USA and hope our 'overpaid' superstars fail, because Messi is short of a bob or two ;)
As for Rovers, I've now lost complete faith regarding signings I'm afraid and will not believe they are actually ours until they have the shirt on their backs and we're past the 31st August when the transfer window shuts (are we aware it's opened?)
It does make you wonder how the hell we managed to sign the likes of McIndoe, Gareth, Neil and Steve Roberts.
I want us to bust a gut and throw the whole Rovers brochure at them!

I'd like to echo the gratitude expressed by others to Gartom for taking the time to type out such a comprehensive response to the concerns, it is above and beyond the call of duty.
Once again my major problem surrounds why the supposed media team (I saw a reference in there somewhere?) are unable to produce something of comparable (not necessarily as passionate or comprehensive) relevance on the official website.
There is a world of difference between asking for \"day to day updates\" and some updates.
The responsibility should not continually fall on the shoulders of an unpaid fans representative, nor should that person feel the wrath of the fans frustrations for situations way outside his control.
There are people in the football club that are paid salaries to speak to JR and SO'D and put together news items that are relevant, useful, interesting and accessible to the supporters, without compromising any private negotiations. Once again they fail to do this and the pieces have to be picked up by a volunteer. Andy Liney was taken for granted in such a way and it seems that so is Gareth, while those on paid salaries sit back and contemplate how \"we can't update people every day.\"
Please Gareth, feedback to JR that the club needs an acceptable minimum level of communication from the official channels, not least to take the pressure and duty off yourself.
That update is appreciated, and it's refreshing to read but will reach a proportionally small number of people on this fans forum.

Is Steve Uttley still the media manager? What does he do every day?
DROS is a shambles, and has been for years. Again its poor marketing, and I will keep banging on about it til i'm blue in the face.
-
Please don't JR get the wrong impression Gareth. The vast majority feel well served by the club but have a life so don't post in the summer. We know JR and SOD will do the right thing even if it drags past the start of the season eg getting Billy last August.
As for the marketing gripes unfortunatley media studies has replaced many practical subjects in our great education system so its just a load of \"wannabe\" kids who think they could do better.
-
I assume J/R is looking at the Season Ticket sales! well i suppose he is content to know theie is a mugs born every day ( me as well ) but a good early signing would have been for the fans . We are bargin basement team all be it with a few quid to spend,so you are correct we have 8 weeks to patch up a new team ,and i'm happy in the knowlage that what ever team we turn out it will not break the bank or leave us thinking we could be deducted points for over spending on players tranfers or wages ( i wish ) your conversation with the MAN , seemed to leave alot unsaid and very lttle confirmed. So lets hope he call back soon.
-
Thanks for the update gartom. It's easy to listen to the moans but I bet if you look deeper there will be just as many people sticking up for the cause.

Cheers for the info Gareth. As you say damned if you do...etc etc
In defence of DROS, in the last week or two they have obviously been trying to improve the content (not transfer related). The '12 years video' was good stuff (sounds like there is more to come), the Wigan game video was worth a watch, the interviews of Woods/Chambers behind the scenes while not riveting, were something offered up to the bored masses. The World Cup shirts feature was a decent enough effort in terms of what has been offered up previously. Also a bonus that someone has made the effort to use the camera properly and also film something without the audio sounding like it was filmed in a fishtank.
As for releasing transfer speculation, there are arguments both ways. Personally, I'm not particularly bothered by the secret squirrel approach of DROS. They released a couple of interviews with SOD last month about what is going on behind the scenes and that's good enough for me.
Roll on the World Cup...

They are not marketing gripes. It is a fact that our marketing department are well below par.

My view is that a number of people haven't got a clue as to what happens in the day to day running of a football club - and while I include myself in that, I like to think that I pretend that I do know! Just because things are not working out to how we would like, doesn't mean that we should lambast certain individuals. What Gareth writes makes alot of sense to me, but like he says at the bottom of his original post, maybe it won't be ok with certain people on here as they will still like to moan instead of taking things in.
If some folks glasses are always going to be half empty, then so be it, there is little we can do about them, but I am going to try to understand that the club are doing everything in their means without wanting to jeopardise the clubs well being.
Patience really is a virtue!

Steve Uttley IS the media manager, but i have no idea what he actually does. The website, videos on rovers player and matchday program are done/updated/edited by Chris Mortley. All i have ever seen Steve Uttley do is take photographs and maybe 4-5 of them occasionally appear on DROS a few days after a game.
Also what does the Marketing manager of the club do apart from nothing much? all you ever see from them is corporate events etc, and nothing in terms of marketing to attract the average joe to a game or into buying a season ticket.
-
I wonder what salary he is on. I'll do it for half what he does.

We signed players like McIndoe when we were in Leagues One and Two because we could compete financially with the other clubs in there. Then it was just a question of selling the club to them. Now we are looking to sign better calibre players (who cost more money, both in fees and wages) and we are struggling to compete financially.
I'm sure we will get in some decent signings for next season but I just keep wondering how long the Board and Management can keep squaring the circle.
-
Christ despite gareths update from JR it really does seem like some people on here really do like to do nothing but live to their \"Yorkshire\" stereotype of being miserable f*****s. I thought blunt n weeds were pathetic ................. Well ok were not that bad but could quite easily become that bad.
It seems like no one is happy unless they are having a go at at least one person at DRFC and although it'd be nice for some good news to come out of the club it's no reason to have a go.
It is very dishartening for a certain majority of people to have dig all the time no matter what you do. I know this as I work in the public sector where the staff and public are never happy no matter how hard you work.
Gareth Your efforts are massively appreciated and other than the carefully crafted news of potential signings I think it would be great and positive to hear or see is how the club are intending to try and get season ticket numbers up even with the help of fans volunteering to raise the clubs profile even further. That would give us all hope and optimism if we can reach the magical 10,000 and obviously help fund wages and signings
-
Gareth, keep up the ggod work mate, you know the normally silent majority are right behind you and I like the other contributors believe that between them JR and SOD will deliver some quality signings, they are unlikely to be headline grabbers if past experience is anything to go by, but I wouldn't miond a few more unheralded signings like Stocky, Wellens, Mills etc. if we are honest did any of us really think they were the players that SOD turned them into when we signed them.

Thanks for the update gartom. You are the man in the middle and should be given a medal :)
-
Gartom - good work fella, don't take it personally.
I'm surprised nobody has blamed Wilson for this yet though
-
Most of us appreciate Gartoms efforts and I'm sure many of us are thinking 'here we go again!'
It appears Gartom has to shoulder the burden of being the link between the club and the fans and to a degree rightly so however, I believe the club haven't helped make his role any easier, in fact it seems to be becoming harder.
When we are 'provoked' due to the lack of key information coming out of the club from official sources, Gartom has to intervene and 'calm' things down.
If the club improved it's communication to it's audience then we wouldn't be having threads like this.
Whether the club likes it or not, it has to be aware that there will always be speculation in the media about current/new players etc, and it has a duty to it's fan base to quell the speculation by releasing 'updates' even if that means there is nothing to report or thing are wide of the mark. Just the knowledge that JR and SOD were on holiday and no signings are imminent would have been useful.
The club appears to be getting worse at engaging with it's customers and accusations of being 'out of touch' are understandable. This is not the first time that we have discussed these issues and the club appears to have chosen to ignore suggestions for improvement.
It cannot afford to do so, especially with ST numbers falling. It needs to engage and embrace what passion and enthusiasm remains amongst us.
All they need to do is invite a chosen few to work with Gartom and the club to deal with day to day experiences that effect the fans. Call it what you will, a focus group, steering group, committee or whatever. At least they will be seen to be listening to fans.
I'll say it again, had some sort of initiative like this had been adopted then we wouldn't have had the big hoo ha
about season ticket prices sales and, would have been more likely that the club and the fans could have worked together to maximise potential sales/reduce the number of losses.
Other key areas of communication could and can be improved. This issues are too big for the likes of Gartom, Charlie Swallow, the media team, the commercial team to do on their own in isolation.

Cheers Gartom for the update. We all know there's a few who won't be happy until we've beaten Barca in the Champions League Final (JR hopefully ;) ), but I think most are realistic at heart.
I think Jon raises some valid points about the OS shouldering the responsibility for updates though, no news is often interpreted as bad news in the football world and could affect ST sales. Personally I'm happy hearing nothing about targets until they're signed, but I trust the board and management team. It's almost impossible to keep targets secret though.

Am I to infer from your statement that had we bought a left back from Rochdale, you would be pitching your tent outside the Keepmoat for an overnighter, in preparation to batter down the ticket office doors at first light?

Some fans will believe the action of signing a player is louder than saying they will and they are trying their best but two players would rather go to Barnsley on silly money or go to Leicester to play second fiddle to a lad named Bruno!
I'd be over the moon right now if we even just announced Mutch was signing for a year, it's a start, can't be that difficult, but it's still not happening.
I'm completely at a loss to understand why Hayter hasn't signed, unless he is waiting to see what moves we make in the market regarding the purchasing of strikers maybe?

I reckon, and this is totally guess work, that Shackell wanted 8k a week, we offered 7k and Barnsley offered in the region of 10k. I take a lot of what the club says with a pinch of salt and a critical eye. However, the reason Barnsley beat us probably makes more sense and adds up. Could we have tried harder, possibly. But if that includes adding an extra few quid here and there, then forget it.

I'm impressed. Really impressed. I hadn't realised you have such intimate knowledge. who do you talk to at DRFC that tells you these things? Must be some one quite senior I'm sure. Staggering though, isn't it, that they'd tell such vast lies in public as they obviously have to be doing given the insight you've just made available. Keep it up TND. We can all really learn a lot from your source.
Cheers

You'll never excel at this game if you can't get that simple fcuker.

Sad and pathetic you say? No, I just think it's time the board really pushed the boat out this season as the foundations seem to be in place. I can promise you it may never get as good as it is now with the manager etc. I will pick and choose my games this year, Thanks.
And about the tent comment, obviously not the case, but since we have missed out on around 4 players this year as other clubs have offered the standard 'silly money' its getting rather dull lets face it.

Im getting tired of the 'silly money' comments too,It's Silly money by league one and two standards but its NOT silly money in the championship.Yes we may not be able to compete with the contract offers for alot of players in the championship but around 75% of the other championship clubs can afford the wages been offered to some of our targets.Reading(mills),leicester(wellens now kennedy),Barnsley(shackell),Derby (Greeny,Roberts) they have all apparently offered silly money.I don't want the management to be wreckless with the clubs finances but just admit we cannot compete with the going rate of the championship instead of claiming it was silly money all the time. Also did Rovers not pay all Sharp's wages after Jan last season? And if we have already had a bid turned down for him does that mean we are prepared to offer him a contract with comparatively 'Silly wages' as the rest of our squad goes?Is Leicester paying Kennedy more than we will offer Sharp?

Maybe the Football League should introduce salary capping. Different limits for each of the 3 divisions.
Cue abuse ;)

Not a bad idea however we seem to be one of the only clubs in the championship who attempt to live somewhere near our means. Something like this would be good but I can't see it getting passed through.

I take it you did sums at school?
Go work out how much more money Derby get than us when they average 25,000 crowds and we average 10,000.

You have missed the point BST,Im not questioning why they can afford more what im saying is,its not due to silly offers its due to us not been big enough(has your sums show) in this league to compete for most of the better players. When we was in league one and signed 4 players in one week you never heard the other teams interested shouting Rovers have offered SILLY MONEY did you?Oldham fans got pretty annoyed at one point as we beat them to a couple of signings at one point but they never moaned we offered silly money.

I think the silly money quote is about relative worth. Take Kennedy for instance. He is unproven at L1 let alone Championship, and the money that Leicester have offered him is ridiculous in that context. If Kennedy had stayed at Rochdale, taken L1 by storm and moved on that sort of a deal in January you could probably make a half-decent case for the move, but not just yet. He'll either be seen now as a good bit of business or an expensive flop, but its in his hands.
