First let me say what a great day this is for the club. To sign a player of Billy Sharp's standing, for such an amount of money is fantastic and I think John Ryan and everyone else should be commended immensely. Now, I saw the article on BBC Sport and the wording in the bolded bit is what has led to me making this thread:
Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the club record signing of striker Billy Sharp from Sheffield United.
Sharp, 24, has accepted a three-year contract after the two clubs agreed a fee of £1.15m on Monday.
It has been revealed that the transfer has been paid for by the club's directors, and is in addition to manager Sean O'Driscoll's budget.
Sharp scored 15 goals in 35 appearances during a loan spell at the Keepmoat Stadium last season.
In that case, what with SOD being given the clubs 'biggest budget ever', can we expect several more signings in the coming weeks to really establish us as a force that is looking for promotion? It is also a nod to the 'KM2' who have come in for a fair bit of grief with the fans in the past.
Roll on August 7th!

That's amazing to read and the thought of more big signings to come is almost too much to comprehend right now. Suffice to say I'd be on top of the world if we did bring in some more significant signings, but at this very moment I'm not even bothered about thinking about who's next!
Signing Billy Sharp is absolutely MASSIVE for this club.

Exciting times.
Can't believe I will be on holiday until the start of August. I will miss all the excitement!

Ryan said the transfer was not part of the budget, i read that as meaning they wouldn't have had a million to spend if Sharp had gone elsewhere, and they'd pushed the boat out especially. I don't think it means it is additional and that there is more cash in the pot for big fee transfers. I'd love to be proved wrong though!

I read it as an addition to the budget given and seeing as SO'D has the largest ever budget in Rovers history it leads to the possibility to other signings.

I read it that if you're off out to spend £10,000 on a 2nd hand Ford Focus, and someone offers you a Ferrari for £15,000, you buy it, but you don't get the Focus as well!

I read it that you bought the Ferrari knowing that your Dad was stumping up the money and that the wife insited she needed a Focus to get out and about too. Besides would you let your wife drive YOUR Ferrari!!

I am getting a bit giddy,'Nightmare' one of the Mods on 'Pride of Yorkshire' (predicted we would sign Billy) has said the cheque book is still out and there are to be two more major signings, one of which will eclipse that of Billy :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

He's now said its SOD signing a new deal in the next few weeks, and he's right it will be an even better signing than billy. Also at least one more quality player to sign.

Personally I don't think there be any more perm signings which is fine by me we all know how much of a genius in the loan market Sean is he'll be doing his budgetary dealings there I fancy with Mutch & JET coming back + a dominant centre back on the horizon. Personally I think talk of Andy Keogh is just that we don't need Keogh if we can get & keep Mr Brooker fit, fingers crossed

Hi guys,
I'm a spurs ST holder and hear that you will be signing our young CB Steven Caulker for the season. This kid is the next ledley king (without injuries - hopefully) and you will certainly enjoy seeing him next season. He oozes quality. You may get a couple more on loan seeing as O'driscoll is plas with arry. Hope you have a cracking season.

don't need Keogh
Either that's accidental arogance, or you've lost the plot! Don't need? Are you mad?

Any team in the Championship would benefit from Andy Keogh and we're no different. I'd be over the moon if he joined on loan to team up with Sharp again, but right now I just want to enjoy the fact that we signed our number one target rather than thinking too deeply into who's next.

I agree wholeheartedly, Jon, however statements like that need commenting on, surely. We already know that we're getting 3 loanees in, as reported by Gartom, via JR, so where's the harm in speculating? BS signing, as I've already said on other threads, will be a significant deal for us, in more ways than one.
Sharp and Gillett in and 3 loanees to come - it doesn't get any better - but apparently it might, after reading other threads. I'm not going to sleep tonight!

Where we stand at the moment I feel we are well blessed in midfield. Now Gillett has signed I think that department is sewn up.
Now we hear there may only be 2 more loan signings.
Now the thought of Keogh signing is truly mouthwatering and it would give SOD more options tactically with Brooker, Hayter and Fairhurst providing those options and also for injury cover.
That leaves us the defence. With SOD making it known we are on the hunt for a defender and having lost out on Shackell and Ward, even with Martis, Webster, Lockwood, JOC and Hird, I think it's fair to say the other loanee must be a centre back.
This young lad from Spurs sounds a great prospect so I will be well happy if he signs for us.
That means it's unlikely we'll see the return of JET and Mutch which is a pity as I would have liked to see how they develop.

Where do we hear that, DBR?

Allegedly what JR told someone at Askern.
