Title: Jimmy O'Connor
Post by: Red Rover on July 14, 2010, 04:20:01 pm
Looking at everyones preferred teams at the minute, who would have thought 2 seasons ago that Jimmy would have made such an accomplished Centre Back?! Not the tallest of players but after watching him all last season I'd say he was the best defender, shown by his constant Man of the Match awards!    Good on the lad for adapting his game at a very high level!

How good is that tho, a £130,000 signing in 2006! In this day and age of paying millions for a player, SOD obviously knew what he was getting with Jimmy and he has repaid his £130k price many times over! What a nice approachable bloke as well.

Yes I used to love listening to his show on a Sunday afternoon when I was a kid. It was on in between Round the Horn and the Ken Dodd show...'Where's me shirt'

Oops ..I read it as Jimmy Clitheroe

O'Connor was signed by Dave Penney.

I've made that mistake. Yes, it was actually SO'D who followed Jimmy up 'norf' about two weeks later.

And Jimmy is still only 25. Some could say the best is yet to come, and I hope it does in the red and white of DRFC!

So Jimmy's responsible for SOD being up here then!

I'd love to see Jimmy used as a Center Back this season because i think he's the best player at the club in that position, and have Chambo & Friend at full backs.

I haven't seen Friend play but if he makes the grade I would agree.

Completely agree, but would like to see another centre back on the books on loan. Just don't think Martis, Lockwood and Hird are the strongest.

Not seen a great deal of Friend but got a good feeling about him and hopefully makes us say 'Gareth who?!'  :)

Jimmy did really well at centre back last season but I think I'd prefer to see him stick to right back. He's excellent going forward and is a quality full back, whereas at centre back whilst still solid I think he's a bit more vulnerable. I'd rathr have an established centre back playing there alongside Martis.

This certainly isn't a knock on Jimmy btw, he's easily one of our best players!

I think you will always find that the Goalkeeper is the first name on the team sheet :P

Is everyone on here forgetting about Byron Webster.

He was playing well until he was (ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE) crocked at Sheff Utd.

I have a feeling a few games under his belt alongside Jimmy O'Connor and we could have another decent defender.

Just not happy with Martis he does not fill me with awe inspiring confidence.

I'll echo that

Let's not forget SOD actually splashed out 100K for Webster so he must have seen something - and we know what a good judge he is normally

Penney signed him but agree a great player adaptable, quick everything you'd want.

Webster has certainly \"filled out\" over the past 12 months.  I stood next to him a few weeks ago and he is huge, with biceps like thighs.  He certainly looks like a proper destroyer of a centre back, rather than the skinny, lanky kid who joined us.

When i saw this thread title i was hoping it was going to tell me about a new contract..I may be wrong but doesnt Jimmy go out of contract at the end of this season?,i wouldnt want to lose hime like Green and Roberts because if clubs knew he was potentially on a free they really would throw wages at him...
