Title: Rovers best seasons ever after 25 games
Post by: Dutch Uncle on January 08, 2017, 02:04:28 pm
1946-47: 25 games, 43 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 63 points @ 3 per win; final position 1st
1927-28: 25 games, 38 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 55 points @ 3 per win; final position 4th(!)
2016-17: 25 games, 36 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 52 points @ 3 per win; final position ????
1949-50: 25 games, 37 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 51 points @ 3 per win; final position 1st
1934-35: 25 games, 35 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 50 points @ 3 per win; final position 1st
2003-04: 25 games, 34 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 49 points @ 3 per win; final position 1st
2002-03: 25 games, 35 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 48 points @ 3 per win; final position 3rd
1983-84: 25 games, 34 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 47 points @ 3 per win; final position 2nd
2012-13: 25 games, 33 points @ 2 per win, equivalent of 47 points @ 3 per win; final position 1st

Cause for optimism, but there is a warning from 1927-28 when we fell apart dramatically

I had a look in Tony Bluff's history what happened in 1927-28. We had a bad run of injuries after Christmas and the board sold the centre forward, Alan Hall, to Middlesbrough.

Strikes me that the only thing that could derail us is a really bad run of injuries, especially now there are no emergency loans. Of course it is something that could happen to any of the leading clubs.

RB, at the start of the season I figured that we would be in a good place because of the curtailing of the loan system. Strong budgets have been negated to some point because clubs were capable of adding to their squad despite not having the funds to employ those players on a full time basis.

I suppose that is true. Also you need to think ahead and Fergie has shown he's capable of doing that.

Have we ever remained unbeaten at home. I remember in 83/84 we got to about the second last game when Reading beat us in a rearranged midweek game 3-2. I think we then lost the last home game as well. (possibly Hartlepool)

Yes, in 1932-33

Yes, in 1932-33

Our home record that season was Won 13, Drew 8, Lost 0 and those 21 games formed part of our longest ever unbeaten at home run in the league when combined with the last 11 home matches of 1931-32 (W9 D2) and the first home match of 1933-34 (which was won) for total of run of 33 matches (W23 D10)

In 1983-84 our first 19 home matches were unbeaten (W13, D6) before inevitably Reading won at Belle Vue. Hartlepool won at Belle Vue on the last day of that season.

This season's unbeaten 13 matches at home is the longest from a season's start since that 1983-84 run, although it has been equalled twice (W8 D5 in 2002-03 and W9 D4 in 1986-87)

I am still gutted about that Reading game! In the whole Football League, only two teams were still unbeaten at home before the game and Reading was the other team.

But then we ended their 31 game unbeaten home run early the following season which was some consolation!

^^^ I think we beat Reading 4-1 and Alan Brown ( Chris's dad ) got a hat trick

I want us to remain unbeaten at home but not if it means we end up drawing far more than winning. You see it with teams they get into a mindset of protecting that record and they can end up with a lot of draws. You saw a bit of it with Carlisle.
Even the Arsenal 'invincible' team went through a stage of drawing quite a few at some stages they were protecting that record. Of course that side had such ability that they also thrashed a few sides and won many games comfortably.
Some teams are beat before the game starts against a side unbeaten at home. You will always get sides though that don't respect it a bit then you can have problems if the team is in 'protection' mode.

Damn we went to pieces in some of those games in 1932/ 3 . Wouldn't you just be disappointed in those 8 points you dropped as a player. Lol
WTF went wrong ?
