Title: Question for one of the football historians
Post by: Belle_Vue on May 19, 2017, 11:04:05 am
So we already have Marquis, May and Mandeville. Possibly Madden coming in also.

Has a team ever fielded a first 11 all starting on the same letter?

I wouldn't imagine so but the West Ham team of the mid sixties had about team squad players beginning with B.
Seven played in the 1964 cup final,
Bond,Burkett,Bovington,Brown,Brabrook,Boyce and Byrne.
I can't think anybody would beat that without engineering it.

Rovers could have done it the season before last (at a push):

Marko Marosi/Remi Matthews
Kevin Mbuti
Gary MacKenzie
Paul McKay
Luke McCullough
Felipe Mattioni
Gary McSheffrey
Harry Middleton
Curtis Main
Liam Mandeville
Jack McKay

Chelsea got quite close with their H side in the early 1970s

Hinton, houseman,Harris, hollins,Hudson sure there is one more but name escapes me.

Wouldn't count in the Netherlands itself IDM, since when putting surnames in alphabetical order over there, the 'van' or 'van de' or 'van der' are all discounted.

Bugger, well, it makes sense that you would know that..!

Alternatively to the starting letter, there must be many teams where the players' names all end in the same letter, ie Bulgarians in "-ev" and Romanians in "-u"..

It's the chap with the extremely long throw in back then > Ian Hutchinson

Hutchinson ,Hudson,Harris,Hollins,houseman,Hinton > the Chelsea H side.

Sure they all played in the 1970 cup final at some stage during the two games.

He  was a youth team player. Saw him play once. He looked solid but nothing spectacular.
