Gents - has anyone got a link to footage of this game and the replay also - would love to see it...
-
Can remember that dentists must have been busy for replay - I think most of School boys in Donny had an appointment that day
-
In those days most Rovers fans also supported a Div 1 team. I actually went to that game as a Liverpool "fan" and stood on the Kop. But I am happy to report I came back fully converted to Rovers and haven't looked back since!
-
I dont think I have ever seen either the original game when we almost won with last kick of the game or indeed the Replay.
Would be agonising to watch Peter Kitchens last minute lob again and see how near we came to THE biggest Cup Giant Killing to that point and I would say it would still be the biggest right till now
1st in top tier v 92nd in entire League - with a 2-3 scoreline damn damn damn !
-
We were bottom of our Division and they led First Division at the time of that game.
-
If my memory serves me well I was at that game and we got a draw? We lost the replay at Belle View but I wasn't there to see it. Keegan said that the Donny game was the hardest game they played on their way to winning the Cup.
-
I wa a sales rep at the time of these games and the replay was of course a midweek afternoon game, due to the power cuts not allowing floodlit matches.
I skived work to go to the match.
-
Don't think I've ever seen any footage from the first game, the 2-2. May not have had cameras there. Can only recall a couple of photos in the aftermatch press reports.
A few years ago, saw the colour footage of the BV replay. Can't recall the source though.
Similar with the 7-2 at Spurs when drawing 2-2 at h/t, don't think there's anything on film.

And in the replay ........
-
Did we wear our change kit in the replay too?
-
MetalMicky - I’ve spent quite a bit of time in years gone by trying to find some video footage of either game .... to no avail sadly. Would love to see some highlights!
-
I’ve a vague recollection that the replay was covered on Look North at the time. It was a 1:39 or 2pm kick off on a week day because of the power cuts due to the Coal Strike meaning we couldn’t use the floodlights. I had a “cold” that day.
-
Did we wear our change kit in the replay too?
I dont think we did but cant honestly remember whether we were predominantly White then to their All Red
One thing for sure the African Violet kit looked immense that day at Anfield !
-
In the newspaper clip above, the away kit is worn yet the article talks about the replay..
Our home kit then was similar to ours now, but without the bra straps..
-
I remember the game at Anfield, we were close to the players tunnel, and in with the Liverpool fans.
When Keegan scored I turned to my mate and said, they will get five or six. The Liverpool fan next to me said, no no you have some great young players.
When we scored our second goal the same fella turned to me in a rage and said, you dirty set of ba******s you are kicking us off the f*****g field.
We still think it was one of our funniest moments watching football.
I think from memory we were the only team to score a goal against them in the cup that year.

Amazing to think that even with Kitchen and Big Bren, we were bottom of Div 4.
I just had a look at the final table for 73-74 and we finished third from bottom.

I thought you were right with the no goals conceded but in the Semis they drew 0-0 with Leicester and then beat them 3-1 in the Replay
Big praise for us though - rock bottom and getting 2 and 7/8ths of a Goal at Anfield. Bloody Crossbar

They were all kids.
Stan Brookes - 20
Bren - 18
Kitch - 21
Steve Wignall - 19
Steve Uzelac - 20
Mike Elwiss - 20
-
Yes, i see that.
You never win anything with kids.

Interesting though that the Liverpool team average age is only 25.

A lesson to be learned about what happens when you put the youth team out against underestimated opponents!

Almost, they had a defender called Dave Rylands making his one and only start for Liverpool. Larry Lloyd was back for the replay, he made a difference.
-
I don’t think Kitch was ever 21
-
I was at both games and the one at Anfield in the third round sometime in the 60's when we lost 2-0

I was at the 2-0 Anfield game too.
We were excellent that day and if i remember correctly, it took Liverpool until the 70th minute to get the first goal.

January 1969
The noise when Callaghan or Thompson got the ball out wide was something I always remember
Great performance by us - and also remember Tommy Smith going into Pancho Regan intent on "stopping" him ... but JR kept on going leaving Smithy writhing on Half way
-
That memory will live with me forever Wolfy. They used to call Smith the Anfield Iron and I said at the time he must have metal fatigue.
Their pitch wasn't a patch on the Belle Vue bowling green either.

I was in the end opposite the Kop singing you'll never walk Alone, we'll support you evermore etc. and wonder where the other 10,000 or so around me disappeared to over the next four seasons.

A bit similar to the extra 10,000 that went to Wembley then ?
-

Well not quite. They fielded a couple of rookies in defence who never played for Liverpool again. For one poor sod it was his one and only appearance.

Extra 20000 as we had 27000 at Wembley.

I wonder how many of the 27000 Rovers tickets were bought by Leeds fans with Donny postcodes though because there were plenty of them in "our end".
-
At least we enjoyed our day more than they did theirs.🙂
I remember the relegation season when there were two clowns unfurling a Balby Whites flag at the end opposite thenLeeds Kop. They quietened down after Billy scored but I suppose they had the last laugh on the final day of the season. To be fair though I've lived in Bradford since 1978 and generally have only had respect from both Leeds and Bradford City fans for sticking with my team. They aren't all bad and a lot of Leeds fans over here don't class Donny Whites as proper Leeds fans.

And the turnout at Cardiff? And I meant the JPT not us who were there for the 7 goal mauling in THAT season.......

Saying that I have to say Ninnian was good especially Uttleys goal from the halfway, over the years apart from the disaster season Ninnian wasn't bad.....

The then head of Ridgewood Atkinson threatened any pupil absent on the replay afternoon with expulsion. He would have faced an empty school as the entire school walked out! I was a school governor at the time who thought him pompous and laughed my head off.
