Title: Well done this transfer window
Post by: selby on January 11, 2018, 03:43:33 pm
To Fergie and the board, two good players that we know, and they know us, and a chance  to get Houghton on a permanent in the closed season.
And two players who are young and have and are visibly improving.
I for one am a very happy bunny.

Houghton on a perm would be the icing on the cake.

His hair isn't far off a perm already!

Prior to Whiteman, when was the last time £100k+ was spent by DRFC on a signing?

Prior to Whiteman, when was the last time £100k+ was spent by DRFC on a signing?

Probably Theo Robinson

We don’t know how much we paid for Niall Mason. But whatever it was I would say that was a really good investment, too.

Was Andy Williams a free transfer? He was certainly worth six figures at the time either way.

Theoretical I know, but I think Curtis Main may well have been 'valued' at more than 100K when we swapped Husband for cash plus Main.

Also Harry Forrester was signed just before Theo for I think 150K

Don't think we got value for money for any of those three.

I think we also paid an undisclosed fee for Ian Lawlor. Again, that’s proving to he a good investment.

There's still work to be done but the signs are positive atm.

I just hope we have strengthened with new players by the end of the transfer window, as opposed to keeping the same players we had last month.

But I'll judge our business when the transfer window is slammed shut.

You nearly did it Anne, you nearly praised the club, but could not quite  let yourself go.
Getting a couple of players fixed up with other clubs could be more on the cards than other new players in could be more of a target this month Anne.
I look forward to your  comments at the end of the window, I think I can guess which way they will go.

We have the same squad that we had this time last month.

We still need a commanding, battling, ratty midfielder.
We still need cover at left-back.
We still need a frontman (though granted we need to ship Williams out first, and that's about as likely to happen this January as Scotland winning a World Cup).

But importantly, we still have time left in the transfer window to make these things happen.

There's no negatives to be had about either Whiteman signing a perm, or Houghton staying on loan for longer, but the areas where we all identified were weak in the first half of the season are still to be improved.

As I said, lets see where we are in 20 days or so and 4 more league games from now...

Go on, DU, you must have a list of players we've signed for over 100k?

Heffernan
Thornton
Mills
Hayter
Robinson
O'Connor
Sharp
Jackson

Graeme Jones? Albeit a transfer of assets between two entities under Richardson’s control.

I think you can add Stock, Bennett, Spurr, and Byron Webster (remember him?)

Forrester you missed from the message above

Some we will never know (e.g.Mason)

The Dare to Dream book quotes Brooker and Shiels as deals 'rising' to 125K and 165K depending on appearances

I think we paid 30K plus installments for Duffy, and these installments were paid by Birmingham when we transferred him - that may have been a total of more than 100k.

Now that won’t go down as one of the best deals that Rovers have been involved with!

Although Peter Catt was once reported as saying 100K for Jones I think 10K was the more accepted figure (to Bridlington I think - can't imagine we paid them 100K). I am fairly sure Jackson was our first 100K+ player.

Didn't we end up paying more than £100k for Kyle Bennett after a tribunal?

I certainly remember SO'D saying that if he knew in advance how much it would cost us, we wouldn't have gone for him - or words to that effect.

I believe the tribunal fee was reported as 40K immediately (summer 2011), a further 40K in January 2012 plus 25K for each of 15/30/45/60 apps + 20% sell-on, i.e. 180K plus 20% sell-on. We must have paid all of that.

I remember it being similar to that.

Nothing short of a small fortune really for a player who was largely unproven but 'had potential' when we signed him.

Wasn't Alford over 100k as well. Also didn't we pay 100k for someone else in the Conference who never played for us or am I just dreaming that!

Didn’t think Byron Webster cost much if anything. Happy to be proved wrong if anyone knows for sure?

According to the Ashes to Glory video/book and Tony Bluff's 2010 book, Alford cost 55K, although I also remember 50K being reported at the time. Again I seem to remember the big fuss about Jackson being our first 100K plus signing a year or so later.

For Webster I don't have any concrete reference to hand, but it was certainly reported at the time as 100K. That doesn't mean it's true of course.

I seem to remember a £100k figure for Webster too.
