Title: Let's talk about the Burton Albion game
Post by: selby on August 15, 2018, 08:46:10 am
The biggest test of the season so far in my opinion, A canny manager, and for the first time this season one of the relegated sides of last season, that will have players who have played at the higher level.
As a football  supporter they have my admiration for what they have achieved in their short EFL. history, which considering the size of the club has been remarkable.
They are coming off their first win of the season, winning 2 - 1 at Shrewsbury in their cup game.
In that game  from reports they had a strong centre of defence, especially in the aerial battles, and Templeton and Boyce ran the midfield aeria, with Lucas being a threat up front.
In Clough junior they have a manager who has always had to be tactically aware of the other sides strengths, and should not be underestimated for his ability to get a tune out of players that others don't rate, and get his sides to compete.
It will be interesting to see if their rise in the pyramid has changed their catering, as in the past visits it was very good, with good beer and food.
On to our game, Tommy Rowe will he be fit? and Kiwomya? who were missing at Scunthorpe.
Would you make changes from the Scunthorpe game?
Can we keep up our energy levels with two games in a week?
Will we carry on our scoring in games? which has been at odds with last season.
Are you like me expecting a large away following?
Are you going to the game?
Will Clough be waiting with a trick up his sleeve, and spoil our  style of play?
Much to look forward to, and discuss, please have your say.
I think we will have a clearer view of just how good we can be after this game.

I expect Tommy to play, I think he is the player GM was alluding to in respect to game management. In that respect I doubt he will feature in any games other than the league

Yeah Rowe was rested so expect he'll start for Blair then leave it the same as Tuesday. Could make a case for keeping Blair based on what sounded a complete performance yesterday but Tommy is our captain and one of our best so should come back in for me.

Rowe in for Blair. Possibly Copps might go to the bench as his game time will need managing and if that is the case then Blair starts in his place. Don’t make changes that are not needed.

Boyce is a forward for them, and their fans are getting sick of Clough. I don't believe they had a very good home record last season so let's hope we give it a good go on Saturday.

There's a car park over the road behind the away end near some industrial units. The entrance was on the roundabout. It was about a fiver last year but was very convenient and safe. Nice ground with a good tight away end, so should be a good atmosphere.

On the Scunthorpe forum, one of their fans commented on how much quicker and fitter we looked this season compared to us in the games against them last season with many of the same players.
He commented it was not like that last season in their games against us, I find it quite a damning statement on our fitness last season that. I can remember commenting early last season that we had to get fitter and harder, but didn't realise it was so noticeable.

Last weekend Kane was a good pick for M.O.M. last night I thought he was even better.
At his age, if he keeps this up he is going to be some player, he will have to be a very good player to get in the Liverpool team in future, but at the moment I would not bet against him achieving both club and country status, he looks that good.

Second worst after Sunderland and no team in Championship scored less or conceded more than Burton at home last season. Only won four home games all season.

C.B.  last season means nothing, we have started well, but the minute we start to take teams lightly is when it will come back to bite us.
They will not be an easy team to play against, hopefully we can get a result, but we won't if we come the Billy Big b*llocks, and don't approach the game properly.

Think their another team that are struggling for numbers currently. They haven’t named a full bench yet... seems like there operating to a tight budget... I would have thought they would have banked a few quid from their 2 seasons in the championship but doesn’t look that way

There were 41 Tickets left when I was ordering in the Seated bit which went down to 39 as I watched and then 37 after I bought two - AND just 2 Standing ones left

Low down but better than watching on SSNews (Sorry Jeff)

If it's a sell out of seats then everybody needs to sit in their own seats otherwise arguments will occur.

If they are anywhere near the middle it is almost certain that someone will stand in front of you.

I doubt it. I'm pretty sure from memory the away entrance just opens out into either turn left to the seating or right into the terrace and I doubt they'll check the tickets past the turnstile. Anyone wanting to stand will probably go into the terrace - or you'd hope so anyway...

The terrace is behind the goal as well so it's even more likely anyone wanting to stand will just stroll into there rather than f**k about in the seating.

It looks like we may have close to a full squad to pick from, which is good news.
It was interesting to read a poster on the Burton forum writing that he thought their squad was better quality than ours, which coming down from the championship may be true if they have kept most of their players from last season.
They do look to be strong in areas but as we know from experience the goalkeeper can be a mixed bag.
With another big supporter following it should be a great atmosphere, for what could prove to be our biggest test on the field of play up to press.
If we have more or less a full fit squad of players, Grant will have some difficult decisions to make, both with the team to start, and the substitutes bench, with most players who have played a part playing well, rather him than me.
What would be your line up?
I hope it is again a great game to watch, and of course we come away with the three points and everyone going has a great time. I am expecting a hard game, but in our current form we are capable of winning.

We have a run of 3 difficult games in a week, so the squad is going to be tested, no doubt.

Hopefully, we come out the other side with everyone intact. This week could be an indicator for the season.

Fingers crossed!

With 3 games  in a week and GM saying that certain players workload has to be managed then I see him playing tomorrow maybe rested Tuesday and play again next Saturday.
So 10 of the 11 should be shoe ins then who plays in the last place in the front three. Maybe Taylor will start but there is at least four other players for that position all with different attributes some good some not good enough.

Just had a look at their squad and they have some decent players who've had most of their careers in the Championship, especially in defence with Brayford, Buxton & Turner, but not sure we've got too much to fear.

  The big lessons today,
 1) When you are on top in a game you have to take your chances.
 2) It only takes one moment of sloppy control in a dangerous position to give a goal away.
Today we did both, missed chances that should have been put away especially in the first half, and Whiteman  doing what he is prone to do, and miss controlling the ball, allowing Burton to play the ball in the box, and score.
I feel we were worth the draw, but faded after they scored, when we took our creative players off, and replaced them with  Blair and Taylor, and May coming on for Wilks.
I have never been a lover of changing three men in short succession, in fact I don't think I have ever seen it work, and not with inferior players.
All round we were not bad, but really threw one if not three away, being sloppy in midfield, not taking chances, and substitutes who never got into the game. Lessons we were slow to learn in the last couple of seasons, it will be interesting to see what approach the new management team take to a recurring problem.
Grant will have learnt more today about his team than in the first three games I think.

Sorry selby but I don’t think we were ever on top today, yes we missed two sitters but we were slow in our build up for most of the game and kept pumping the ball up the middle which was food and drink for their defence, McCann stated after the game we were lethargic and deserved to lose, not sure about the last part I thought a draw would have been fair but we did look lethargic.

The major difference for me today was between our main striker and their main striker. John missed an absolute sitter that looked harder to miss than score; Liam Boyce had just one chance for them and buried it.

We were decent in the first half, but fell away badly in the second half.

Just seen the highlights on Sky and bad miss by Marquis. Some other chances on another day could go in. Powder puff defending for their goal. One of those that could have gone either way but McCann will be wanting better than that as a standard performance.

Look, we're a work in progress. Not the finished article by any means, although recent results have, perhaps, given people cause to get carried away.

Compared to the DF years I can see better movement off the ball with more space opening up as we move forward, better use of full backs in driving the pace plus Wilks is a real handful (where's Kiwomya btw?).

Today was a bad day at the office for Marquis.

We'll get better; plenty to look forward to IMHO.

I thought Herbie Kane was magnificent again today, MOM by a country mile. I've not seen GM's post-match comments, so I've no idea why he brought him off; he certainly didn't look tired or injured, so it must have been purely tactical.

Let's hope today was just a one-off, especially as it was against a very average looking Burton side. At least we've now got 2 home games to try and get back on track again.
Title: Re: Let's talk about the Burton Albion game

One word springs to mind after that performance yesterday, bullied. I think their midfield laid the law down early doors and never let us in the game at all. I think Kane was subbed because he was being constantly battered, I lost count of how many free kicks there were against him! We don't possess the kind of midfielder who can fight fire with fire and we fell short.

Up top, the front 3 were well below par and Copps, in particular, had a poor game. Taylor was an improvement, May wasn't. Marquis missed the chance of the game and Wilks frustrated me all game - just now and again, pass it!

Overall, we hardly deserved anything, but then again, neither did they. Playing at home with the sole intent of stopping the other side from playing will not bring the crowds in - only just over 3,000 yesterday and a third were from Donny!
Title: Re: Let's talk about the Burton Albion game

Goals change games - and if Marquis taps that in then its 0-1 and they cant sit back and try to just stop us. I cant speculate or hypothesise what would have happened after that of course

Was disappointed with the display especially compared to Scunny and how many times did we pass it straight into touch - some when the intended target was 5 yards away

Also too many Passes when we should have shot - and vice versa against a Team we should have beaten. However thats football and (cliche alert) - we need to bounce back starting Tuesday

The way we play, pressing around the pitch is going to make it difficult to play well sat, Tuesday. Unless we can rest players occasionally.

Guess it shows what we need, that bit more ruthlessness.  We have plenty of good league 1 players. To make the step up we have to score more and make less mistakes.

Still a positive start though.

I didn't go but listened in, it seems if we had finished like previous games it would have been a winning result.

We are never going to play at 100% all the time
but the main thing is with a lesser performance still came several great chances which is encouraging.

Let's see how GM's managerial skills are now for us to bounce back, hopefully we can get back on track.

It's very early in the season but very encouraging even after our first defeat.

Really disappointed we didn’t win yesterday. A game we should have won as we created the best chances. If we had scored first I am sure we would have won the game.
The finishing needs to improve as we missed a bag full at Scunny and at least 3 we should have buried yesterday.
Yes we are still work in progress of course. I don’t understand playing Blair in a 3 in midfield.
His passing is not good enough and is a complete waste of his pace. We were chasing the game at 1-0 down and the use of the subs in the way we played was bizarre.
Onwards and upwards and let’s hope the players are as disappointed as I am and go out on Tuesday and take it out on Shrewsbury.
Good teams bounce back after a defeat. I am confident we WILL 2-0

First game of season yesterday and can see lots of positives over last couple of years. Should have been 1 up at half time and that would have made them change their organised approach. Plenty to make me look forward to Tuesday
