Title: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: RoversAlias on December 05, 2020, 12:37:30 pm
Less than three days removed from what must go down as the sourest defeat of the season, Rovers are back in action at Sixfields against Northampton this afternoon. And fans will be present!

Yesterday I wrote the latest "ITEN Fly-By" touching on today's game among other topics: https://www.intotheemptynet.com/post/iten-fly-by-hull-hurt-northampton-knocking-sims-smiling (https://www.intotheemptynet.com/post/iten-fly-by-hull-hurt-northampton-knocking-sims-smiling)

You can also check out the "It's all Cobblers to Me" podcast which I appeared on to discuss Rovers and the game earlier this week: https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5jYXB0aXZhdGUuZm0vY29iYmxlcnN0b21lLw&ep=14&episode=NGI4ZGQ3ZDItYmMyYS00OTk1LTg4YzEtNTE0NGU4MGI1Zjcw&pe=1&pep=0 (https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5jYXB0aXZhdGUuZm0vY29iYmxlcnN0b21lLw&ep=14&episode=NGI4ZGQ3ZDItYmMyYS00OTk1LTg4YzEtNTE0NGU4MGI1Zjcw&pe=1&pep=0)

Right then, how are we all feeling about this afternoon?

If someone told me we had John up front and Butler on the wing I'd believe them.

Not sure what to make of that, surely it will be 3 at the back with that personnel, and try and overload midfield
Title: Re: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: RoversAlias on December 05, 2020, 02:10:44 pm
It's either a 5-3-2 or an utterly bizarre 6-3-1...which I can't imagine is the idea!

We shall see. To be honest I forgot about Butler the last couple of weeks!

I’m looking forward to this one. Looks like we got pace and width up front with a quality striker

Going to be an interesting game to watch with this line up.

If he plays a back 4 with butler right back and John left back.
Then we’re in trouble

Interesting selection..  3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1.?

As long as we are more effective than in the last game that will do..

Can’t watch this as I’m at work and my lunch break isn’t that long.!!
Title: Re: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: DonnyOsmond on December 05, 2020, 02:17:38 pm
John-Jules
Richards Sims
John James Whiteman Halliday
Butler Anderson Wright
Lumley

That might work.
Title: Re: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: NickDRFC on December 05, 2020, 02:18:13 pm
Not even going to try and guess how we’ll line up there. Hopefully it works - if not I think Moore could be in for some pretty severe criticism.

Come on someone - where are they plaing Butler ?

Centre of a back 3 with James and John as bombing on Wing backs ?

I'll go with 3-4-2-1. I suggested 3-5-2 the other day, but it looks like there's only one striker in there.
Title: Re: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: RoversAlias on December 05, 2020, 02:24:01 pm
The only other way I can think is as a flatter 5-4-1.

John and Halliday as full backs. James and Sims as wingers. Whiteman and Richards central and TJJ as a lone striker. Can turn into 5-2-3 fairly easily in possession too.

John-Jules
Richards Sims
John James Whiteman Halliday
Butler Anderson Wright
Lumley

That might work.

I agree.

Halliday and James as wingers making it 4 3 3 most of the time? With Sims, JJ and Richards up front.

Butler is surely the easiest to predict - he’s going to be at centre back. Surely even Moore wouldn’t put a 37 year old old-fashioned centre half anywhere else?!

James and John are both left footers Wolfie; Halliday will be the one on the right.

Bizzare team selection. If not sure wing back will work if we’re expecting Cam John to play there. Last time I was really confused by team selection we won so hopefully it works somehow
Title: Re: Cobblers v Rovers
Post by: sedwardsdrfc on December 05, 2020, 02:37:46 pm
If we’re playing 4 centre backs and 2 fullbacks (potentially both in midfield) then the lads on the bench must be guff! Why sign loklio and Williams if they can’t get a hand now... crimilar with Lokilo especially we had him half of last season so should have known if he’s garbage

Wow. I really hope it works out for DM today but what a bizarre team selection.

I know Northampton are a big physical side, but 4 centre backs, and 2 full backs potentially in midfield roles? Strange indeed.

I would've thought after what has happened in recent weeks, and with players coming back, that he might be able to see the wood for the trees and simplify things a little bit, but it looks like he's just digging deeper and deeper with complicated systems and playing people out of position.

It'll be interesting to see how it works out.

The difference between Fej and JJ is that JJ has that extra bit of skill to unlock a defence, that I haven’t seen in Fej yet. Fine margins win games.

Agreed there PDX.
JJ has had to do the chasing of lost causes though like Fej but as this game progresses I think we will push more players forward to help him.
I expect us to stay cagey until (if) we get 2-0 ahead.

If anyone thinks there is any positivity to take from how we are playing they are deluded. We are winning. Let's be grateful. But this is so bloody hard to watch.

Pipe down. FFS. Are you Carling in disguise?

Some people are easily pleased. Do you actually think we are playing well?

TBH I think we are just doing what we have to do under the circumstances.

Excuse me, but I’m supposed to be negative!

We’re winning 2-0 away and yet people are not satisfied. We’ve a paper thin squad, we’re scraping the barrel of who we can select and we’ve played 3 games in 6 days!

What do you expect - Barcelona?

Get a f*****g grip.

It’s also good to see a centre forward that can work the back four we’ve brought Okenabirhie on and what’s he done so far.
Our squad is paper thin even when Taylor and Gomes back we need at least two more players if we realistically going to challenge.

We've been fine since going 1-0 up. Dominated the ball, kept it simple and patient and we exploited a gap through that patience to find a way to a second goal. Can't ask for much more on a shite pitch against a bunch of clodders in my opinion.

Very unusual for Ben to miss a pen but it is fair to say that if that pen was missed in the prem it would have been retaken. Both the keepers feet were off the line before Ben struck the ball

Then why didn’t the linesman flag? Only asking, as that is one of the main reasons why he is standing there!

That’s a question only the Lino can answer. I’d assume it’s because it’s easier for him not to at the level that we play at. Not that it makes it right.

What I don't like is the situation where we are always just outside the top  6 but with games in hand,  psychologically, the difference actually being in the play off places gives the players a lift..

Well...

Hats off the DM. He had a plan and we won 2-0 and should have been three. Ok so they were rightly down to 10 men for more than 70 minutes and just put bodies behind the ball but we actually opened them up a few times and made it count.

A few thoughts:

Andy Butler is still a classy player.
Josh Sims - loves it here, and wants to stay... Is it wishful thinking to think we could sign him in January? He was great today. His workrate is phenomenal and he doesn’t half win the ball a lot.
Fej looks dejected - not sure what is going on bur his body language is clear. Never really got into the game. A couple of times he had the opportunity to run at a defender who was retreating and just gets off a tame shot straight to the keeper. He obviously has goals in him but he cuts a forlorn figure at the moment. He’s a big unit, and should be giving defenders more trouble.

I think I know what DM is trying to do with players playing in different positions - it’s to breed versatility - so different options open up. We are so used to players being one thing, but I think DM has new ideas... just a theory.

Get Taylor and Gomes fit then we might be able to keep the side settled we found out today that JJ is the centre forward we need. Sims and Taylor. Whiteman, Smith and Richards with Gomes to come in. Defence today looked strong and Butler showed he can still do a job. Hasani is learning is trade but Williams is finding this level to much for him. Okenabirhie showed nothing again when he came on whether out wide or when he went down the middle. Copps came on but starter I’m not sure now

Indeed, and we have seen snippets this season of how much better we can play - it would be a concern if our recent performances were as good as it gets..

I couldn’t watch today but am delighted with the win.
