Title: Some really bad news
Post by: selby on December 31, 2020, 10:42:05 am
I have just had a PM from Dave known on here to many as The Vicar telling me he has inoperable Pancreatic cancer and is quite ill.
Not good news but I thought a number of people who post on here and are friends and acquaintances of Dave would probably like to get in touch with him at this bad time for him and his family.
A really committed Rovers and Dons fan who loved the games  and has been a fan of both all his life travelling all over the country supporting the teams and being a good player himself when younger it has shocked me to the core.

Hello can I say what a great lot on here in a time of need, I have been encouraged by all your messages so thank you from the bottom of my heart. I has now given me the courage to fight on so head is what they said, and what I plan to do.  I had pain in my upper tummy so I went to the doctor, he immediately he sent a email to DRI, I waited and waited for 6 weeks then I received a phone call asking me to go for a colonoscopy, I had that then waited again  but3 weeks later I heard nothing, so I rang them up and they said oh yes we have seen that one can I come in in 2 weeks, which if it was cancer was excessive as you have to work very quickly.  I went for an MRI scan on the 24th of December, then I got a call to co to the private hospital at DRI and the guy I saw did not seem to care and a bit brash he ended up telling me that I had a cancer of my pancreas, I asked if they can operate he said in a Sturn voice NO, when I asked why he said it was to near a blood vessel, I asked surely there is something to do, he replied WHAT CAN WE DO, so I said something is better than nothing.  As this went on he said he will send the scan to Sheffield cancer department to see if they can suggest anything so I am waiting to see what they say.
I have now through all your encouragement to fight this all the way, I am now going to ask them to take away as much of it as they can then give me whatever to try and kill of this flocking ugly thing, surly this or anything is BETTER than nothing. Thank you for reading my experience xxx

Dave I'm so sorry about your latest
news. It's terrible to hear a mate , and a fellow Rovers fan as distraught as you were on the phone a couple of days ago.

I told you then that you would have a support network around you , like no other, from the start and that would help you deal with this terrible prognosis.
As you can see there is huge support for you and your family such as I have enjoyed and gained strength from on not 1 but 3 occasions. Indeed you yourself kept this forum fully upto date when I was fighting Covid  in DRI. It's quite unbelieveable how much strength and mental support you can get just from reading again and again how much you are valued, loved, would be missed etc. from both friends and strangers.
This has always been a forum where all opinions, all troubles can be shared without fear or favour and  that's what we will need to be to help get you through this.
Day or night , someone will be here or on the end of a telephone to give you independent advice and encouragement just when you need it .
I know as I and many others have benefitted from just that throughout the years.
Take care Davo and more than that ...STAY IN TOUCH.

Don't let it go Dave, put as much pressure on the people responsible for dereliction of duty and the not bothered brigade as possible.
If there is a chance make sure they try to take it. If you are not happy make a diary of dates and times and the names of the people responsible and contact your MP and medical authorities.

Excellent advice selby - make them own your problem too and as has been said, earlier in the thread, there is NO EXCUSE for a lack of empathy with both you and your wife when receiving such devastating news.
Wait to see what the Sheffield oncologists have to say  and if necessary seek further reviews of your case .
It's so important to keep any times and dates and with whom properly you might need to refer to them at some future date .
Most of all don't give up but then I know you of all people to be a fighter and that's what you will need to be going forward.

Scary that the attitude there has not changed in 20 years, sounds exactly the same as when my mum was diagnosed the same. Keep fighting Vicar and if you can, try and get your GP to refer you to NCCC in Newcastle (assuming you have transport) they are excellent

Dave,
We had a similar problem when my wife had a biopsy 12 years ago over the Christmas period. It was 9 weeks before we got the result was cancer. A second operation was required by the Oncologist which showed she was still producing cancer cells and was directed on to chemo. Average life expectancy was 4 to 5 years so you can see there can be a good result with luck.
On the whole I was satisfied with NHS and the service they gave but unfortunately she is still a Liverpool supporter first and a Rover second.
My advice Dave is keep asking questions when you have doubt, don't be shy, somehow I know you will.
Best of luck pal

One last comment. My brother had a biopsy of his prostate. He was told he had cancer and the following week he had a call from the hospital saying that in fact he never had cancer. It doesn't inspire you with confidence.

The specialist nurses my wife was under complained to the head of department about how she was being treated by a particular consultant,  the head honcho looked at it and took her straight back under his wing nobody could make a decision about her care without speaking to him no matter what day or what time.   To be fair she was a very complicated case and the whole department had come across her at some point :)  in fact half the hospital knew of her :)   I'm still friends with some of those that treated her

Having lived in Sheffield for 29 years I can say their hospitals are far superior to Doncaster. You need to get referred to a cancer specialist. Having moved to Branton 2 years ago, we make sure to keep our NHS contacts in Sheffield. All the very best at fighting this awful disease and thanks for your contributions to this site.

When my dad was diagnosed with oesophogial cancer it put his name down for a trail which is taking place at Weston Park hospital. The facilities were better there than Donny. He lasted 12 months longer than anyone else diagnosed at Donny at the same time as him. I put it down to the treatment and care he got up the hill in Sheffield.

To be fair when Mrs Toes had a stroke they were absolutely brilliant at DRI, the quick and effective treatment she received means that now 4 years later you'd never know she'd had one.
I had cancer treatment at Weston Park 10 years ago and they were brilliant too, and obviously I'm still here.
I worked in the NHS for 30 years so I know, if properly staffed and funded, they will do their best, wherever you live.

Thanks Bob for that.  I have now had some better responses now.  Yesterday I went to Sheffield for a pre treatment blood test to see if I’m allergic to chemo if not I will then have a face to face meeting with the specialist on a Friday between 2/3 weeks time once I have had that on the very next Tuesday I will start my treatment once a fortnight for 12 weeks.  After that I will have radiotherapy, but the 12 weeks will make me very very vulnerable so will see no one in that timeframe, but as long as I am better I’m ok with that, so thanks everyone

Good luck vicar and hopefully the Rovers can send you into your treatment on a high. Remember we are all behind you and thinking of you even if you don't feel like posting on here as much for a while. :scarf:

Had a bad day yesterday but I’m sure I will get then most of the time but I’m interested to get as near as I can to get there, if it shrinks enough I’m hoping that they can get it out but if not at least a few years at least. But thanks

Hi all my chemo is not going well as it has made me very ill so my specialist is deferring it for another week to give me some recovery time, then I got a call from him with news about my PET SCAN and he said that the cancer has NOT SPREAD ONE BIT

Vicar, my wife had chemo and it made her very ill. That was nine years ago and now she's fitter than most people her age, including me.

Fantastic news Dave , that's a great outcome fella. Look when you do feel fed- up just text me and we will have a natter. I'm here 24/7 and we can even avoid talking about recent games ( you have enough on your plate ) - nuff said.
