Our great town is now a City:

Doncaster City rather than Doncaster Rovers anybody?…never, never, never!
-
The second city of South Yorkshire.
On a level with Sheffield now.
-
Eleven years ago Essex had no cities, now they have three. Chelmsford in 2012, Southend in 2021, now Colchester.
-
Levelling up no doubt.

Bob, the only other choice is Rotherham, it is either them or the Dingles. Rotherham probably has the stronger case.

Will MK Don's change their name to MK City, dropping Don's, which only belongs to Wimbledon.
-
It could be the "perfect excuse" for them to finally cast off their Dons tag
-
Wasn't the main reason teams were given City in their name to distinguish them from other local teams? ie they are the one in the city, as opposed to MK which is 2 miles outside the centre. MK Bletch would be more apt.
-
Norwich and Leicester spring to mind, as teams called city with them being the only FC in the city.
I think MK city would work, but not Doncaster City.

Coventry, Cardiff, Swansea and Hull are others of course. Can't think of too many more. Salford maybe but that depends on where you class old Trafford as.

Doncaster Rovers rolls off the tongue because 'Rovers' starts with the same letter that 'Doncaster' ends with.

Isn't Salford a city in it's own right? Guess that is why Salford City is called Salford City FC.

I guess each case is unique.
Norwich CEYMS F.C., who the two players who forming Norwich City were originally with. Also around before NCFC were Gothic F.C., and probably some of these - Norwich Electricity, Norwich Federation, Norwich St Barnabas, Norwich St James.
Leicesster City started out as "Leicester Fosse" in 1884, then follwing ww1 and finacial issues, that disolved and a new club was born with the city name - interestingly not long after Leicester had been given city status, in the same year.
