A blast from the past!

Great to hear that one of the best 3 managers that we've had in my time is still on form! His book will be on my Christmas wish list for sure!

Was delivering next door to Stans home in Cantley this morning when the press arrived to discuss his new book. I also thought he was one of our better managers, played some decent football under him. Didn't realise he was 76 though, scary.

Hate to start another row with you Savvy, but which one of Bremner, Penney and O'Driscoll doesn't make it into your top 3 then?

Absolutely. Was it not Stan who left for Bolton then came back for Dennis Peacock.

Going to play it safe here, and say that because O'Driscoll is the present incumbent he doesn't yet qualify!!!

True- I'd have to rate those three, and possibly also Lawrie McMenemy as well, ahead of Stan. I liked Stan a lot when he first arrived. He revived our fortunes after the dreary Setters era and in two seasons from 1975 we played some great stuff- although bar the County Cup we won nowt. After that he seemed to lose his way and brought in a lot of young players- and a few older 'uns- who were nowhere near good enough. I was quite glad though that he jumped- he went to Bolton, initially as No.2 to Ian Greaves- before he was pushed.

Incidentally Steve Wignall had a lot of time for Setters but couldn't stand Anderson. In fact, Anderson gave Wignall the title of his book- with his rather ham-fisted way of letting Wignall know that he wouldn't be playing later that day.

His book should be an interesting read, although I wonder how much will involve his time at Donny.

My first days in attending as a nipper when Stan was in charge.

I never knew he lived in Cantley, where so?

Me neither! With him being a native North-Easterner, I'd have thought he'd be back up there somewhere.

We never won anything under him, but the football we played under him was the nearest thing to the Penney/O'Driscoll era that I've seen!  He brought in some great players;

Joe Laidlaw
Bobby Owen
Chris Balderstone
Ian Miller
Denis Peacock
Tony Woodcock on loan
Ray Ternent
Ian Bailey

He also brought 3 in from boro in one foul swoop, Peter Creamer, Brian Taylor, but I can't remember the other! All decent players though!

And don't forget he did get us to the Famous Tottenham away game! I was bang behind the goal and saw Pat Jennings put off the best save I've ever seen live. At 2-1 to the lads, across was whipped in, and I stand to be corrected, but I'm sure it was Chris Balderstone who met it with the full meat of his forehead and was flying straight underneath the bar, we had all got our hands up when Jennings leapt like Billy the fcuking Fish and palmed it over the bar.  Les Chappell and Denis had a chuckle brothers moment shortly after that, and the rest as they say is history!!!!

Some good players amongst your list there Savvy. The likes of Ian Bailey, Ian Miller & obviously Woodcock were all players with skill & flair. Same old story I suppose, given the money, maybe he could have taken us further than he did. Think Mickey French was another signing of his.

Christ Almighty! There's some right shite in that list an' all. Bobby Owen? Best known (and he really was) for his ability to miss from 5 yards. Mickey French? Best known for doing absolutely nothing at all. Ever. Peter Creamer? Aaagh! Brian Taylor? depsiote a neat trick from corners at the near post I despair! The bloke was supposed to be a centre half. He must have been a bloody good liar. He was f**king dreadful.

So, yes. Stan did bring in some good players. But he brought in some right crap as well. There actually was a reason why we had to score 4 to get a draw you know.

Off with you, Mr Savvy, to Billy's Midnight Educational Emporium!

BobG

Ps And off with me to Mrs Twinkies School for pathetic Typists. (And that just came out as 'typits' too).

As someone who has been on the sauce tonight, may I just add my coment. We may not have won anything under Stan but we did win back our self respect. The few years I recall as a kid before his appointment were quite abysmal what with the applications for re-election to Div 4 etc.

I will always remember being at school (in Norwich) when Rovers had a half page in the SHOOT magazine under the title “The phoenix has risen” maybe 76?. Stan may have won nothing, and signed some dodgy players but for an ex-pat kid of 13 he managed to keep me hooked on the Rovers and I’m still here today. For me, for a couple years he put a bloody smile on my face, even when we lost in style – remember our games with Reading.
In my mind, Stan certainly deserves a plinth in the pantheon of the Belle Vue gods.

Absolutley. My first Rovers game was in 1967 but I did't go on my own until 1976 when Stan was in charge.

We were great going forward but shocking in defence. I still think Denis Peacock was one of THE best goalkeepers around as he used to get plenty of practice.

My defensive hero was Brain Taylor but when you compare to now, he was like Shelton Martis on a bad day.

Then we signed Dave Bradley from Man U. Had a great knack of diverting the ball in to his own net. One of these players who seemed to have it all but was on a completely different wavelength to the rest.

Ask anyone though about that era though, and Kitchen O'Callaghan and Miller were players that got you excited.

Was walking past Waterstones in the Frenchgate the other day and there was a big poster saying Stan Anderson would be there on Saturday 13th November 11am, signing copies of the book.
